VT is not even close to being the worst team in the ACC in MBB. They have lost multiple games by 5 or fewer points--2 to the Tigers by a total of 4. Their next 4 games are at home vs Duke, Syracuse and UVA and 1 at Miami. Don't be surprised if they win 3 or more of those. Clemson's defense and the crowd were the difference tonight. Dillon Hunter had a breakout game today. His ball protection and defense vs Pedulla were game changers without Chase Hunter in the lineup.

Correct @Cobbox, the people that deny Brownell team’s defensive prowess haven’t been watching. There have been periods of offensive drought, and teams that lacked offensive firepower, not to mention teams that found ways to lose close games in puzzling ways. But our defense has always been scrappy and certainly more dependable than our offense over the years. But this team finds ways to win close ACC games. THAT is something we’ve never really had, at least in the past 50 years. It could have something to do with coaching, but if keeping BB on some kind of Tnet hot seat keeps the masses happy, then so be it. I hate to stir the haters, but BB and Dabo are going to be our head coaches for the foreseeable future. Better lean into it!

Cobbox you say 2 things over and over.
1. Lunatic Fringe 2. Basketball people know Brownell is a good coach.
If #2 is true and basketball people know he’s not supported properly (your words in the past not mine), why in 12+ years has a basketball school that devotes more resources not come after him? You see it in all sports every year that a program/franchise goes and gets a coach/player they believe does more with less. If what you say is true BB, would’ve already been taken from us. If we go to at least the sweet 16 I bet he doesn’t get one job offer.

Our team defensive ranking is 101st. We finished the season 181st last year. He typically finishes below 100. That quote is mindless blather.

Would be interested to know where you're getting those statistics... We're 61st in total defensive efficiency this season per Kenpom... In the previous 5 seasons, we've only finished outside the top 33 once in defensive efficiency (last season). Three of those years we were top 20, with one of those being top 10.

Its points allowed per 100 possessions. Warren Nolan. 61st in defensive efficiency isn’t great either - especially against the competition we’ve faced. The idea that we are particularly good at defense under Brad is a total fallacy.

We gave up 50 points to VT. Pretty solid defensive game!

The coach of an opponent that lost complimented that team?!?! You sir have found the epitome of an unbiased reference on Brownell’s tenure. Stats be ######. First year head coach John Scheyer (it would help your claims to authority if you could spell a name right) says Brownell is a defensive stud.

Imagine winning a basketball game while holding a team to 50 points, and coming to the basketball board to argue our team sucks at defense. What a pathetic loser.
Brownell is a great defensive coach. We had a down defensive year last year, but we are typically a top 5 team in points given up in ACC.

I wasn’t complaining about the defense. I’m calling shenanigans on Brownell as “one of the best defensive coaches in the country”. That is simply not backed up by facts. Pick any variation of team defense that you like and list his 12 seasons final rankings. I guarantee his average is not top 50.

You can pull any stat you want, but the eye test and other coaches will tell you the same thing — Brownell can coach defense. Now go back to the Lunatic Fringe Clubhouse and pout because you’re not going to get the firing you and your messed up buddies want.

Just because we've slow played into low scoring games, that doesn't mean Brownell has shown a strong defensive game. The numbers are real and completely override your eye test.

Correct.
Scoring defense thru tonight according to ncaa va tech is 101 abd we're 138th. Both teams were well below their average shooting percentage. Just one of those games. They just got their acc first team aa cotoor back and he struggled. They had actually been playing better without him.
You can't deduct anything from one game. Ultimately it doesn't matter because it comes down to wins and loses. Who cares if you got the number 1 defense if you don't win.

So…we’re only 7th in the conference?
But here we sit at 8-1. Sure, we’ve beaten the bottom teams a lot (just like everybody tries to), but our Tigers have also defeated 4 of the upper level teams.
No gimmicks.

The eye test from the games I have watched has me thinking they are pretty solid on defense.
Still cannot figure out how the this team and Kentucky for that matter lost to SC. They are horrible. Do not follow them besides final scores so do not know if major players are hurt but they are getting spanked.
