Will Shipley Thoughts

This kid is one of my favorite players to watch based on skill, effort and attitude. He is a player.
However, he takes a lot of hits with each run. His yardage after contact is off the charts.
I'm wondering though if this is sustainable through the rest of the year or even his career. Those hits add up, yet Will wouldn't be the player he is without the 2nd and 3rd efforts he brings on almost every carry.
Shipley is fun to watch and I hope the trainers can keep him healthy and he doesn't lose a half step.
I'm sure we have had had other backs in the past similar to Will, but I don't remember one with this level of attack mode for 60 minutes.

rons1®, couldn't agree with you more. I also love Shipleys heart and talent, but sometimes finding myself squinting a little when he's taken down - anticipating injury I guess? Of course, he's proven to be reliable and holds onto the ball. So, let's hope none of this changes and he continues to find great success

Raymond Priester comes to mind…

He was in an era when that was pretty much our whole offense except for one receiver. Everyone knew he was getting the ball and yet he produced. Not fast at all. He just ran over people.

James Davis and Jamie Harper were also bruising running backs, but not quite to Shipley's level.

Agreed. Davis was more of a bruiser though Shipley is a much better athlete (he's sort of a jack of all trades mix of Spiller and Davis). Mafah though. We've never had a monster like him carrying the ball. If we had a line like UGA, he'd be a Derrick Henry style runner.

His will (no pun intended) to get every inch he can is amazing. He grinds and claws for every inch. He is truly determined to be the best he can be at all times. Love his attitude and effort.

Might be sustainable in college

His size and style won't work in the NFL though. He will be hurt all of the time.
Ship isn't terribly elusive, he takes alot of contact and tries to run through it or spin out of it.

Sadly, I do not think his running style is sustainable in

the NFL. He will get killed with injuries if he doesn't modify it and bring it back a little. The Doodes in the league are probably both 20% bigger, faster, and hit that much harder than college.

Christian McCaffrey says hello...

Don't get me wrong, the odds are not in his favor. Everyone did say the same about McCaffrey and he is still going.
I don't think Ship is quite as fast. He can't seem to pull away when he gets in the open field.

McCaffery is a good comparison, but he has been injured…

A good bit…I think it confirms the point of the original post…. First 3 years he played 16 games each season.. He played 3 in 2020 and 7 in 2021. So far he’s been out there this year…we’ll see what he does

Good post. Ship is a hard worker. He has high top end speed and acceleration. He does not have exceptional quick twitch ability/change of direction moves. As you state, one result is he takes a lot of hits. Maybe film study and practice can result in better footwork/more moves in 2023. Wish him the best. And maybe he is an NFL slot guy if agility continues to develop.

Don’t see the top end speed at all…

I Absolutely love Shipley. He plays with a ferocious determination that reminds me most of Tim Tebow.
He has elite burst but not top-end speed. Travis Etienne has elite top-end speed - a “6th gear.” I Haven’t seen that from Shipley at all. He gets from “0 to 60” very quickly but doesn’t have that extra gear to run away from people in the open field.

He’ll get away with in in college. In the NFL, not so much.

Shipley is like a human pinball machine. He bounces around off all those bumpers but it takes a toll. He doesn’t have exceptional balance as we’ve seen he often trips himself attempting to cut. That leads to extra hard hits instead of a defender grasping at air like you would see with Barry Sanders. I think work on his stance (a bit more upright) so he can see better downfield and cut with his body weight more over his feet might help. Today he basically gets his head down and plows like he’s in a farmer’s field.
