Money talks in college football, always has.

John Heisman was hired by Clemson University as football and baseball coach. for $1800.

He coached at Clemson from 1900 to 1903. He still has the highest winning percentage (?) in school history in both football and baseball.
Baseball - 28–6–1
Football - 19–3–2

In his four seasons as Clemson football coach, Heisman won three SIAA titles: in 1900, 1902, and 1903. By the time of his hiring in 1900, Heisman was "the undisputed master of Southern football". Heisman later said that his approach at Clemson was "radically different from anything on earth"

The 1900 season had "the rise of Clemson from a little school whose football teams had never been heard of before, to become a football machine of the very first power." Clemson finished the season undefeated at 6–0.

After the 73–0 defeat by Clemson, Georgia Tech hired him as a coach and an athletic director for $2,250 and 30% of the home ticket sales.

I often wonder what Clemson football would've looked like if we'd somehow kept Heisman. Would we have sustained success and kept momentum through the 1920's and 30's and developed into a super blue blood on par with Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Alabama in terms of overall wins and titles?

I think the answer is, yes.

We are already a top 20 all time program, and thats without having really been on the football map until the 70s. Imagine if we had started 50 years before that like your Michigans, Notre Dames, Ohio States, and Alabamas did.

Maybe, but after Clemson he coached football at Ga Tech, Penn,

Washington & Jefferson, and Rice.

None of them turned into "super blue bloods".

what those numbers would be adjusted for inflation and what 30% of ticket sales might have looked like at GT back then? I am interested. I find it fascinating that a school would forego 30% of ticket revenue to bring a coach on. Maybe it was common practice back then, maybe we should get back to that model.....

This only goes back to 1913

But $1,800 the is $58,000 now. As far as ticket sale; football was brand new then they probably didn’t have many people attending games when he arrived. Maybe they thought he would double the crowd so 30% of the gate was a bargain.

$1.00 in 1900 would be the equivalent of about $35.00 today...

which would have equated to a salary of roughly $63,000 today.
