...going to bring supplies to folks in need in the Asheville area on Saturday. I am guessing I will go to Sam's Club early Saturday morning somewhere in the Upstate of SC and get as much water, nonperishable foods and other items as I can. I have seen the devastation on television and just want to do something.

Good on you. I hear they are having to use donkeys to get supplies across the river. They’re supposedly trying to get temp military bridges for relief. Finding a route will be the hard part. Roads are gone. Good luck and Godspeed

Yes, I am worried about finding a route. However, if I can get close enough to at least leave it with someone who can distribute it I would be okay with that. I am kind of flying by the seat of my pants with this one.

We have many drop off points here in the CLT area including BOA stadium, CLT motor speedway, and the concord airport where supplies are routed to the appropriate logistics unit. The roads are so messed up and there are so few usable storage facilities that one off loads can actually disrupt recovery efforts. I work for an enormous company with one of the largest supply chains in the world and we're strictly prohibited from taking it upon ourselves to travel to our own facilities unless you're a specially trained member of our emergency recovery team.

get to the upstate. I doubt you can make it all the way up to the Asheville area - but I'm sure you can get your donation to someone who can...

We left Florida this morning. Things down here are in decent shape for the most part. I wanted to come back to SC/NC where I owe so much too.

Probably want find an abundant amount of supplies on west side of Columbia all the way to Greenville Spartanburg area. Power is just getting back on or still out from areas west of Chapin, SC on I26.

Went looking for water and diapers here in Spartanburg to give to a neighbor who was taking stuff on a run up to Hendersonville to bring his mom to his house and it’s cleaned out here.
Bless you sir!

I think we have decided to stop in Georgia and grab what we can before we get there. Maybe make several stops and get what we can. We are bringing a lot of clothes with us that we were going to donate to Goodwill but brining it there instead.

I was going to suggest that. Might be out of luck on some stuff if you waited to buy until you got up here.
And check some of the Facebook Groups for the Western NC area. I was reading through one because my in-laws have a cabin north of Asheville. The locals are updating the roads that are passable, open, open that people don't know about, blocked by law enforcement for local/emergency traffic only. Someone was coming from VA to do what you were doing and got turned away at a checkpoint. Someone else was trying to get in to get their family from a shelter and they were turned away because they had out of state plates even though their family was in the shelter. Stuff like that. Some locals were commenting on that last one saying which roads to take to get in so the guy could get to his wife and kid. Just an FYI.

Goodwill charges for the donations up to 67% of your donations.
Other charities do a better job in these situations. Red Cross or Samaritans purse.

Your not driving into NC are you???? Don't become part of the problem you are trying to help... find a drop point that can distribute your supplies... someone posted a link in this thread.
Its an absolute mess up there, worse than anything I have seen in a long time...
Good on you for caring and taking the time to help...

Most of the upstate is still without power and the Sam's and Costcos and even grocery store are still barebones. May want to stock up south of Columbia depending on where you're coming from

I know David Hood posted on Facebook that there are local pilots flying from oconee airport I think and dropping things off by helicopter. That might be a good option. Also I saw that Little Ivy Baptist Church in Mars Hill has turned into a safe house and needs as many supplies as possible because of all the people that they are serving.

If you really want to help donate to Samaritan's Purse and stay out of the way, unless you want to volunteer with Samaritan's Purse.

Samaritans purse is coordinating donations where they are needed most, they are located in the middle of the worse areas, it’s a great option as every dime will go to those who need it most & they have logistics figured out.
Just a suggestion

I-26 is open. I Iive in south Asheville and drove to the Clemson Stanford game with no trouble whatsoever and that was the day after the storm.
A good drop off point would be Biltmore church on Clayton Road. You can look up the address but you would get off at exit 37 which is Long Shoals Road and go to your left under I 26 for about half a mile and then turn right on Clayton Road. You will see Sunshine Chevrolet and then Biltmore church, which is the next building on the right. They actually own about 30 acres and the church its way off the road.
Good luck and everyone in Asheville appreciates what anyone can do! I have lived in Asheville since 1981, 5 years after graduating from Clemson and I have never seen the devastation that Asheville and the surrounding communities have experienced.
God bless you!
