31 - Wing Back June Pruitts 1945 Team Ranked 31st in Scoring Average

In Monday’s Hill Watch thread, Pig mentioned his uncle, June Pruitt, who was a halfback in the 1940s. As Pig also mentioned, it is not easy to find a lot of information about a player from the 1940s. (So True!!)

After doing some digging on June Pruitt, it became clear fairly quickly that Pruitt left his mark on Clemson in a BIG way! Nicknamed June “The General” Pruitt, he was not only a star football player in the 40s, but he was also a key player for the Clemson basketball and Clemson baseball teams. An all-around great student athlete at Clemson!

Thank you, Pig®, for mentioning your uncle. What an amazing athlete!! Cheers to you and to your uncle, June Pruitt!!! Here is what I could find on this outstanding Clemson legend!

Before Clemson:

June Pruitt was apparently quite the athlete at Greer High School in the late 1930s. He was inducted into the Greer High School Ring of Honor in 2006. YellowJacketSports.com says the following about his high school career:

“June Pruitt, Class of 1939

General Joshua "June" Pruitt, Jr. played football, basketball, & baseball for the Greer Yellow Jackets, and though there are not many records that remain, June Pruitt's legendary career at Greer remain strong. His first Yellow Jacket teams played football at Victor Park before the "new" Greer High Stadium was opened downtown in 1938. On that night it was June Pruitt who scored the first touchdown in the new stadium in a game against Seneca in front of over 2000 fans.

After serving in the Army in World War II, June was recruited to Clemson by Coach Frank Howard. He played wing back for the Tigers, and also played on the basketball team coached by Banks McFadden. He led the state in scoring while there earning the SC Coaches All Star team for three straight years. He played baseball as well for the Tigers, lettering in all three sports. One interesting fact is that June was a member of the "Tiger Mibs" the Clemson marbles team that was coached by Frank Howard. He was known for his "bust" shot, which according to sports writers, had "no equal in the nation"! The players "had all been skilled in the "Howard Shot", which consisted of placing tobacco juice on all the marbles to get full benefit of any deflections caused by bank shots." (from The Tiger paper, Apr. 1947)

June was a family man, a tireless worker, and a member of Victor Baptist Church. He became an excellent golfer, and was elected to serve on the Greer City Council in 1969. After a lengthy illness, he passed away in 1972. June Pruitt was and is a true Greer Yellow Jacket legend!”

http://www.yellowjacketsports.net/GreerHighRingofHonor.html

Pruitt spent time serving his country in the military during WW 2 before coming to Clemson. Thank you for your service, Mr. Pruitt!!

Football:

1945:

Basketball:

From The Tiger: February 20, 1946. June Pruit is mentioned 10 times on this one page of the Tiger from 1946. This page also includes his picture as a basketball player:

Baseball:

ClemsonTigers.com lists 1B June Pruitt as a starter for the 1946 Clemson Baseball Team. Interesting that the team went 12-5 for the season:

https://clemsontigers.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/StartingLineups.pdf

From the Tiger May 3, 1946. Note that 1B June Pruitt is mentioned twice: once for having no errors, and again in the box score for the game against Furman:

- In Runs Scored with 20
- In Walks with 27

Thank you so much for all this history on Uncle June. I really am appreciative to you for finding this. He died when I was 10 years old, so I don't really remember much about him other than my dad's stories about him.
I will print all of this off and show it to my 95 year old dad, who will absolutely love it. I will also put a copy in the Pruitt family Bible for safe keeping.
Again, thank you so very very much.

It was my pleasure, Pig. It was fun for me to learn about such a great Clemson student athlete.

Your uncle was clearly an amazing athlete. I cannot imagine being a star athlete in all three major sports (football, basketball, baseball) at Clemson. I know your family is very proud!

If interested: If you check those links, many of them are already in pdf form so it would be easy to keep a digital copy as well. I assume the content from the other websites could be converted to pdf if you want to keep a digital copy of them also.

31 - Clemson Football has had 31 Consensus All-Americans

19

Jul 31, 2024, 12:31 AM
Reply

Clemson has had well over a hundred football players receive some type of All-American honors. Wikipedia describes the following Clemson football player recognitions:

Clemson’s “alumni includes over 100 All-Americans, 17 Academic All-Americans and over 250 players in the National Football League.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clemson_Tigers_football

There are many organizations that compose an All-American list each year. Being an All-American, therefore, is different from being a consensus All-American. A Consensus All-Americans focuses on five specific selecting organizations:

- Associated Press
- American Football Coaches Association
- Football Writers Association of America
- Sporting News
- Walter Camp Foundation

According to Wikipedia:

“Starting in 2009, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) recognizes the all-American teams selected by the AP, AFCA, FWAA, Sporting News, and the WCFF to determine consensus All-Americans. If more than half the organizations select a player to their first team, he receives the “consensus” honor. If no player qualifies under that criterion, a player named to two first teams can be chosen.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clemson_Tigers_football

Being a Consensus All-American, therefore, usually means that a player is recognized as a first-team All-American by at least three of these five selecting organizations in the same season. A difficult distinction to achieve for sure! Being a Unanimous All-American means being recognized as a first-team All-American by each of these five selecting organizations in the same season.

Sports-Reference.com identifies 29 different players for Clemson who have achieved Consensus All-American honors. Two of those players (Terry Kinard and Vic Beasley) have achieved this honor twice – thus a total of 31 Consensus All-Americans for Clemson.

Of note: Only Travis Etienne achieved Consensus A-A honors in 2020. Trevor Lawrence is not listed as a consensus A-A on their 2020 list despite finishing 2nd in the Heisman voting. TL16 is also not listed as a consensus A-A in 2018 or in 2019 as well.

Here are the 31 Clemson Consensus All-Americans (29 different players) according to Sports-Reference.com:

1. Vic Beasley DL 2013

2. Vic Beasley DL 2014

3. Terry Kinard DB 1981

4. Terry Kinard DB 1982

5. Gaines Adams DL 2006

6. Keith Adams LB 2000

7. Dwayne Allen TE 2011

8. Da'Quan Bowers DL 2010

9. Bennie Cunningham TE 1974

10. Jeff Davis LB 1981

11. Travis Etienne AP 2020

28. David Treadwell K 1987

29. Deshaun Watson QB 2015

30. Christian Wilkins DL 2018

31. Donnell Woolford DB 1988

Of note:
Winsipedia lists Clemson’s 31 Consensus All-Americans as being tied with Auburn for 26th most in the country.

CONSENSUS ALL AMERICANS:
26. Auburn (31)
26. Clemson (31)

By comparison, the Gamechickens have had 4 Consensus A-A which is tied with 72nd place with five other comparable programs:

CONSENSUS ALL AMERICANS:
72. Louisiana (4)
72. Memphis (4)
72. Rutgers (4)

South Carolina Highway 31 (I couldn't get a good map pic), known as Carolina Bays Parkway, is a 28.1-mile-long state highway in Horry County that runs from the south end at SC 707 near Socastee to the north end at SC 9 in Little River, the town, not the band or river at the NC/SC border or the two that SC 34 crosses. SC 31 parallels US 17 and the coast along northeastern South Carolina.

31 is a special number to me for being one of my son BigAl's jersey numbers in little league baseball years ago. My birthday is also on the 31st (not this month). 7 of the 12 months have 31 days and Hill Watch Day 31 is on July 31 with the first game on August 31. Clemson has won the last 6 games played on the 31st of a month (August, October, or December) including the semifinal vs Ohio State on 12/31/2016 by a score of 31-0 and two straight games with the 25-24 win over LSU in the Chik-fil-A Bowl on 12/31/2012 and the 38-35 win over UGA on 8/31/2013. The last loss on the 31st was the Meineke Bowl loss to USF on 12/31/2010 by a score of 31-26. On a side note, the shortest term of a U.S. president was 31 days when William Henry Harrison served from March 4 to April 4 of 1841 when he died of pneumonia.

Ryan Carter’s pick 6 vs South Carolina 11/25/2017
