It may lend some credence to the rumors about Williams declaring.....emphasis on "may".

I am sure there's more behind the scenes than we know about. I wouldn't doubt if this is the year we will pick up a couple of portal additions, but how many are the questions?

Hearing the same. As I've said many times on here, CDS knows he needs to adapt, and he has in a few small areas, but he has slow-walked it. This has of course had an effect on our ability to recruit...and of course the product on the field. Good thing is at least he realizes it (and has for a while). No one should hold their breath waiting for him to admit it. Far too many words have been spoken....
As far as the portal....of course, its largely abt the money. Always been that way...even before portal.
That's not going to change. The key is finding the good kids. $$$ isn't the issue, and as CDS has said recently, wont be an issue going fwd. Gotta play the game...its not going back to the way it was (where $$$ was paid under the table). NO use in crying over spilt milk. Better go forward......
Once we align our efforts with the reality of today, there is ZERO reason for Clemson not to get back to where we were. As mentioned ad-nauseum on here....just a few little changes in operating procedure will produce a bounty.....

I actually believe Dabo is going to at least try to bring in some portal players to add some functional depth. The low #'s in this recruiting cycle dictate he has no other choice.
But as you say, it's now a $ game....which means it's impossible to predict how things end in a bidding war. Also worth noting that the revenue sharing kicks in NEXT year....so not sure we're on an even playing field money-wise just yet.

Good points. From what I know, $$$ isn't the issue. Look, I agree with CDS and the "ideal"---but that doesn't work in todays environment. It would've been better for us to adapt a few years ago before getting to this point, but at least we are finally here. And again, CDS gets it, you just wont ever hear him admit it. Doesn't take much to make-up ground. Look at UF's recruiting this year as exhibit 1A.
Gotta improve our quality depth/roster management. There is a reason why we falter as games get deep into the second half...

Funny you should mention Florida. My brother in law is an ex-player...ex NFL...very connected to the program. Say what you want about Napier, but he's turning their program around. Players like him, and he's got the money guys supporting him.
As to Clemson, there is no question we fade in the 2nd half because we lack functional depth at the DE and DL. That's a fact. So "if" I had to guess, Dabo is going to try to bring in some help at those positions if we want to have a chance at another ACC title next year.

Yes Napier is doing very well. Thought he was great at his first HCoaching position. They are in good hands imo at Florida.

Absolutely a fact. Just wish we had made this move a few years ago. Good thing is CDS sees it. Just got to move fwd...
Again, don't need to use portal much, just in little amounts to fill in gaps we can't avoid.
ON the other side, if you aint going to use the portal much, better be ELITE at HS recruiting. We are not ATM

For that one recruit that yesterday said he had heard from 1/3 of FBS teams (43). I oft wonder what constitutes “hearing from” in the mind of a recruit.

I swear I heard Dabo talking to reporters a few weeks ago and said we weren’t really losing any starter expect some draft players. But I thought he was talking about seniors like Briningstool and Carter. There were rumors of Mafah and Williams going to the portal last offseason. So hopefully we hang on to Williams one more season!

There are good players hitting the portal everyday, but finding the guys who want to be in Clemson and perform at the highest level will be the difficult part(just like HS recruiting).
I think we land a few, but yes Clemson will have to open up the $$$$ to compete.

Not every player hitting the portal is looking for a payday---many just want more playing time, others don't like the school, changes in coaching staff, etc.---each case is a little different depending upon the situation.
But unfortunately, a lot of it is because of the $$. And that is where the due diligence comes into play.

I think your comment “Just like recruiting, the portal will be the same strategy” is spot on but I don’t think the issue is opening up the $$$$.
I keep saying it is a numbers game. Our strategy on HS recruiting includes offering probably the lowest number of recruits of any school in the country. I have no idea how many HS players are available each year, but I would guess it is a whole lot more than the number of players available in the portal. When you apply that same logic of only offering the players you really want to a much smaller number of available players in the portal it is logical that you won’t get very many from there. That being said, I think we will probably be a little more aggressive in the portal this year and hopefully will be successful in building depth from that source.
