TLDR Version:
1. Head Coach Frank Howard’s final season at Clemson!

2. America sent human beings to the moon – And then brought them home safely to Earth!
- “One small step for man. One giant leap for mankind.”

Season Overview:

According to Wikipedia:

“The 1969 Clemson Tigers football team was an American football team that represented Clemson University in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) during the 1969 NCAA University Division football season. In its 30th and final season under head coach Frank Howard, the team compiled a 4–6 record (3–3 against conference opponents), tied for third place in the ACC, and was outscored by a total of 250 to 178.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1969_Clemson_Tigers_football_team

Worthy of Note:

Wikipedia offers the following information on Clemson’s 1969 season:

“Frank Howard retired as head coach after the 1969 season, although he remained athletic director until 1971. In 1974, the playing field at Memorial Stadium, which he helped to build, was named in his honor.

Defensive end Ivan Southerland and running back Charlie Tolley were the team captains. The team's statistical leaders included quarterback Tommy Kendrick with 1,457 passing yards, running back Ray Yauger with 968 rushing yards and 66 points (11 touchdowns), and end Charlie Waters with 738 receiving yards.

Three Clemson players were selected by the Associated Press as first-team players on the 1969 All-Atlantic Coast Conference football team: Ray Yauger; Charlie Waters; and Ivan Southerland.”

After losing in Columbia, Clemson’s lead in the series vs. South Carolina falls to 38-26-3.

Also in 1969:

According to ClemsonWiki:

“May 1969: Craig Mobley becomes the first African-American student athlete to sign an athletic grant-in-aid with Clemson University. The six-foot guard had been named the most valuable player on Chester High School's basketball team, as well as MVP in the Eastern AAA Conference in 1968-1969.”

And: One small step for man – One huge step for mankind!

Apollo 11 was a spaceflight conducted from July 16 to 24, 1969, by the United States and launched by NASA. It marked the first time that humans landed on the Moon. Commander Neil Armstrong and Lunar Module pilot Buzz Aldrin landed the Lunar Module Eagle on July 20, 1969, at 20:17 UTC, and Armstrong became the first person to step onto the Moon's surface six hours and 39 minutes later, on July 21 at 02:56 UTC. Aldrin joined him 19 minutes later, and they spent about two and a quarter hours together exploring the site they had named Tranquility Base upon landing.

As for Clemson Head Coach legend Frank Howard:

According to Wikipedia:

Howard coached the Clemson Tigers for 30 years, amassing the 15th most wins of any college football coach. He led Clemson to ten bowl games, an undefeated season in 1948, and several top-20 rankings during his tenure as head coach. During his stay at Clemson, Howard also oversaw the athletic department, ticket sales, and was an assistant coach for the baseball team. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, the South Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and the Clemson Ring of Honor. The playing surface at Clemson's Memorial Stadium is named after him.

After Coach Howard retired, he maintained an office at Clemson. On his office door was the title "Legend."

Love the schedule on the scoreboard!
Wish the tickets were still $6 per game these days!

As much as I love the tiger Paw helmet, it would be cool to see one throwback game with the old helmets! (I’ll probably get blasted for saying that)

New pfp players spotlight

Todays spotlight will be another double feature since there are 2 players who wear #56.

So our first spotlight will be on #56 Champ Thompson. He is a redshirt freshman defensive tackle for the 2025 Clemson Tigers.

Champ was “Ranked as the No. 288 overall player in the nation by PrepStar … also ranked as 53rd-best defensive lineman in the country and 55th-best player in Georgia by PrepStar … listed as ESPN’s 19th-best defensive lineman in the class and the outlet’s 39th-best player in Georgia … rated 29th at his position and 46th in Georgia by Rivals … helped Gainesville to a 12-1 record in 2023 … credited with 36 tackles, 7.5 sacks and four pass breakups … played for Josh Niblett at Gainesville … played previously at Meadowcreek, where he was a second-team all-county and first-team all-region selection for its playoff team in 2022 … added 38 tackles, seven tackles for loss and three sacks as a junior … caught two passes for 11 yards offensively that year including an eight-yard touchdown reception vs. Berkmar … three-time team captain … also played basketball at Meadowcreek.”.

He “Joined Clemson in its 2024 recruiting class”. In his debut season with Clemson in 2024, Champ was “Credited with three tackles in 41 defensive snaps over three games while redshirting … made two tackles in collegiate debut vs. Appalachian State … credited with one tackle vs. The Citadel.”.

“(Champ’s) father, Michael, was an offensive tackle and a fourth-round pick by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2000 NFL Draft … finished his prep career at the same high school as All-American Deshaun Watson … committed to Clemson Jan. 28, 2023 … enrolled at Clemson in January 2024 … sociology major … completed a microinternship with Def Jam Recordings in spring 2024.”.

Here is his bio: https://clemsontigers.com/sports/football/roster/season/2025/champ-thompson/

Here is his Hudl profile: https://www.hudl.com/profile/17391717/Champ-Thompson

Here is his instagram: https://www.instagram.com/champ.t7/

Here is his twitter: https://x.com/iam_champ7
Our second spotlight goes to #56 Watson Young. He is a redshirt freshman offensive lineman for the 2025 Clemson Tigers.

Watson was “One of five finalists for Mr. Football in South Carolina in 2023 … helped Daniel to a 51-1 record in his four years as the Lions’ starting left tackle … helped Daniel to three state titles in four years and four straight Region 1-AAA championships … SCFCA All-State honoree in 2022 and 2023 … named to the South Carolina Shrine Bowl team in 2023 … named Region 1-AAA Lineman of the Year and Pickens County Courier All-County Player of the Year … earned 2022 Palmetto Combine Upper State Best Junior Offensive Lineman and collected Palmetto Combine Series West Top Offensive Lineman honors for 2023 … named MVP of the 2023 Under Armour/ESPN Camp … 2023 District Strength Champion among heavyweights … All-Atlantic Region selection by PrepStar, which ranked Watson as 15th-best player in South Carolina … listed as ESPN’s 13th-best prospect in South Carolina … ranked No. 24 in South Carolina by 247Sports … played for Jeff Fruster at Daniel … was also a three-year letterman in baseball at Daniel.”. He “Hit .237 with 3 HR and 18 RBI as a sophomore per MaxPreps.”.

He signed with Clemson in 2024 but unfortunately he suffered a knee injury before the 2024 season that sidelined him for the whole season. He should be healthy now though. So here’s hoping he gets some playing time in 2025 and starts developing into a great player.

Watson “Became the first fourth-generation Clemson football player on record … son of former Clemson All-American and three-time Academic All-American Kyle Young … Kyle played for the Tigers from 1998-2001 and was also a two-time All-American on the field as Clemson’s starting center across the 1999-2001 seasons … Kyle, who is in the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame and currently works as an Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director for Clemson Athletics, was the center for legendary Clemson quarterback Woodrow Dantzler … Watson’s uncle, Will Young, was an offensive lineman at Clemson from 1992-95 and was an All-ACC selection in 1995 … his great grandfather, Ed McLendon, lettered in 1939 and played the first bowl team in Clemson history that earned a 6-3 win in the 1940 Cotton Bowl … his grandfather, Ben Watson, was a linebacker at Clemson from 1968-70”.
