71 Seasons Ago Clemson Football Finished 5-5 in 1954

The season might not have been perfect. But the season is still VERY noteworthy:
- The Tiger makes his first appearance at a game!!
- Clemson begins firing a cannon after each score!!

Overview:

According to Wikipedia:

“The 1954 Clemson Tigers football team was an American football team that represented Clemson College in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) during the 1954 college football season. In its 15th season under head coach Frank Howard, the team compiled a 5–5 record (1–2 against conference opponents), finished fifth in the ACC, and outscored opponents by a total of 193 to 121.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1954_Clemson_Tigers_football_team

Clemson Head Coach Frank Howard:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Howard_(American_football)

Worthy of Note:

According to ClemsonWiki:

“The Tiger mascot appears on the Clemson sidelines for the first time. He joins the Country Gentleman, a Clemson representative since 1939.”

https://clemsonwiki.com/wiki/1954

The Tiger:

And according to ClemsonTigers.com:

“Sept. 18, 1954 – Clemson Head Cheerleader George Bennett fired a cannon after each Tiger score. The cannon was purchased by Bennett’s father and the tradition is still carried out today.

Oct. 9, 1954 – Clemson upset 14th ranked Florida in Jacksonville, 14-7.”

https://clemsontigers.com/clemson-football-historical-timeline/

And Wikipedia adds the following:

“Buck George, Scott Jackson, Mark Kane, and Clyde White were the team captains. The team's statistical leaders included quarterback Don King with 468 passing yards, halfback Joel Wells with 352 rushing yards, and halfback Jim Coleman with 31 points (5 touchdowns, 1 extra point).

Three Clemson players were also named to the 1954 All-South Carolina football team: back Don King, end Scott Jackson, and tackle Clyde White.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1954_Clemson_Tigers_football_team

As for Clemson QB Don King:

According to ClemsonTigers.com:

King led the Tigers in passing for four straight years and in rushing in 1953. He was the first Clemson player to lead the Tigers in passing four consecutive years. It is an accomplishment that has been equaled only by Nealon Greene (1994-97) and Charlie Whitehurst (2002-05) since.

https://clemsontigers.com/former-tiger-don-king-passes-away/

Here is a different image of Clemson Football Legend Don King from the previous images:

Image from: https://www.ebay.com/itm/354813140015

Results:

September 18: Presbyterian* W 33–0
September 25: at Georgia* L 7–14
October 2: VPI* L 7–18
October 9: vs. No. 14 Florida* (Jacksonville) W 14–7
October 21: at South Carolina L 8–13
October 30: vs. Wake Forest W 32–20
November 6: Furman* W 27–6
November 13: at No. 17 Maryland L 0–16
November 20: at No. 18 Auburn* L 6–27
November 27: The Citadel* W 59–0

I do like seeing that nice win against Florida in Jacksonville!

With the loss in Columbia, Clemson’s record in the series with the Gamechickens falls to 29-20-3. Having won a mere 20 of the 52 games played between Clemson and South Carolina, this was as close to Clemson as the Chickens would EVER become.

Also in 1954:

According to ClemsonWiki:

“Lake Issaqueena is drained for ecological renewal and numerous sand-filled M38A2 100-pound Practice Bombs are seen in the lake bottom, left from the use of the World War II Issaqueena Bombing Range. The exposed bombs are disposed of in 1955. The lake is not completely drained and therefore the possibility of additional practice bombs in deeper portions of the lake exists.”

Todays player spotlight is #71 Tristan Leigh. He is a graduate senior offensive linemen for the 2025 Clemson Tigers.

Tristan is a “Former five-star recruit who assumed a starting role in 2023 … enters 2025 having played 1,587 offensive snaps over 32 career games (23 starts).”

Out of high school, Tristan was “One of the highest rated offensive linemen in the nation … ranked in the top 25 among all prospects by Rivals.com, ESPN.com and 247Sports … listed as the No. 15 overall player and a five-star prospect by 247Sports, which also ranked him as the fourth-best offensive tackle in the nation and second-best player from Virginia … Rivals.com listed him as the 17th-best overall player, the fourth-best offensive tackle and top player from Virginia … ESPN.com ranked him No. 22 overall as well as the fourth-best offensive tackle and the second-best player from Virginia … PrepStar five-star recruit and Top 150 Dream Team selection who ranked as the nation’s No. 34 overall recruit, including ranking as the No. 2 offensive tackle prospect and No. 2 player in Virginia”. He was apparently a 2 way player in high school. He was a OL and DT but chose to focus on being a left tackle once he left for college. He also played basketball in high school as well.

“His father, Stan Leigh, played running back at Virginia from 1990-94 … his mother, Laura Rigney, graduated from Virginia and George Mason/George Washington School of Medicine and serves as a family nurse practitioner“.

PT Countdown, day 71: Lutetium!

Thanks O.J.
Periodic Table Countdown! Join us as we count our way down to Hydrogen and the kick off of Clemson Football 2025!

Element 71 is Lutetium, which symbol Lu.

I'm at a loss.

A PhD dissertation investigated increasing radioluminescence by adding lutetium into gadolinium silicate nanoparticles and found they showed enhanced light output under X-ray stimulation.

Pfftt, who doesnt know about Lutetium?

I’m bored so…

Lutetium (Lu) is a rare earth element with a variety of specialized applications, particularly in the medical and industrial sectors.
Here are some of the main uses of lutetium:

Medical Applications:

Targeted Cancer Therapy: The radioactive isotope Lutetium-177 (Lu-177) is crucial in nuclear medicine for targeted radionuclide therapy (TRT). It's used to treat certain cancers like prostate cancer and neuroendocrine tumors by attaching to specific molecules or antibodies that target cancer cells. This allows for the precise delivery of radiation to the tumor, minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

Medical Imaging: Lutetium-based compounds, like lutetium oxyorthosilicate (LSO) and lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO) crystals, are vital components in Positron Emission Tomography

(PET) scanners. Their high density and effective atomic number contribute to enhanced image resolution and diagnostic accuracy.

Bone Pain Palliation: Lu-177-EDTMP has been shown to be effective in relieving bone pain in patients with metastatic prostate and breast carcinomas.

Industrial Applications:

Catalysis: Lutetium finds application in petroleum refining as a catalyst for cracking hydrocarbons. This process helps to break down heavy crude oil into more valuable, lighter components.

Specialized Materials: Lutetium is used in the production of advanced ceramics and metal alloys to improve their properties like strength and corrosion resistance. Lutetium-stabilized zirconia, for instance, is utilized in high-temperature applications like thermal barrier coatings.

Phosphors: Lutetium oxide is used in the production of phosphors for fluorescent lighting and in scintillation crystals for radiation detection. Lutetium-based phosphors are also employed in advanced LED technologies.

High-Refractive-Index Glass: Lutetium is used in the production of high-refractive-index glass, which is important for specialized optical lenses and laser systems.

Dating Meteorites: The radioactive isotope Lutetium-176 (Lu-176) is used in dating meteorites to determine their age relative to Earth.

In essence, lutetium plays a significant role in various high-tech and specialized fields, particularly in the medical and industrial sectors, contributing to advancements in cancer treatment, medical imaging, and advanced materials development.

I thought everyone knew that? 😂
