Clemson Half Time Show was Horrible!

Sep 21, 2008, 3:26 AM

SC State band show was great.

I am not comparing the 2 bands. The Clemson band performances have been lame for a good while now. Today was the ultimate---You have a nice marching band and what do you do--have 3 singers scream into microphones trying to be heard over the band. The band marches for about one minute. Wow!

Plus, the National Anthem was bad. I don't know where you sit but from where I sit, the singing and the band sound was hitting my ears at very different times. It was ridiculous.

Lastly I will compare the 2 bands. I felt embarrased for Tiger Band today. The SC State band was so superior in sound and innovation that they were like from a different planet.

I agree. They didn't even march onto the field***********

Tiger band sucks. I know, I was in it.

The reason you can hardly hear them is because half of them don't play their instruments.

There's something in these hills.

First off, they really screwed the pooch playing early before the busses were in sight.

I was on the north side of the stadium and couldn't really hear the halftime show. I was kinda glad I couldn't.

The thing that annoys me is that this "new" (he has been here for a while) director feels the need to get on the ladder and conduct the songs. Why do they have students who are drum majors? Let the students conduct the band.

I wish they wouldn't do that "Tiger Fanfare" before the Orange Bowl March. The "fanfare" is lame. Thats yet another addition by the new director that he feels the need to conduct.

Tiger Band is a band of volunteers. Thats a great thing. I just don't care for the way that the director runs things.

Now hold on one minute!

I might get blasted here but I am going to interject this into the conversation. Folks... Do you know how tough it is to prepare 4 different shows in 6 weeks?

I was a member of Tiger Band a few years back, and thats tough. Remember, 60~70% of Tiger Band is made up of good but not great players.. Remember most kids are here to study engineering/chemistry, not the trumpet or tuba. The reasons things have not went so smoothly is really a result of having 4 straight home game. When was the last time that happend?

As for the marching 101 they were big and loud.. But I dont know what they were playing. Maybe others do. But I could not tell what it was and I was paying attention to them. What I do find amazing is how they have convinced so many people at SC State to join the band. Maybe they have a music major and thats the main reason. But it seems like the whole school loves that band and it makes people want to join and be apart of it. I wish us Clemson folks could do that for Tiger Band. I think it would be awesome to have a 500 member band.

Anyway I just wanted to point out that the prep time for the first few shows has not been there. And to please keep that in mind when throwing out comments.

Okay. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but don't do so many shows. Some college bands play 1 or 2 shows a season. Most college bands don't practice near as much as some high school bands. It makes sense that you shouldn't try so many shows.

When it comes to shows, I say quality over quantity.

at 3:26 in the morning you are bitching about the band??????

Sep 21, 2008, 8:33 AM

at least 2 points:
the higer ups do not work to improve the band and,
get a focus on something more important

I worry about the band alot.

Our band is outclassed by just about every band we see...

Sep 21, 2008, 9:47 AM

throughout the year. The ultimate embarrassment was when we played Tenn. in the peach bowl. That was sad.

Amen! Our band is terrible and it has nothing to do with the 200 students in the band. It has to do with Mr. Spede and the songs they play. Think about it,
"Ride the Tiger", "Go First Down Cheer", come on those songs are terrible. Auburn made us look bad last year too!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bingo! Peach Bowl was really bad for our band.

Sep 21, 2008, 11:10 AM [ in reply to Our band is outclassed by just about every band we see... ]

We went first at the Peach Bowl. I was on my way to the concession stand when I caught a glimpse of Tennessee's band following ours. I sat right back down and enjoyed a great show that I have yet to see from our band.

The best part of the show

Sep 21, 2008, 9:58 AM

was the end....the poor Clemson kids were finished, watching on the sidelines....SCST just marched right right over and started givin' it to em....

Not that I thought the SCST show contained any musical value (other than the ability to play loud), but that part made me chuckle...

5yds away from Tiger Band, givin' em the business...

FWIW, I would not like to see Tiger Band do anything of that nature....the entertainment value comes from the fact that SCST is so far from being a fundamental, musically talented marching band its pathetic.

Why are we having this conversation? It's not like Clemson fans ever give a crap about Tiger Band unless you dont hear Tiger Rag, or something like yesterday happens, i.e. bigger, louder band with crappy music fundamentals comes in and "outplays" TB.

Dump the hot, hokey military uniforms and go like the Texas Longhorn band. A show band. Forget the American Idol atmosphere, even if that is how you spend your TV time. WE don't.

I recognized a few of the songs they played, as did most of the students. They played "Closer" by Ne-Yo and "Whatever You Like" by T.I. They also played "Put On" by Young Jeezy when they were in the stands. We were playing that song for the defense over the loud speakers.

As for the technical skill, blah, blah, blah, they can save that for a band competition. At halftime, I want to be entertained and that is what they did.
