Ian is the “Son of a former US national rugby player … enters 2025 having played 11 offensive snaps in one game appearance during his redshirt campaign in 2023.”.

He “Wore No. 72 for coach Drew Sanders as a top offensive lineman at Vandegrift High School in Austin, Texas … collected second-team MaxPreps All-America honors as he helped Vandegrift to a 14-2 record and Texas 6A state championship berth in 2022 … helped the 13-year-old program to its first state championship appearance … scored a touchdown on a 10-yard run on a designed lateral play as a senior, running over three opponents to score against Cedar Park … ranked as the nation’s No. 160 overall player by Rivals … ranked No. 224 overall by 247Sports … Rivals also listed him as the No. 26 player in Texas and nation’s No. 14 offensive tackle … 247Sports listed him as the No. 40 player in Texas and 22nd-best offensive tackle in the nation … PrepStar four-star prospect.”.

Ian had offers from Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State and USuC but ultimately choose Clemson’s offer.

In 2023 he “Made one game appearance while redshirting … played 11 snaps in collegiate debut vs. Charleston Southern.”.
In 2024 he “Suffered a season-ending knee injury during fall camp.”.

Ian “came to Clemson from same area as Austin native and current Tiger quarterback Cade Klubnik … son of two rugby players, including his father, Eric, a former US Men’s National Team member, and his mother, Jeanna, who played four years on a travel rugby squad … credits playing rugby for nine years for developing his agility … Eric’s international career included earning his first cap against Australia in the 1999 Rugby World Cup in Wales … his brother, Charlie signed with Clemson’s men’s soccer program as a goalkeeper and transitioned to football in 2025 … enrolled at Clemson in January 2023 … criminal justice major … completed a microinternship with Stewart–Haas Racing in spring 2024.”.

54 Seasons Ago Clemson Football Finished 5-6 in 1971

Hootie Ingram’s best season at Clemson at 5-6 (that pretty much tells the story right there)!

Season Overview:

According to Wikipedia:

“The 1971 Clemson Tigers football team was an American football team that represented Clemson University in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) during the 1971 NCAA University Division football season. In its second season under head coach Hootie Ingram, the team compiled a 5–6 record (4–2 against conference opponents), finished second in the ACC, and was outscored by a total of 202 to 155.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1971_Clemson_Tigers_football_team

Worthy of Note:

According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“Oct. 9, 1971 – Hootie Ingram gained his only win over a ranked team as Clemson coach when the Tigers defeat Duke 3-0 in a defensive struggle at the Oyster Bowl in Norfolk, Va. Duke was ranked 14th in the nation entering the contest.

Nov. 27, 1971 – Eddie Seigler became the first Clemson kicker in history to boot a field goal of at least 50 yards. His 52-yarder was important in the 17-7 Clemson win over South Carolina.”

https://clemsontigers.com/clemson-football-historical-timeline/

Similarly, ClemsonWiki adds the following:

“October 9: Clemson ekes out a 3-0 win over Duke in the Oyster Bowl, played in Norfolk, Virginia.

October 16: The Tigers defeat Virginia, 32-15, in the Tobacco Bowl, played in Richmond, Virginia.

October 30: The Tigers beat Wake Forest in Death Valley, 10-9, for Homecoming. Central Dance Association presents Rare Earth in Littlejohn Coliseum at 8 p.m. Tickets are $3 in advance, $4 on the floor, and $4 at the door. (Display advert, The Tiger, Friday, 29 October 1971, Volume LXV, Number 12, page 12.)

November 6: Clemson defeated by North Carolina in Chapel Hill, 13-26.

November 13: The Tigers defeat the Terrapins of Maryland in Memorial Stadium, 20-14.

Fall: Football Coach Hootie Ingram's best season, 5-6, 4-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference for second place.”

https://clemsonwiki.com/wiki/1971

According to Wikipedia:

“Larry Hefner and end John McMakin were the team captains. The team's statistical leaders included quarterback Tommy Kendrick with 1,040 passing yards, running back Rick Gilstrap with 514 rushing yards, Don Kelley with 505 receiving yards, and John McMakin with 30 points scored (5 touchdowns).

Two Clemson players were selected by the Associated Press as first-team players on the 1971 All-Atlantic Coast Conference football team: offensive end John McMakin, defensive end Wayne Baker, and linebacker Larry Hefner.”

With the win in Columbia, Clemson leads the series against the Gamechickens 39-27-3.

Special thanks to jtiger1® for posting this image of the “Tobacco Bowl” between UVa and Clemson:

As for 2nd Year Head Coach Hootie Ingram:

According to Wikipedia:

“Cecil W. "Hootie" Ingram (September 2, 1933 – May 6, 2024) was an American college football player, coach, and athletics administrator. He played for the University of Alabama from 1952 to 1954 and was selected as an All-SEC defensive back in 1952. He worked as an assistant football coach at several colleges, including the University of Georgia and University of Arkansas before he received a head coaching assignment at Clemson University from 1970 to 1972. He was an administrator with the Southeastern Conference in the 1970s and later served as an athletic director at Florida State University (1981–1989) and Alabama (1989–1995).”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hootie_Ingram

Also in 1971:

According to ClemsonWiki:

June 30: The University of South Carolina tenders its resignation to the Atlantic Coast Conference in a dispute about academic standards.

https://clemsonwiki.com/wiki/1971

It does make sense that South Carolina was not interested in being held to any academic standards.

ClemsonWiki also adds:

“August: Clemson University ROTC becomes elective and open to women. "Rat Season" gasps its last when an attempt by Central Spirit Committee and a small cadre of "sadistic upper classmen" (The Tiger, September 3, 1971) fails to revive the hazing practices. In 1970, Rat Pacts were handed out by a small platoon of dedicated traditionalists (freshman variety), and the final Rat Olympics was staged. It will become the Tiger Paw Olympics in 1971.”

https://clemsonwiki.com/wiki/1971

And in Clemson baseball:

“April 17, 1971 – Dave Van Volkenburg pitched a no-hitter in an 11-0 win over Florida State in a seven-inning game.”

Interesting player on that team was Gilstrap who came in a qb. They started using him some at running back. I remeer going to several practices and he was a good runner but not really good catching the ball coming out of the backfield. Yet he was the holder for placekicks and did fine at that as I recall and back then Eddie Siegler kicking was about our only scoring threat.

Got home from Walter Reed at the end of August but was still on crutches - remember going into a field with an uncle on a dove shoot and shooting while sitting against a fence post but not ready for trips to the hills for football games.
