DJ's biggest problem

Dec 29, 2021, 10:39 PM

DJU is a fine young man, his O-Line has been iffy at times and his receivers haven't helped that much, but his biggest problem is not fixable. You can't fix slow. When your QB can't scramble, you take sacks, you lose a few first downs on busted plays, and QB keepers don't turn into big gainers at times.
Our best QBs have all been able to run out of trouble when they had to.

Being quick and elusive is a nice perk to have, but there are Hall of Famers who are slower and not as quick as DJ.

Yeah, but there is a HUGE difference between the college and pro game. In pro Football, you can have a prosthetic leg, but as long as you have a very high Football IQ and an Elite O-line you'll make it into the HOF. Being able to scramble is a very important aspect of today's college football. The only way DJ will be the guy is if we change to more of a pro-style I formation offense. But to do that we need to be able to effectively block up front.

Peyton Manning could very well be the slowest man on earth but he had an IQ, terrific receivers and an elite o-line.

Peyton Manning would trounce DJ in the 40. Tonight. In his bedroom slippers. DJ is a future hall of famer, on the offensive line.

DJ has decent top speed. His problem is most athletes need 1-2 steps and he needs about 6 yards to reach his. He runs like a 350lb tackle.

Re: DJ's biggest problem

Dec 29, 2021, 11:38 PM [ in reply to Re: DJ's biggest problem ]

DJ's play tonight was one with a good football IQ.

He isn't fast or slippery, but yet (except for the 'eat it and take the sack' play in late Q4 to keep burning clock), he wasn't sacked ... despite his lack of speed.

Why was that? OK, that is a rhetorical question ... DJ has acquired some field presence and situational awareness that was absent early in the season. That was due to (1) DJ's hard work and (2) excellent coaching from B.Streeter and T.Elliott.

We don't need to change the offense one bit. Finding some witch doctor to keep the O-Line healthy and to keep the WRs from dropping passes (like early in 2021 season) will be more than enough for the current offense scheme to thrive.

DJ's biggest problem is Kelly Bryant was better than him. Heck, Chase Bruce is better than him.

I like him. I want him to turn it around. But he is out of shape, not mobile, slow and has poor situational game awareness. Perhaps his knee injury is much worse than they let on...that could explain a lot, but the poor game awareness I just don't know how he fixes.

Lord willing he does! I want him to be successful! I hope he can fix his issues! I'm just afraid he can't.

I'm pulling for him, too, but I have watched all year, and I haven't seen much improvement. The offense has had numerous issues, but a QB that could have made 10 more plays in crucial situations could have made a big difference in the season. Again, really amazing that we won 10 games with all the issues on offense. We'll see what happens next year. Excited about Cade and the young running backs, tightens, and receivers. GO TIGERS!!!!!

DJ is missing a few things in addition to quickness. I agree that he’s a great guy, I really hope he improves over the next eight months, but quickness is not the only facet of his game that needs to improve. Only time will tell.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He had all spring, fall camp and this season to improve

Dec 29, 2021, 11:59 PM

I’ve seen flashes of very good, flashes of very bad, but mostly below average. You have to perform up to Clemson standards or you won’t make it to the next level.

Heck, even Trevor couldn’t get past OSU last year and LSU the year before.

I’m pulling for him, but I think Spring will be an eye opener. We need to get Hunter up to speed fast this spring.

........is multiple!

Dec 30, 2021, 12:14 AM

1. the parents divorcing and them being such a close-knit family most likely meant his head wasn't in the game like it should be.
2. my understanding is he is having offseason knee surgery or some type of surgery. He is likely playing injured and we don't know the extent. But, who else you got?
3. He is far too laid back! Way to laid back for a QB on a team with CFP aspirations. As the QB when the OL isn't blocking, "you call it out". When WR's aren't blocking on screens, "you call it out"! TE or WR drops a pass, "you say something at least" to make it known that's not winning football. He gets praised for his Cali-Swag - but to me that's why a bunch of the Cali QB's don't make it. Football doesn't mean enough to them. They don't have that desperation to win and that dog that makes you get ugly and nasty if you have to in order to win. My #3 is his biggest problem TBH i.m.o. But, #1 and #2 are legit concerns that could have affected his play so who knows.

Side note: if he made quicker reads he wouldn't need all that speed. If we had separation sooner and he was able to read it by checking out what should be available pre-snap - he would not need all that speed. He would be fast enough to keep the defense honest.

I will give you that to a point wood potter. The QB that will go down as the greatest is from Cali. Aaron Rodgers is also from Cali.

Never said, "it's never happened" but I shouldn't have generalized like that. My bad!

In my mind though, some of the recent Southern Cal QB's that were all going to be the next big thing in the league.

Josh Rosen - hailed as the next Payton Manning but just never quite hit that stride even in college.
Matt Barkley - was okay in college. Teased with his potential until going pro.
Matt Leinart - won the Heisman! But, look at the team he was on. Similar to Bama QB this year. Southern Cal had also just won outright or shared the NC(LSU in 03). 2005 was the Texas game w/Vince Young. His pro career showed more of the mentality that I am referring to.
Jimmy Clausen - had a somewhat up and down college career. Potential and pedigree gave him a chance still though in the NFL.
Matt Barkley -

That's what I mean and meant! Just show some more care in game. Trevor and Deshaun and even Tajh would go at least say something in their way of communicating.
To be fair to DJU - I imagine it's hard or was hard to care so much about a football game as you are 2300 miles away from home and your family is breaking up! It probably didn't register as critical because he had bigger things on his mind. Throw in the knee injury and a sometimes porous OL and carousel WR group and you get what the Tigers got from him.

He is 19 or 20 years old if he is that messed up from his parents getting a divorce then he needs to go sit through therapy and stop playing. That's just a BS excuse.

He has terribly missed on too many open receivers to complain about them dropping passes when he does miraculously get the ball to them in a catchable manner.

I'll bet he would have; except we had TP as backup QB who was hurt coming into the season. After him we had a couple of walk ons. Being who he is; he probably didn't want to let the team down. Playing through a knee injury has to give him something in terms of "heart and desire" as I think about it.

We will have to disagree on this part though. Especially being that age and being so far away from home; feeling helpless yet still having to be focused on what you are doing in class and on the football field. More seasoned adults would have a hard time with that; let alone someone his age! In no way shape or form is it an excuse.

Seriously: who you putting in his place then if he says, "I can't focus and play well enough"? If you think it's a non-factor along with the knee. Will Taylor was hurt and would have limited your passing game. I mean, come on here now.

You can’t throw accurately if you don’t set your feet - he tap dances in the pocket like his feet are on fire. This with not being confident (double clutches and aims his throws) doesn’t help.

Re: DJ's biggest problem

Dec 29, 2021, 11:17 PM

DJ did ok this game because they limited what he had to do and he still threw an int.

On the Iowa State Blitz, that should have been a touchdown but he didn't lead the receiver so the defender knocked it away.

The throw was fine.

The decision making on where to put the ball was not.

They were limiting his throws to spots and he hit his spots but it shows his limit as a QB.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He appears to be very nervous?

Dec 29, 2021, 11:26 PM

Maybe a psych. can help him with his nerves. And the coaches definitely do not trust him in RedZone situations. We are a used to a QB who throws it in the endzone, and finishes a game on their 5 yard line. Too many times this year and last year at Notre Dame, he messed up with only a couple minutes left, which gives the other team a chance to win or tie with that small amt of time left.

DJ was decent tonight. The O-Line is MAC-level quality and the WR corps has potential, but clearly lack experience and star power.

Yes, he’s not Randall Cunningham, but I thought he moved ok in the pocket versus previous games, avoided killer sacks, and only threw one bad pick.

The focus needs to be on this O-Line. Dabo should have the help wanted sign out and get at least 5 new OL transfers. If there isn’t a significant talent upgrade, neither DJ or Cade will look good.

DJ's biggest problem is he is a terrible passer

Dec 29, 2021, 11:37 PM

There are other issues, obviously. But front and center #1 is his inaccuracy. This is why the coaches did not trust him against Iowa State.

Looking at Big Dave, obesity is something DJ will battle his entire life. He obviously lost this battle between the 2020 and 2021 seasons. The extra 20-25 lbs was noticeable. Hopefully he can drop ~20 and come into spring practice with a bit more mobility.

Then there is everything else he needs to fix.

He's not a good quarterback and he is running a RPO system that showcases all his weaknesses. It's going to be night and day with Cade. Cade ran 200m track in high school and anticipates and leads his receivers and reads defenses like a young pro. He's a natural QB for our offense. I guarantee he will be the starter by our 4th game next year against Notre Dame.

DJ is not an intelligent QB. He has some physical skills but is not mentally sound in football IQ. DeShawn and TL were intelligent QBs who were students of the game. That is what it takes to elevate to Natty status and what CU will have in QB1 in 2022. Natural ability is what we will get back w Cole in 22.

Did you see the sharp accurate passes from Purdy! While DJU is of Clemson character, he has some serious growth needs and his agility is slow motion.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He's not just a slow runner...

Dec 30, 2021, 8:06 AM

he's is slow at processing what the defenses are doing so rather than read through his progressions, he tends to stare-down his primary receiver.

It was abundantly clear Wednesday night that neither the Clemson coaches nor the ISU coaches respected DJ's ability to throw the ball.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Re: He's not just a slow runner...

Dec 30, 2021, 10:00 AM

+1. Locks on to primary, then doesn’t anticipate; he waits for them to break open before throwing the ball. Because of this, defenders are allowed to close… they are rarely wide open. I’m sure he can improve in these respects, but I’m not sure he’ll ever be elite.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: DJ's biggest problem

Dec 30, 2021, 8:11 AM

That is a problem. His major problem is he can't throw under ANY pressure. If he had giraffes for receivers, he would be OK.
His other major problem is misreading every coverage every time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: DJ's biggest problem

Dec 30, 2021, 8:38 AM

Agree…the line has been good since mid-season…not great or even really good, but not the total disaster they were for the first 3-4 games. DJ is not only physically slow, but mentally slow as well. It sounds condescending to say, but that’s just a current trend. It means he needs simple options and lots of help from his center and receivers. Guys like him do really well against slightly outmatched opponents in lesser leagues, but unfortunately can never consistently match top level competition where constant adjustments have to be made and gameplay goes in phases. A good example is how Bama’ used tempo and the spread to tire UGA out because UGA brings maybe the largest and heaviest line in football. As soon as Bama saw them laboring heavy to get back to the line, they blasted the seams and used beautiful dig routes. Then, once they had them off the line, ran the ball. I don’t think DJ could ever mentality wrap himself around a multi stage attack like that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

BS - his biggest problem has been

Dec 30, 2021, 9:22 AM

not having a consistent lineup of receivers all season (we're down 7 by the bowl game and starting 3rd team WRs) or a consistent O-line - they had a different alignment almost every game, and our starting center was out in the bowl game. Not many QBs could put up good numbers while dealing with this many WR changes, this many OL changes, his own injuries, and being surrounded by youth on all sides.

Yes, he has his issues for sure, but he is not his biggest problem. His biggest problem has been that he's almost been playing with a different team each week, and one lacking in experience and on-the-field leadership.

He has a baseball style throwing motion and it just takes way to long to get the football out of his hands. Brock Purdy was a 3 star and he looked 100x better than DJ, and we would probably be undefeated with that level of qb play. Tons of them in D1.
