Corners

Im going to point out that while we’ve produced great secondary into the NFL for a long time, our corners have failed us at critical points

Great athletes like Nate Wiggins, AJ Terrell, Cordrea Tankersley, Mack. Alexander, Byron Maxwell, etc.

I’d say the demise started in 2019 against LSU. And there were shades of it starting when we played Ohio State before LSU that year.

Highly competitive football against Joe Burrow and Chase and Jefferson. That is simply the best offense in CFB history.

AJ had literally no answer for Chase.

Our safeties couldn’t help back up our cornerbacks because….Oh yeah right, Tanner Muse was one of the safeties.

The next year, 2020 Sugar Bowl against Ohio State. That was as bad as any loss we’ve had under Dabo. It literally looked as if again, our corners had zero answers.

Deep ball after deep ball.

And now again, you could’ve predicted that our corners were going to screw up against Texas. Whether that be by penalties, or giving up long plays.

Both happened.

Do we trust that Avieon Terrell is going to play well against top talent? What about Jeadyn Lukus? Shelton Lewis?

I always have confidence in this unit during the season, but they’ve continued to let down in the big games.

It’s crazy how one corner playing lockdown could you win a national championship

Spot on analysis! To compete for NC a team cannot have weaknesses. That isn’t to say you’re always going to win the game but more times than not you will.

Terrell-Hampton will be the best tandem in the ACC

Safety play is, and has been, more of a concern imo

Cornerback and safety play is not what cost the game against Texas. 46 carries for 292 yards at 6.35 yards per carry is what cost the Texas game! Secondary gave up 200 yards passing, which isn’t great. But the run d lost the game and that isn’t anything but strength and will to win.

Exactly my thoughts too. Run defense.***

Well to clarify, I personally didn’t say that our secondary costed us the game against Texas

But a counter to that you’ve got to realize that there are 11 tacklers on the field. Not just the front 4 and linebackers plugging up at the point of attack.

There were numerous plays against Texas that our corners and safeties could’ve made big game-impacting tackles, but they didnt.

So, my point good defenses have tacklers all around. We’ve had those defenses so you know what I mean.

Jayron Kearse was a crucial part of our run defense while he was here

So was Tanner Muse, and more

Corner is probably the hardest position to play on defense. It’s so determined by reaction and recovery that only the best of the best athletes can play it. There’s minus athletes that can excel at every other position on the field due to other attributes, but not so with cornerback.

LSU and OSU’s WRs burned a lot of good corners those years. I remember that being one of the biggest reasons Chase went so high in the draft. NFL scouts said well AJ Terrell is an NFL starting corner and he did this to him, so he’s the real deal.

Our corners get better every year under Mike Reed. He puts out consistent NFL talent and I don’t see that slowing down.

Where we really dropped off is line play. NFL corners aren’t covering a guy for longer than 4-5 seconds. If the line gets no pressure, the cornerbacks look worse.

Glad I saw your post. I was typing something very similar but no need to.

I love you Roy, but I'd have to say what Mike did. If you go back and listen to that natty game, Kirk said time and again that JB had to drop a spectacular dime to complete said pass. LSU was simply an NFL team. We were too except at line.

I will still say to this day, the osu game that year is Dabo's best win. 19, and 20 was CBV's best defense coach games/years he had with us. Both years he had little to work with. He knew the holes and almost pulled a miracle off.

As for 2020. Day should have won it all. He had an NFL oline that year and treated a pretty decent dline like ragdolls. Both games as Mike said won the day. OSU, like Texas, beat us up on the ground.

Experience of these young corners will come in to play.

Our secondary started over with young cats in ‘23-‘24

We recruited well too, so get ready for some growth as our secondary coaches have been great at developing their players.

Safety positions should be better too!

We’ll find out, the big thing is staying healthy!

We could move a RB to Safety to help out if need be too.

Isn't Ronan pegged for safety? We're thin. I'm hoping some spots open post spring so we can get an experienced safety and LB. Doesn't have to be a ready-made stud but a depth piece for one year only. In fact, we Don't need a multi year guys.

Having a dominant front 4 like the year previously helps the secondary a ton as well. It doesn't matter how great you are, nobody can stay in coverage forever. And I'm still going to point out the push off Chase had on AJ for their first TD, we played well to start that game. But that front 4 made that defense from 2016-2018. It always starts in the trenches to make everyone else's job easier.

Unless we lose someone unexpectedly our CB room isn't even in the top 10 things I'd worry about for next season.

I don’t really worry about cornerbacks at all

It’s close to becoming elite again

I meant in my OP that since 2018, we’ve fallen from “elite” when you talk about actual success on the field.

Ummmmmm how long do you think a CB can cover when the QB feels no pressure?? During our run the DL and LBs made the secondary look much better do to the constant pressure on the QB. Wes constantly had the secondary playing 5 yards off the line and rarely blitzing. You’re never going to find CBs who can consistently follow WRs everywhere they go.

Terrell had a tough year to put it nicely. he committed more pass interference than any cb in history.
He may be better but was a liability last year for us. It is certainly a point of concern going into the season. Safety is also concerning, with no proven depth and really no proven starters that played well .Hopefully, Coach Allen can breathe new life into them all. The images of TEXAS running for 300 + yards is just hard to erase.

They develop of course

Nate Wiggins didn’t start out looking like what he is today

Many don’t

I think Aveion will be a great one for Clemson in the regular season

It’s just when we reach the playoffs.

How does he stack up against Jeremiah Smith? Evan Stewart?

Kyren Lacey for LSU is a highly regarded prospect. I think we’ll see Aveion on him, and it’ll be interesting

The bottom line is dabo isnt getting the talent we use to when we were elite. It’s not just our corners…talent has dropped off at every position. Facts!

Since the Ford twins graduated in 1996, it has been down hill for the CBs....

Joking aside, I think we will be fine, but Terrell has to learn how to play physical without getting 5 PIs per game.

Our DBs have always been handsie, but you have to learn how to manage it with the refs. They have the talent, just need to be coached up.
