I tend to be optimistic about hires.
I thought Dan Mullen was a great hire at UF. I wanted uf to hire Scott Frost from UCF so FSU could hire Mullen from MS. St.
I thought Billy Napier was a great hire at Florida. (He might sti8ll be, but not looking like it.)
I thought Lincoln Riley was a home run hire at USC.
I thought Wes Goodwin was a great hire at Clemson.
I could go on and on about my thoughts and how wrong they normally are. But, my bottom line on whoever the new DC will be is simple. "Trust Dabo. He knows a lot more and has a lot more at stake than I do."

I imagine there is a lot of traffic entering and leaving Oconee Airport on Sundays. I'm sure someone will break the news. Anybody seen David Hood today?

Dabo Swinney was a great hire. Very grateful to all of the players who made plays and won some games during his interim year after Tommy Bowden resigned.
Not enough credit is given to the players on that 2008 team who won four out of the last five in the regular season, including a 31 to 14 drubbing of the Gamecocks. They made it possible for Terry Dan to offer the full-time job to Dabo.

Nobody does until 2-3 years after the hire is made regardless of how many claim home run hire status

I've never tried to out Dabo, Dabo. However, contrary to my opinion about seasoned DC's making lateral moves I believe the challenges at fixing Clemson's defense are basic and like some others here it's not a monumental challenge for our new DC to be touted as having done a fantastic job after just one season here.

I do trust Dabo but I also know many have said promoting Wes was a mistake pretty much since day 1 and they've been proven correct so Dabo, just like everyone else, does make mistakes.

You are correct. No one thought Dabo was a great hire. Most...

Many thought hiring Dabo was a mistake. They also wanted to fire Jeff Scott after his first season so fan reaction is a mixed bag at best

Of course it is but that has nothing to do with assuming every decision Dabo makes is the correct one. BV was a great choice by Dabo, Wes was not.

I think you can have the right guy, but so much has to go right between the hire and calling it “successful” that it’s a roll of the dice. Sometimes you have to let a “right” guy go to get another “right” guy just to change things up and spark optimism and momentum.

bretfsu, I have read a bunch of your post here on T-Net and I've always thought that you seemed pretty smart about FB. But now I have to ask what ever made you think that Wes Goodwin was a great DC hire when he has never played organized FB nowhere that I've found, he has never been an on the field anywhere that I have found, so, how on God's green earth could you have thought at any time that Goodwin was a great hire even for a midget FB team. I said the minute that I read about his hire, that was one of Dabo's biggest mistakes as a HC bc Goodwin has absolutely no experience at coaching the player...

Great question.

Here is why.
1. I trusted Dabo. 2. Venables had trained him. 3. Venables wnated him to go to OU with him. 4. He had basically been Venables eyes from the pressbox during the games. 5. He was considered a "brilliant mind" who could analyze and interpret game film on an almost real time basis.
I knew he didn't have experience and hadn't played the game but I thought he had been around the Clemson program long enough to get the confidence of Brent and Dabo. That was good enough for me.

Perhaps he would have had great results with the talent Venables had on the roster plus a complimentary offense. Unfortunately he had neither

I agree Bret. I will know if it was great hire after the results are in. You never know until you see it. Conjecture is fine, but no one knows how things will work out till he has been here had a chance to do something.

Are you going to hire someone to teach your kids that has never taught a kid to do anything, but they have been around kids before?

Dabo knows far more about how to hire the best, most qualified coaches for Clemson than anybody on here, and it's not even close. Even if every hire he's made has not worked out.

Very True. No one knew Dabs would win 2 natties and I believe 6 ACC championships. Coaches coming back home usually can not repeat their first success either. BV may not be the magic the second go around if that happened.

Youre not alone, including Dabo who hired Goodwin and Streeter.

Many “sure fire” hires are like 4 star recruits where you never know. Is Riley the answer at OC or is Klubnik getting better? DJU was a 5 star disaster for CU and FSU. Everyone is taking their best guess, just like in the “real world”. Dabo knows best, and certainly more than I ever will about football…but he also hired Napier, Streeter, Goodwin, and Kevin Steele.
