Can the ground cause a fumble? NCAA Rulebook says

Oct 5, 2009, 4:55 PM

According to Rule 4-1-3-b, a live ball becomes dead:

"When any part of the ball carrier’s body, except his hand or foot, touches the ground or when the ball carrier is tackled or otherwise falls and loses possession of the ball as he contacts the ground with any part of his body, except his hand or foot."

Since no part of Parker's body, other than his hand or foot, touched the ground, the ball was still live, thus when he lost possession, it was a fumble. There is no rule indicating or otherwise implying that it is a dead ball when a live ball touches the ground while in possession of the ball carrier.

Good point - I was just trying to answer a question.***

Can the ground help catch a pass?

Oct 5, 2009, 5:28 PM

The TD pass reviewed by the refs should be what folks are upset about. I was absolutely floored it wasn't overturned.

Yeah they probably would have scored anyhow but come on...there was no question it was incomplete.

It was 3rd down so had that pass been ruled incomplete

Oct 5, 2009, 5:31 PM

they would have likely kicked a field goal. It had a major affect on the game.

It's just a shame we don't take care of business and then we wouldn't even be focusing on bad calls.

You sure...I thought it was 2nd down.***

Actually 1st and goal from the 4. Proof inside if needed.

Below is a link to the play by play on CNN-SI. You can scroll down to the 2nd Qtr. 40 seconds left in the half if you don't believe.

However, knowing how it hurt me to look it up, I suggest you take my word for it.

The ground can certainly cause a fumble, even though 99% of the broadcasters seem to think otherwise.

Wrong thread, but I agree with what you wrote.***
