Holding calls

2

Jan 11, 2025, 9:58 AM

Is it just me or have I seen a ton more complaints about missed holding calls this year in football from fans? Fans of all teams.

Why would you want games littered with holding calls? It seems like “they missed holding” is just a go to excuse for fans now.

I certainly would not want to watch games where every other big play was coming back because of holding

If you are going to call holding on the defensive backs for grabbing receivers by the jersey you should call it on the offensive linemen doing the same thing. Ohio State got away with big time hold on their last drive but yet Texas was called for defensive holding on that same drive. Coaches and players will continue to push the rule book if officials are not going to call it. Heck, we see more hands to the face mask called at the line of scrimmage than holding. I’m thinking the powers to be are trying to protect the quarterbacks. Would love to see Coach Saban explain what is and isn’t holding on olinemen.

I say replace the existing numb nuts with 8 AI Bots. The rule book could be downloaded into their memory. They could be placed at strategic places overlooking the field. The head AI Bot would receive data from these points and immediately determine if a foul has been committed, if so a horn would be sounded and the results displayed on the Jumbotron. Problem solved.

To me, complaining about holding calls is what fans of teams that lost do. Realistically, Holding probably could be called on every few plays. Against both teams. Some are egregious. But the refs gotta let some slide. FYI, the Buckeyes opponents haven’t had a holding call on the offensive line since like Sept 20th. That is crazy

Re: Holding calls

I have seen that holding penalties are more often called on plays that break for a big gain. They don’t seem to care about holding on plays unless they have an impact on the game. Take from that what you will…
And congratulations on the win last night.

The holding no-call on OSU’s right tackle on third down early during their go ahead TD drive was terrible. And that play had a huge impact on the game. Not converting would have almost certainly resulted in a punt and the game is potentially much different if they don’t score on that drive. We’ve seen these ACC refs make extremely inconsistent calls all year long. All anyone wants is consistency from officials.

Thanks. That game was insane. From Texas having 1st and goal at the 1 with a chance to tie. Then Sawyer going right by that OT like he was standing still to get the sack/strip/TD. Crazy. I was watching with some friends that are UT fans (I live in San Antonio) so I was trying not to go crazy. But, it won’t mean a thing if the Buckeyes don’t beat ND. As my idol, Ricky Bobby said, “If you ain’t first, you’re last.”

on their individual opinions and interpretations of the situation?

Why not ignore certain offsides violations when playeers clearly jump or cross the line well before the ball is snapped? Why not ignore certain obvious facemask violations depending on the situation? Clips, illegal blocks, hits after the whistle, too many players on the field, etc.? Why slow down the game with a bunch of rules?

If it's a rule, it should be enforced consistently, by the book, not arbitrarily at the whim of individual officials. If it is determined by those in authority that holding and pass interference are poorly written rules that no longer apply or fit with today's game, then somebody should have the bawls to say so and rewrite the rules to fit today's game, or eliminate them altogether. Don't be a poosay and decide behind closed doors that certain rules are going to be ignored or reinterpreted, then enforce them randomly and situationally based on individual opinion.

Your concern is unfounded anyway. If refs decided to enforce the rule as written, by the book, and throw a flag every single time, holding (and PI) would be reduced in a hurry. Players would start to be coached and taught how NOT to hold and interfere, and it would be reduced dramatically in short order. There would be an adjustment period however, because we have a whole generation that has been taught and coached to hold and interfere.

It's well past time to quit pretending and lying, and grow some bawls. Either change or eliminate the rule.

The one where the RT was holding the Texas end which looked like he may make it for the sack was a momentum changer in my opinion, or it seemed so on that particular drive.

Unbelievable a ref can be right on top of the play and won’t call something that was easy for me to see without having to see the replay.

The announcers did notice as well and did go back and show the replay. It was even worse than it looked like the first time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Holding calls

Generally, holding within the frame of the body is allowed. When the player extends out and holds, or hooks the defender with their arms, it is much more likely to be called, but it’s highly inconsistent from crew to crew. The one I hate is where the offensive lineman is allowed to tackle the defensive lineman and then lay on top of them. It’s obvious holding, and rarely called.

Basketball is nothing like it used to be. I remember getting taught to dribble more with my fingers, and if my palm went under the ball, palming was called. I’m not even sure what the rules are these days. Think they definitely favor the offense for ratings but I believe it is having the reverse effect.

Could today’s players even play by the original rules?

When I first started playing, a guy I knew game me a pair of gloves with the fingers cut off and a small piece of hard rubber glued onto the palm of the gloves to wear during practice. Made you handle the ball with your fingertips. One of the best things anyone ever did for me as far as basketball was concerned.

Suggestion. Drop the rules for holding as well as PI. Since these are never consistently enforced just let the players battle it out to gain advantage any way they can unless it is a safety issue as in grabbing the head gear. Leave it to the players efforts instead of refs choice. I think much is ignored to speed up the games. True also for rarely measuring for a first down. Less clock stoppage means more advertising time to sell. Just an opinion but I think I would enjoy watching games that are not affected by so many inconsistent "judgement" calls.

ignored/enforced. While we're at it, why not ignore offsides, too many men on the field, passing beyond the line of scrimmage, etc .... then it would really be free-flowing and fun to watch, not clogged up with a bunch of rules and structure.

I don’t know how it’s missed so often. If it directly contributed to the result of the play, and the defender was twisted around and held back form making the play, it’s obvious

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Holding calls

2

Jan 11, 2025, 11:31 AM

I am a big fan of good defensive football. The sack is one of the most exciting plays in the game. When offensive linemen are allowed to wrap their arm under the neck of and basically tackle a defender that has him beat like the OSU right tackle did last night, it unfairly prevents a huge, potentially game changing play by the defense. It should be called and called consistently.
If you think it will bring back every other big play then you should ask yourself, would it have been a big play without the holding? Maybe It could have just as easily been a big play for the defense if the proper call had been made.

The blatant missed PI calls where a player's jersey is tugged and a foot of it is in the hand of the DB is the real problem.

You can call holding on every play but they usually have a standard for PI and there were many times it was uncalled in the playoffs.
