Extremism IS the Democrat Party, now.
Jun 14, 2012, 3:00 PM

Somewhere between King LBJ and George McGovern, the Dems became statist, anti-religion, pro-LBG "rights", and bizarrely "feminist" with abortion on demand even for sex selection. It's turned the military services into labs for social experiments....then, there's the spending, the deficits and the debt. There's no half-measures with the likes of Teddy Kennedy (It's hard to believe Bobby Kennedy Jr's Catholic godfather was Sen. Joe McCarthy!) or Obama (Frank Marshall, Ayers, Rev. Wright, and Tribe). Are they true Marxists or just embittered Trotskyites plundering the cash boxes of the West? Only time will tell...and we ain't got much of that left, either. These Wobblies only object to 3 words in the following phrase: God Bless America.

wait, how are they extreme?

First of all, Irving Kristol and some of the other Neoconservative "godfathers" were former trotskyites- that is, liberals- who were "mugged by reality." It isn't even correct to call them trotskyites, since they repudiated that politics, let alone people like Bill Kristol who was never a trotskyite and is far more of a movement conservative than Irving Kristol or Norman Podhoretz ever were. Further, neoconservatism is hardly extremist, since it is better described as a kind of persuasion (or attitude) towards the use of the government to accomplish conservative ends.
Try knowing a little more about what you're talking about next time.

you can chalk it up to cultural movements in the late 60s

As you say, both political parties used to be culturally conservative, while the Democrats have been the more likely home for progressives and Constitutional liberals for nearly 100 years. However, counter-cultural activism in the middle of the century divided Americans in a new way, igniting the new left and the conservative movement which was a reaction to the new developments by those who wanted to protect an older establishment.
It is the combination of these leftist social movements, their fruition, and demographic changes which have made the unsustaibility of the New Deal establishment more apparent, which are at the root of today's partisanship and political extremism.
