Do "college" football players still need to maintain academic eligibility?

Do they even have to enroll or go to class?

Good question. You have serious doubts now a days.

This would have been a crazy question just a few short years ago. But, now, not so much in my opinion. Surely, we will eventually hear of a portal player who's academic credits didn't transfer to the new school or something along those lines.
Or the kid who didn't qualify for Mr. Big school. But, went to a small school and developed into a NFL caliber player, "who now suddenly has seen the academic light and can now come to Mr. big school"!

They will not in the near future. Academics will be voluntary or offseason only.

When was the last time you heard of a player losing eligibility due to grades?

Or failing to get into a school because they don't meet a school-set minimum requirement? Can you believe we had a Athlete Academic Review Committee when Bowden coached here?
I can't remember the last time either of these issues have come up.
I do recall that, about ten years ago, every season there would be a few players ruled ineligible for a bowl game when the fall semester grades came in...not just Clemson but everywhere. It was a big to-do about the coaches making sure their guys maintained their eligibility. Now, I know Clemson as a program does very well with their players and their academic performance, but Georgia? Come on. FSU? Heck, any number of big programs. No one ever slips through the cracks?
Curious.
Instead of "Student-athlete"...maybe "Institution Affiliated Athlete"?

You'll still occasionally hear about a player having to go the JuCo route...

With the advent of on-line classes, which admittedly help student-athletes balance athletics and academics, it is also rife for impropriety.

I don't think it is required anymore.

Ask UNC.

The academcid requirements as set forth by the NCAA are a sham. I kid has to do virtually nothing to stay academically eligible now.
They have to give the appearance of enrolling in classes, and the appearance of actually meeting minimum standards in a few of those classes. But, in reality, academics are optional now. The college sets the standards. The NCAA approves whatever standard the college sets.
If you doubt me, explain the NCAA ruling on UNC.
