Oh the ND campus is very nice but the rest of the area is a dying rust belt town that has seen much better days

No, it is not a dump. Parking is hard to find and so is a room if you plan on staying there. The campus is very nice and stadium is a typical older stadium. My only complaint is when I went there the last time, enjoyed the pep rally the night before and had great tickets in what seemed to be the donors section. I was about five rows back from the sidelines, Bon Jovi was there with his sons...but the fans do not get into the game. They watched the game like it was a movie. The game went into four OT's and was won on a field goal...after the game...the fans near me...stood up and walked out. Movie was over...but it is a great atmosphere for football due to the tradition. I can honestly say though, the Irish fans coming this weekend to Clemson are in for a treat...no one..and I mean no one...has a tailgate, pregame and game atmosphere like Clemson. Just hope the fans save their voices for third downs...be loud and proud.

Ind. for a while. You havent missed anything. Backward no class state. Kind of like if Columbia SC was a state instead of a town

Most of my family is from that area. Michigan City, South Bend, Gary. They're all in fairly rough shape, as is most of that area...the steel mills closed, and the Rust Belt never really recovered. The South had good weather, cheap real estate, and we got a lot of industry to replace the textile industry after it largely shuttered around the same time...not the Rust Belt.
Stuff is cyclical, but that area hasn't been doing well for probably 30 years now.
South Bend is being largely propped up by the University, which still has a ton of money. Michigan City and especially Gary are not good places to visit, much less live.

Don't forget about the lack of a strong Union presence throughout the South. Union presence is four times in Indiana of what it is in South Carolina. Also, lower taxation of businesses.
