Maybe because they realize it is not "College" football. It is semi-pro football where we pamper 18 to 21 year olds and pay them at the same time.

I suspect some of it is people are disgusted with the state of the sport, i.e., it's professional football, not college, and all regionalism of the sport is being destroyed.

Let’s wait a bit. There have only been 2 or 3 matchups worth watching since the season began.

Funny, after 2-hrs on hold I just dropped all Spectrum services. They made no attempt to offer me anything.
My plan is to find the games where I have to find them. I’m not planning to restore the service either.
I have two short term rentals, so I may have to capitulate there.

Spectrum stepped up their game when we called. It only took one hour to cancel instead of two.

if it makes them feel better, but the Charter-ESPN dispute has very little to do with the decline in viewership. People are simply fed up with the bias, NIL, and the transfer portal.

I don't believe that is all due to Spectrum's dropping ESPN. Most people subscribe to streaming services instead of using cable. Maybe the state of the sport has something to do with it. For instance, players coming and going, conferences being raided and disappearing, and teams composed mostly of players that used to be on other teams. There is no consistency in college football.

I believe that you have captured the essence of what stinks (see what I did here) about college football.
Long response to follow (below):
College FB, much more so than NFL FB, is founded in tradition.
Traditional rivalries between teams still means a lot for most CFB fans.
Competing for a title in a traditional FB conference with (at least some) traditional rivalries still means a lot.
This aspect of college FB had been recognized by NCAA and the various networks which covered the various conferences. That is why invitation to CFP gave special weighting to conference champions, instead of just picking four teams from among the SEC, B1G, and from USC, TX, and N.Dame.
(*). Now we have two platforms that dominate the airing of games to the public; both platforms have placed big bets that a boom in viewership from the expanded playoffs had only minimal downside. ESPN and the consortium of Fox / CBS / NBC (the ‘content providers’) could not have predicted that the accelerating expansion of the big bucks SEC and B1G conferences … whose competition to expand via acquisition of new high profile (ratings-worthy) teams … would lead to the destruction of a famous & respected conference (PAC 12) and the schizophrenic realignment of the Big 12. These two ‘content providers’ certainly saw that they had the power to either blackmail the third party viewership platforms that did not own the CFB ‘content’ -or- bypass those third party viewership platforms via the content providers’ own streaming networks.
(*). I doubt that the two mega-beast ‘content provider’ entities understood the risk that their CFB ‘content’ would create significant end-customer apathy (via disengagement by disillusioned former fans of demolished conferences and traditional rivalry games).
(***). Market Watch had predicted that Disney will spin off ABC (along with ESPN) before end of 2023 so that their ‘content’ products can be sold directly (via Hulu &/or other streaming services) to end customers … and cutting off any incalcitrant cable providers such as Charter / Spectrum and maybe X-Finity / Comcast) if need be. Without Big Daddy Disney as a financial backstop for ESPN, it is not beyond reason that ESPN’s and Fox / CBS / NBC consortiums’ future CFB contracts for will become LESS lucrative instead of more lucrative for the CFB teams which ‘create’ the content. Unpredicted levels of viewer apathy from former CFB fans of the ‘foresaken’ conferences / teams could be the catalyst that screws up the revenue models for the SEC and B1G all out of proportion to the damage to the revenue models for the ‘also ran’ conferences.
We’ll see.

I wasn't interested in the FSU game. Watched n.carolina for a few minutes. Watched a few minutes of tcu...
But there really was much going on. Did the big 10 even play a big game?
I don't think s.carolina vs unc on prime time Saturday 🌃 was must see tv.
I believe it's all cupcakes this weekend too.

Not surprising. This was the weakest opening week of games that I can remember in long time, and ESPN has lost its monopoly on CFB. If you noticed, a lot of the bigger games on Saturday were on FOX, CBS, and NBC.

“Despite the ongoing blackout of ESPN networks for 14.7 million subscribers, the network’s Sept. 3 coverage of Florida State-LSU drew an average of 9.1 million viewers, its best Labor Day Sunday college football game since 2016.”
