Anybody a D1 athletics NCAA eligibility expert ?

So short version is my nephew lives in the Midwest and has an offer from a D1 FCS school to walk on for football in January of 2022. Kid will graduate from high school in a few weeks and obviously is looking to go somewhere where he
Starts on campus this fall. My question is if he starts at this school that offered him in January but attends a community college in Sept to take classes before going there he isn’t using up any eligibility for this fall season right ?
I mean my understanding is you get four years of playing eligibility no matter if your at that school for four, five or maybe six years. Help me get a better understanding of how the NCAA policy works here.....Thx

just taking classes this fall, or wanting to compete on an athletic team at the junior college?
Never mind, this says the clock starts ticking when you enroll at any college, says nothing about whether you compete or not.

Double check this, but I am pretty sure that your "5 year clock" (including a redshirt year) starts the day you enter a college, university, or junior/community college.
I don't think you can go to a JUCO without your "clock" starting.

As a former school counselor, I never had this situation with a student. If he is still in school, most kids aren't now, his counselor can help him. Also, the NCAA website is a good resource. I think the best thing for him to do is go to the college he's interested in and meet with the compliance officer, so that he can get the skinny straight from the horse's mouth. Good luck to him in whatever he decides!

I think that if he enrolls at the CC, and is a part-time student (under 12 hours), the clock won’t start until he’s at the four-year school. But check with Compliance. A lot of ifs and howevers in the NCAA Manual.

That is correct. Full-time enrollment starts clock. Enroll in less than full-time. Do not enroll FT and drop to PT after classes start.

Yes. Your "eligibility clock" starts the second you enroll at any college, whether you play or not. That includes junior college.
If you don't want to burn eligibility, I'd suggest prep. That's the only way around. Prep is like an extra year of high school; it gets you another year in the shop window and a way to generate film. A good example would be, for instance, Palmetto Prep here in South Carolina (I'd recommend them, they're good people). That does not burn eligibility and gets a lot more college looks. If you think he's got the ability and just hasn't gotten enough looks and might be good enough for a scholarship, this might be the way to go.
