Kid in question was a transfer student who had repeated 9th grade at another school. Transcript did not reflect this.
Error was discovered months later after he had participated in about 25 plays total over 7 games.
First year football player in his fifth year of high school.
Closed forum for the kid's protection.

playoffs. The school found the error when they were looking over an updated transcript of the kid in question for basketball eligibility and reported it when they found the problem. No intention to cheat and lets be honest, 25 plays for someone who played HS football for the first time is not making any difference for a undefeated and nationally ranked HS team. Note I'm from Goose Creek but my kids go to Stratford (cross town rival) but I even think that's a bad deal for the coaches and other players who haven't even been beat on the field. To have an admin error end their season is just outrageous but I expected no less from the SCHSL.

The head coach

Chuck Reedy is the head coach and also the athletic director. He was in charge of turning in the eligibility. He is also the one who caughgt the mistake and turned it in. He even offered that he would accept a suspension or even to be fired if it meant that his team could continue to play. No sympathy was shown....

You do realize that the HSL is made up by and governed by the schools.
And that the schools make the rules and voted and approved EVERY rule and regulation including this one.
And the rule concerning playing 5th year students is clearly listed.
And the punishment for playing an illegal player is probation from the playoffs and that the schools voted for this rule and the punishment also.
The HSL league is not a bunch of old men hurting kids. The committee that voted to uphold the rules that Goose Creek broke is made up of high school principals, superintendents, board members, game officials, coaches, ex coaches and parents.
I am not saying the rule is fair or just. But the rule is very clearly stated. No 5th year eligibility. It is 100% the schools responsibility to check. Not knowing is not an excuse. The HSL has been consistent with this for years.
GC had no leg to stand on. They were part of the group of schools that designed the rules and by their own admission they broke the rules. Period. The punishment is clearly laid out. The HSL had no choice but to suspend them from the playoffs.
I hate it for the kids and community. GC is a fantastic team that is fun to watch.
But there is a price for breaking the rules.

should they not get any credit for reporting it themselves. They could have gotten away with it had they not turned themselves in. This teaches the student athletes that if they do something wrong, it should be covered up. The did break a rule but there should be some kind of lesser penalty for self-reporting in my opinion.

Tiger O
You make a very good point and I understand and agree with your valid argument and well stated opinion.
I am not saying I agree with the rule or how these rules are enforced with almost no latitude for extenuating circumstances.
Personally I think the eligibility and transfer rules for SC High School football need to be thrown out and started over from scratch.
But in this case the rules were clear.
Now why "mercy" was not shown for the good of the players, I am not sure. It has been in other cases over the years.

Punishments have even been inconsistent within this season. Apparently Byrnes got a slap on the wrist but Goose Creek and Lower Richland we ruled ineligiible. HSL rules need to be revised indeed.

to enforce them for many years. I have had experience with them since the 1960's, starting with a guy named Larry Graves. They seldom consider the best interests of the kids, including whole teams. They only want to punish at the drop of a hat. Chuck Allen challenged them about Xavier Dye and another kid who is now playing at Wake. He won on both occasions

This is a shame and the SC high school board should spend their time on recruiting high school kids. The player is mentally challenged and never even played

He is not mentally challenged. He is not on a graduating track but he has no mental handicap.
He played in 7 games totaling 17 plays this season.

While the student is a special ed student, he is not what you may be thinking about. He has a learning disability and needs help with many of his classes. My mom taught him in a regular math class before he transferred to Goose Creek.

“It’s not all about winning,” Reedy said. “It’s about helping young people. He had no football skills. He played in five games, less than 20 plays — 17 as a matter of fact. He came in when we had leads of 41, 49, 50, 55 and 56 points.”

The committee votes all the time to overturn rules such as this. These rules are older than most kids in college and they look a blind eye all the time in SC but make examples of others! If you go to a "magnet school" than none of these rules apply regarding recruiting and transferring!!! They turned themselves in... The kid clearly isn't a stud athlete and responsible for wins at GC! His home life is terrible and other schools didn't send his full transcript!!! So the answer is to punish the whole team??? I think every high school that's in the playoffs should ban the playoffs and not even go!!

How is the kids home life ??? Is that why he has transferred so many times or is it because he is such a stud football player that all these high schools are recruiting him to win football games??

SCHSL is very difficult to figure. I was a varsity basketball coach at a school 65 miles from Charlotte. A student transferred from a Charlotte high School because his father wanted him to be in a safer environment. He lived in a very rough part of Charlotte. The student moved in with his grandmother. We asked for a waiver, and the waiver was denied. I have known of waivers being granted for bs reasons. No logic to the SCHSL.
