He's had some bad moments just as every young player will and no he's not a Deshaun or Trevor but the WR corp and Oline exacerbate those moments for a young player. The issues with our offense are and have been WR and Offensive line.
Matt Luke will fix the line for sure. WR is another story.
With that said, Cade Klubnik will be the next Bo Nix in that he's a very talented recruit that goes from forgotten to Heisman contender. Mark my words.

Cade weighs 205 already. How much do you think he needs to weigh? He is solid as a rock and all muscle now. Be careful what you wish for.

He doesn’t have the body to hold 215. I think 210 is his max. You can tell he’s naturally lean.

Dude is 6’ 2” at best. Guys on the radio even said last year when he arrived that the 6’2” is generous.
And okay. If he ever reaches 220 lbs during his time at Clemson I’ll eat my words. But I’ll put money down that he’ll never play at that weight.
Trevor is 6’ 5” and would weigh in at 220 at camp then play at 215 during the season. Even now he’s listed as 220 in the NFL at 24 years old.

He also doesn't look incredibly muscular.
I know he's worked hard to gain weight, and he's definitely done that, but I worry about his durability at his current weight.

I have to disagree. I see a lot of potential in him, but he was below average this year. WR issues and oline didnt help, but he just wasn't very consistent this year.
I look for a huge improvement next year!

Nothing wrong with that.
There are no OLs holding up a defense for more than 2-4 seconds. It’s up the QB to step up to avoid rushes, while keeping as much of the field in front of him as possible.
It wasn’t that Cade was just getting blasted by an incoming rush. Defenses are coming no matter who the OL is, and we didn’t see anything radically abnormal with the opponents rush. What we didn’t have is a seasoned QB who understands where pressure is coming from, buys time while scanning the field.
Cade is rushing. Panicking. Running out of the pocket at the first sign of a (inevitable) rush. He needs to slow down and process things better. That’s what great QBs do to help their OL.

caused that inconsistency. Too often he was having to try to play hero ball.
^ This. That said, when I’ve seen All-22 footage of Cade’s play, time after time he missed better options because he’s not processing the coverage and making better decisions with the ball. These are things that aren’t as obvious while watching a game. So the question is whether this is lack of development or loss of confidence in his Oline and WRs. Right now I think it’s a mixture of both, and best explains why his performances have been so inconsistent. In games where the line plays better he’s able to get into a rhythm and elevate the play of the receivers. Thus, with a better line play I think Cade will finally start clicking with the speed of the game and improve his decisions each play from scrimmage.

Paraphrasing a post comment I made yesterday
Several things on offense need to get repaired:
* O-line needs to move people on run plays and protect QB on pass plays...
* If O-line can give QB another half-second or so AND Klubnik can learn to go through his progressions instead of locking onto option #1, chunk yards will happen
* WRs need to either block and block well or run a route for separation, whichever the play calls for
A very good QB will struggle when the O-line is not giving him time and/or receivers are not getting open. Klubnik misses on his progressions, often locking in on option #1, but I wonder how much of that is because he doesn't feel like he has time to cycle through the options. Not to mention, WRs not running routes to get themselves open with any real regularity.
[Edit] And also WRs and TEs need to catch a ball when it hits them in the hands or chest.

He's got to learn to manage the game. Many times he would force a pass instead of running for the first down. Hopefully everything will slow down for him and he learns to see the whole field. Would love to see him have a great bowl game.

It’s all mental. He really has all the physical tools. This is a study, study, study situation. Think Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. Why were they great? Film study.
Now, yes improved OL and WR play all help.

They are a package deal. QB, WR and OL all need to make great progress in the offseason and have that translate on the field. Everything else looks pretty solid, RB, DL, LB, Secondary and hopefully this Freshman Kicker we are bringing in is as good advertised.

Tons of upside imo, but can be very inaccurate at times. Year under his belt and I expect to see an huge improvement over 2023.
OC needs to keep the QB run an option more imo. I think he has the wheels to be very effective.

If Cade can make the same level up improvement from his first starting season to his second under Riley as DJ did under Streeter, we could be in for something special for sure in '24. Cade essentially posted 2nd year DJ #'s in season 1, so he's got a much higher platform to improve on going forward.

Our offensive problems have involved every offensive position

And arguably, every position group of players AND coaches. For 3 years, our offensive issues have plagued us. It wasn’t just Streeter, DJ and Cade. Hiring Riley last year was a good start and Matt Luke’s hire oughta help next year. But for the life of me, I cannot see how Dabo does not think we have a problem with coaching wr’s.

Four things about our WR over the last 3 years:
1. Jeff Scott would not let you on the field if you could not block. (blocking has been terrible especially on screens)
2. Every receiver used to stay after practice and use that catch machine (Way too many drops lately!)
3. Injury's have prevented chemistry to develop between the QB and receivers.
4. No big body receivers that can go up and win the ball.

Clemson fans have been spoiled by 2 generational QBs in Watson & Trevor
1
Dec 14, 2023, 12:09 PM
|
|
College football fans in general expect highly-rated high school QBs to come in and ball out as Freshmen. It does happen and happened twice in a short period at Clemson. Not too long ago, maybe 15 plus years ago, at a powerhouse like FSU, Florida, USC, etc , a stud QB would redshirt their freshman year, work up to 2nd string during their RS-Soph year and contend to start their junior year. All the while developing, watching film, and being coached with less pressure on themselves, coaches, and from fans.
Now, there is an expectation of starting from day one. Maybe Arch Manning sitting for a year or two would be good for his development. Dante Moore going to visit Oregon despite Dillon Gabriel committing might be a sign he would rather take a year to develop and learn rather than being rushed into action like he was at UCLA.

He has been getting the same time as every P5 QB and he has open receivers every play.
Until he can improve the offense will look no different. We could have 5 Tee Higgins and it wouldn’t matter if Cade doesn’t see them.

Cade absolutely has been “part” of the problem. If you think it was all on WR and OL then you weren’t watching. There were times he had time and couldn’t work through progressions and miss open WR. He’s got to learn to calm himself and show poise. He also was at fault for some of those fumbles.
The reason we looked completely inept with all three positions struggled.

Listen...Yes the OL was bad...But its time people stop lying to themselves here....KC is not that good and his progression this season has been nonexistent. He continues to make bad reads, abandons the pocket, and is careless with the ball...Hes not very good and not what Clemson is accustom to having.

It all begins with the man under center. The offense will go as he goes.
He has enough time. He has open receivers. Guys denying this are just spewing something they heard elsewhere and aren’t truly watching what’s happening in the 2nd and 3rd levels.
Cade is the answer. If he improves, the offense improves. If he doesn’t then it doesn’t matter who the OL or WRs are.

Yes, the QB situation is most all of the issue.

Crazy turnovers and a missed kick also played a huge role.
There are no great teams without great QB play and you simply can’t say teams with less overall talent didn’t do better because they had great QB play.
Cade is the biggest issue. The run game has been fine and he’s been truly pressured on only 30% of the passing plays.
Thing is, Cade panics at the very first sight of a rush. He immediately panics and rolls mainly to his right. It’s a panic habit. Whether in panic mode or not, even when standing in a clean pocket, Cade is not seeing the field and all of his options. He’s not stepping up and buying time. He’s not working through progressions and focuses on one guy. Every single play this offense has passing options and nearly every passing play there are one or more guys running free. Cade is not seeing things well and he’s his own worst enemy when he panics.
Any great QB is calm in the pocket. They step up, they buy time (and help any OL), and they see the whole field. These things are mandatory for any offense to work, and Cade just is NOT there yet.
That’s obvious. If you knew what you were looking at instead of taking a shotgun complain approach, then you’d have noticed these things. There are guys open and the offense is waiting on the QB to calm down and become great.
These are the facts.

I'm not concerned with his weight. I would like to see him take better care of the football in the future, and Cade needs to make better decisions in passing and with RPO.
Improvement from the OL and WR groups will help him as well.

I agree with your assessment. If you watched any of the Oregon State games, you saw they had a beast of an offensive line that gave DJ plenty of time to sit in the pocket and make decisions and find open receivers. DJ had a great year, but it wasn’t because he improved, It’s because he played behind a much better offensive line.

Once the oline is better he will be more confident in the pocket and have better command. He is jittery but it’s because the oline caves like butter.
With the wide receiver problem, they need to get separation period. Nobody is attacking on their routes. I don’t think they expect Cade to be throwing the ball. I think everyone knows how bad the oline is and the receivers just expect him to be running for his life. That may have a lot to do with the lack of separation and route running

Cade is definitely playing a lot better this year. But, the interception against Wake was throwing to a guy with four, maybe 5 guys around the receiver. Somebody had to be open. His biggest problem is trying to make the difficult pass, instead of finding and hitting the open one. One or several receivers are open on most plays. Wide receiver blocking as a whole is terrible. They seem to wanna avoid contact, instead of laying the wood to someone.
