Carter has not yet been drafted and we are going into round 4....But,I have to say I am not surprised. I have been watching Clemson linebackers all the way back to Randy Scott and Bubba Brown...Tripplett,McDaniel,Simmons,Termite,Bouleware..etc. Personally, I don't think he is in the Top Thirty I have seen...and I am not even counting outside linebackers....

Freshmen Barrett Carter was not bad . You could see Brent Venables defense in his play.
I saw a lot more life after football and family themes in his character take over and his output directly related to it . no real standard holding his progression accountable . just saying politically correct interview things and being happy with progress (that wasn't really happening)

Outside of the bowl game versus Kentucky where he was outstanding…he seemed to regress every season and every game. Maybe it was the partnership with Trotter that made the magic!

It was the partnership with Porkchop that caused the regression. The proof is in the pudding.

We all love Barrett Carter, and justifiably so.
However, to blame slow development of LBs in Wes Godwin … using Barrett Carter as proof … requires us to give credit to Wes Goodwin for the impressive upward trajectory of Wade Woodaz.
FWIW, J.Trotter played his final two seasons under Goodwin; he played NLP his FR season under Venables. Trotter was nothing special I’ll his FR year. Definitely not Sammy Brown-esque.
Let’s be happy that Tom Allen is our guy, and wish Goodwin all the best being part of the Oklahoma FB program.

Neither Carter nor Woodaz played exceptionally well under Goodwin in 2024

It was not a fluke that Sammy Brown had 75 tackles (45 solos) in 1/2 the snaps (375) of Carter (763 snaps / 88 tackles / 42 solos) and Woodaz (632 snaps / 88 tackles / 42 solos). S RJ Mickens had the most solo tackles (48) on the team heading into playoffs.

I would agree that his showing did not surpass those mentioned

I have wonder if it was talent or coaching?
I been around as long as you having seen Randy Scott, Bubba Brown and beyond.
I think this Defense especially LB was the worst coached in many years.
Think whoever drafts him will get a steal with some coaching

Absolutely, if he knuckles down and not only accept the training, but puts in the effort.

Being around Wes did none of the LB's any favors. The longer he was there the worse the D got and the less the LB's seemed to do.

Not true.
Wade Woodaz has developed from a surprisingly good, but hardly great, LB as a FR to an obvious stud now. Woodaz never played under Venables.
J.Trotter played his FR season under Venables; he was hardly a distinguished LB as a FR. As a SO and, even moreso as a JR, he played under Goodwin; he was excellent as a SO and a flat out stud as a JR.
Just sayin’.

Can't blame all on Goodwin, but he deserves some blame. Some players peak, some motivation wanes. Love Carter but he missed way to many tackles. I think different coach could have brought him back to level and allowed progression. My 2 cents...

I think a lot of the blame could be placed squarely on poor position coaching & poor development for Carter not being the player we all thought he was going to be after his freshman year.

Maybe some coaching but he seemed to be a little slow in space. Great guy and wish him well.

I was pumped when we signed him and after watching him his freshman year. #1 LB in the nation, #18 player, potential future first round pick (247).
Always seemed like a good guy and great teammate, but I never thought of him as a leader of our defense at the linebacker position… like we saw from Boulware or Skalski. Carter was just sort of “there”.
He wasn’t a great tackler, didn’t blow up plays, and seemed to get bulldozed by linemen at times. Didn’t seem like he had that mean streak that you’d like.
I hope he ends up having a great career in the NFL, wherever he ends up, but I understand why he isn’t high on people’s boards.
