Why doesn't it make sense ? I don't think SEC and BIG would merge

This new 'super conference' would cover most major TV markets

East
BC, Clemson, Duke, FSU, GT, Louisville, Miami, UNC, NC State, Pitt, Cuse, UVA, VT, WF, WVU, UCF, Cincy

West
Cal, SMU, Stanford, Arizona, Az State, Baylor, BYU, Colorado, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas St, Okie State, TCU, Texas Tech, Utah

Yeah and push for an automatic 2 berths for playoffs. With that many teams it should be demanded

Hypothetically this happens... and the new ACC/Big12 super conference starts making high demands. What would happen if the SEC and Big10 try and break away and do their own thing and claim to be division 1a and everyone else is 1b (aka NIT tournament). ACC Big12 would claim the national champion in the current format but the SEC Big10 final game would probably have more ratings and a bigger TV deal and thus eventually become the defacto NC. Further they could threaten to include Notre Dame and a pull a couple more schools (hopefully Clemson). I am not sure what would happen but I am afraid of finding out.

Ultimately the SEC and Big10 will (behind closed doors) threaten to invite away the best brands from these conferences as a bargaining chip playing on fear of being left behind.

Which is why it won't happen 😂 But I'd be all for it.

Makes me think they'd probably go with a pod model based on region. Could be pretty fun if done right.

The Coots have been immaterial to college football for all of my life and I am 75 years old. Clemson walking away from SC for a better game would not bother me a bit. We gain NOTHING by beating SC. They gain everything by beating us. If we could exchange our annual game with SC for another Notre Dame like series I would feel great about the change. Clemson is headed for the ultimate SUPER CONFERENCE based on who we are. SC, Miss State, NCSU, Illinois and 50 more no name teams are not of much concern or interest to me or the bigger world of college football.

It sucks to be a Gamecock. Nothing about being a Gamecock has changed in half a century. I am certainly willing to walk away from SC.

Go Tigers!

Conferences are just fine as they are but for at least the 3rd summer in a row, we will hear about conference realignment every day.

Nah. I'm not impressed. The Big 12 just has two many G5 promotions. The time for a merger would have been after Texas and OU announced they were leaving and before they invited Houston, UCF and Cincy in.

For Baseball and Basketball this would be huge for premium matchups. But for football this would be very lackluster nearly every weekend.

Yep the ACC doesn't need to drop itself down further by dragging Big 12 dead weight along.

More teams wouldn't create more leverage

The small market, low revenue schools would drag this big mess down just like they do now.

If the higher revenue schools left the others behind and created a new conference, you might have something. But that won't happen.

TV revenue PER SCHOOL is what matters, not total revenue.

It doesn't change the fact the Big 10 and SEC still hold the majority of top programs and $$$. You just grouped all the second-tier programs. Now it will be easier for media to call it Div 2.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Because the Big 10 and SEC picked them clean already. Sloppy seconds.***
