On this day in 1947 Jackie Robinson was promoted to play first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers effectively crossing MLB's color line. His stand up character and physical ability led him to a HOF career and a special place in US sports history. Salute!
Go, Jackie Go!

Born in Cairo Ga. I always think of him as a west coast guy.

It's was the Second Great Migration. Black Southerners escaped the South and Jim Crowe and migrated to California. There was a huge boom around WWII and the following 10 years or so.

I read a story, about Robinson as he was coming up to bat against the Yankees, with Yogi Berra behind the plate. When Jackie came up to the plate, Yogi shook his hand, said welcome to the bigs. A classy move by Yogi, when most of the MLB players were either ignoring him, or dumping a load of crap on the kid. Two MLB legends.

Lester, I actually saw it on a Netflix documentary about Yogi. I couldn't remember where I had read it, until I happened to be thumbing through Netflixes programs.
