Anyone else have a hard time trusting dentists?

I don't mean to be disrespectful or a conspiracy theorist, but I feel like every time I see a dentist they want to proactively do expensive work on me when my teeth are without pain and relatively healthy. They like to use scare tactics and say "if we don't do this now it could be a problem in the future."

I don't know... I'm an easy going person but sometimes I feel like I should stand up for myself and say "no thanks, I'm fine for now"

Thoughts?

My dentist (a Clemson graduate) tells me what i need and lets me decide if and when I want to do it. No pressure.

If he’s near the golden corner let me know his name. I’m looking for a dentist.

I had a similar thought during my last visit as well. I believe they filled a cavity that I'm more than certain didn't exist and yes they used a similar line of "we should take care of this now to avoid problems in the future." I haven't had a cavity since 1983 and I think they were finally tired of not making any money off my visits.

Stay away from corporate owned dental practices. Often, they hire dentists who are paid on work performed. I go to a Clemson grad dentist whom I trust implicitly and is independent.

Corporate dental groups are not always owned by dentists. Dental offices used to be owned by the dentist or dentists at the office. Now many dental offices are owned by corporations or investment groups with a keen eye towards the bottom line. I don’t think they necessarily recommend bogus treatment, that would be malpractice, but maybe it’s not treatment you need now. Dental issues don’t go away on their own and generally do get worse overtime if left untreated but you can be presented with an elaborate and expensive treatment plan and made to feel it’s all urgent when that’s not the case.

Yeah, places like Aspen Dental. I went to one of those years ago thinking it would be cheap. It was not. Will never go back to a place like that.

True. Just because it's in a big box shopping center next to a Walmart doesn't make it cheap.

32 years ago had filling come out while eating a Now and Later. Went to a young dentist and he informed me that I needed all ten of my fillings replaced. Went to an older dentist for a second opinion and told him what the first dentist had said. He laughed and said there nothing wrong with my fillings except for the one that came loose. The first dentist was just trying to make money. 32 years later and no issues.

I went to a large periodontist practice and the periodontist wanted to do a $6000 gum graft on all of my rear teeth to cover the roots. I initially agreed, after seeing their business manager (think used car salesman ...... no offense to used car salesmen) and then later called and cancelled the surgery. Fast forward eight years, my dentist wants me to go back to a periodontist and he recommends the same periodontist that had seen me at the large practice but was now on their own. I agreed, but dreaded it as I was sure they were going to recommend the same surgery. I go to this periodontist, they examine my teeth, and never mention gum surgery. I have been going back to this same periodontist twice a year for cleanings for the last six years and not a word about gum surgery. I am sure they did not remember seeing me at the large practice and recommending surgery, but isn't it odd that I needed it 15 years ago, but don't need it now!

I had to go to the dentist this morning with three broken teeth

The dentist asked me "What happened?"

I replied "Well, my wife decided to make roast chicken last night, but it was way overcooked and it was extremely dry and hard."

The dentist said "Well you should have told her it was overcooked and refused to eat it.

I said "That's what I did."

Ask how it can be a problem? When do you think it could be a problem, to get a time frame? You can always get a second opinion. Are they just changing out a silver filling or a potential cavity or something else? Get pictures or x-rays to get a second opinion.

The first Ms. The Mole worked for a married dentist in the summers (while she was going to CU as an older student) so his secretary could have summers off. Three summers later she married him.

I always said she thought alot of her teeth. Constantly looking at them...poking at them. I guess it was bound to happen.

Funny story and evidence of a small world...I was dating a girl 2-3 years after my divorce. She confessed one night that she had recently been seeing a married guy, but she broke it off because she felt guilty about it. Come to find out, it was the same dentist!

It's fine to ask for a second opinion, especially if the treatment suggested is major. This is one of your most personal professional relationships, and there has to be trust on both sides. We're always taught that prevention is better/cheaper than repair. For example, why do you regularly change your oil and filter? Your auto is running fine with no signs of damage, and oil changes have certainly increased in cost. I agree with many of the other Tigers in this thread that corporate dentistry sould not be your first or second choice, and it is alarming at the increased dental care fee over the last 5 years. Brush/floss/rinse only the teeth that you want to keep.

I just spent $5000.Having a tooth surgically removed and a titanium rod stuck down in my jaw for having the same attitude and kicking the can down the road.
That's not counting the actual permanent tooth that's got to go on top of the rod. That's another couple of grand you do the math..
