I worked for Mike Wood ACC official growing up

Feb 11, 2008, 10:24 PM

he owns American Storage company in Spartanburg and his wife Amy Wood works for a news station. I can tell you for a fact that the whole wood family are Duke basketball fans. So for those of you saying you do not know any refs so you could not tell if they were bias or not......well I do know a lot of refs personally in the acc and I can tell you without a doubt there is a carolina/duke bias.

However.....there is a football ref in the ACC who is a Tiger football fan that called some of our games this year. You would be surprised how many refs actually live in the upstate of South Carolina

Let me guess, that ref

resides in Greenwood?

Just because he is a Clemson fan (kid attends Clemson) doesn't mean he has a bias during games.

His games are the closest to evenly called games I've seen.

If there is an ACC official who's kid attends Clemson he shouldn't be officiating in the ACC at all.

Officals should be independent in fact and apperance. That is not an unreasonable ethical standard.

Well, if an ACC official should be independent

Feb 11, 2008, 10:44 PM

in fact and appearance, wouldn't that disqualify many of the ACC refs?

I know I've got orange colored glasses, but the way these games are called against CU is just atrocious.

Not sure. But if they have ties to acc schools let them go officiate in the PAC 10.

He is also a Duke Grad. But you won't find a better official

Zelton Steed...another ref that sucks

Feb 11, 2008, 10:34 PM

REDUNDANT I KNOW!!

I coached JV Basketball in Charlotte in the late '80s and early '90s and one of the worst referees we had to endure at that time was Zelton Steed.

This is the guy most recently involved in the "contact" incident that got the VT player suspended for 2 games.

Oh yeah, this fool also referees the NCAA Tournament on a regular basis now...including the Final Four last year! He too is a Smurf Lover on the payroll of Swofford & CO.
