Did Jack even recruit Roth?

Jun 16, 2012, 11:50 PM

Seems like all Roth does is win. Maybe Jack didn't feel Roth fit into his style of play.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why would he have?

Jun 16, 2012, 11:53 PM

Roth was not this great starting pitcher from the get go...even tanner had him as a 2-3 inning pitcher UNTIL low and behold, he pitched against us in CWS....the rest is history

Does it really matter?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes it matters. He is from Greer SC. 30 miles from CU

Jun 17, 2012, 12:09 AM

Michael Roth from freaking Greer SC! Was he always a Coot fan or did Clemson not go after him? He has beat us umpteen times so hell yeah it matters!

Re: Yes it matters. He is from Greer SC. 30 miles from CU

He was recruited as a first baseman. Pitching was a hobby.

Jack needs to recruit more first basemen.

Clemson had Ben Paulsen on board...

Jun 17, 2012, 1:51 AM

and Richie Shaffer on the way. Michael Roth wouldn't have beat out either one of them to play first.

Roth's sister attended Clemson and no Jack didn't recruit him. Also, our big lefthanded freshman pitcher Montgomery. His parents and grandparents attended Clemson. He wasn't recruited by Jack either and of course everyone know the Scott Wingo story.

Thank you, I think?

pitched that much, or even started, until he beat us in the 2010 CWS. Tanner started him bc he was a slow throwing lefty. If you remember correctly, when we resumed play against OU in the 2nd game of the CWS, they put a slow throwing lefty on the mound that shut us down. Tanner saw that and walked Roth out to the ound hoping for the best. If OU doesnt make that move after a rain delay pushed the last half of the game back a day, then Tanner never uses Roth. If we had just beat Roth, he would be a nobody right now.

I also think he shoulda prevented this whole sub-prime mortgage crap and I blame him for global warming too. Tanner didn't think too highly of Roth either, he was a little used bullpen player until Tanner was compelled to give him a chance in the CWS. Sometimes other teams do well without it being our coach's fault.

Grandson went to school with Roth. said he wanted to come to clemson and Jack did not recruit him.

Try this on for size...

Jun 17, 2012, 1:54 AM

When Tyler Colvin was in HS, Ray Tanner told him he wasn't good enough to play major college baseball and made no effort to recruit him. I believe he grew up a Gamecock fan. How well did THAT turn out? Glad he went to Clemson.

Worked out well, but better for Roth with 2 national titles and back again this year.Just saying....

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But the point was...

Jun 17, 2012, 2:01 AM

sometimes players develop that you don't expect. Some people get so worked up over whether or not coach Leggett recruits some kid that grew up a Clemson fan and the same people don't bother to admit that it goes both ways. Michael Roth was a mediocre HS first baseman and a part-time left-handed specialist until the 2010 College World Series. Stop acting like he was some ace pitcher that Clemson overlooked during the recruiting process.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No. He prefers players from Maine.

Jun 17, 2012, 7:01 AM

Go Jack Go!!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Jack sent Roth a lobsta roll***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're lying...

Jun 17, 2012, 12:34 PM [ in reply to No. He prefers players from Maine. ]

but that isn't a surprise. There are more players from SC than from ALL of the Northeast on Clemson's 2012 roster. Ray Tanner recruits out-of-state too. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that South Carolinians can be so narrow-minded. It's why we wind up with the idiots running things in Columbia that we have. Some of you really are embarrassments to Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Roth was not recruited as a pitcher by anyone

Jun 17, 2012, 9:58 AM

He was a position player. No one..nottanner or anmyone saw this happening. Sometimes better lucky than good.

What everyone who followed baseball around Greenville knew was Roth was the best player on lots of championship teams. Not luck to know to recruit players like that.

Roth was also Mr. Baseball his senior year. I'd say a lot of people knew who he was.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why would a top notch recruit from SC

Jun 17, 2012, 2:00 PM

go to Clemson. I'm sure they read these sites and see Clemson fans continue to say they don't care about baseball. Leggett is lucky to get some recruits from far away where this is not so well known.
