Here's how to paint tiger paws on the roads

Jul 27, 2010, 1:00 PM

-Go to a flooring shop (there used to be one by the Mexican place on Hwy 93) and buy some large pieces of vinyl flooring. Draw tiger paws on the vinyl flooring pieces as large as you can, then cut out the tiger paw to make a large stencil. This stencil can be rolled up and put into car trunks.

-Get fluorescent orange spray paint from a hardware store. Lots of it.

-Map all of the locations in advance that you want to paint tiger paws. Easily "defended" locations (such as at the tops of hills with good visibility) are best.

-Get as many people as possible together for this. Assign teams: two people needed to hold down and spray paint a tiger paw, one to drive and serve as lookout; you could put two teams plus one driver in one car if you have the resources. Each team should get one tiger paw stencil.

-Late one Thursday night send all of the teams out. Try to stagger the times so that the teams traveling farthest out (e.g., to the USC campus or Chapin) leave earliest, so that all teams arrive at their destination at approximately the same time.

-Work quickly and with purpose. At 0200-0300 there is very little traffic on the road. Stop the car, have the team jump out and paint, then move on to the next target. (Don't take flash pictures because those look like blue police lights flashing and may spook the team if they're not aware that their picture is being taken.)

-Meet back in Clemson and celebrate your success with a coldbeer or three.

(Or so I've heard...)

Don't forget...

Make sure the paint is a "quick dry".
We want to make sure the Tiger Paws look pure with integrity as they are laid, with no tire marks...as far as the cars that get in the paint are concerned...they are not first priority...

No. You have to use a roller on a stick and some thick

orange parking lot marking paint (comes in 5 gal. bucket). You would be there all day trying to spray paint a paw worth anything.

Very, Very Excited. Very, Very Proud.

Agreed. That is the quickest way, and it will be much cheaper and last longer, too.

You can buy the stencils at several places in Clemson but they are pricey. I have made all the ones I have used. Not a real tough job.
