Here's a clue for you...

Feb 27, 2013, 8:26 PM

Baseball teams lose "games they shouldn't" all the time. It happens. And it's especially likely to happen early this season because Clemson is playing a lot of freshmen. Yes, they've been very good so far, especially Tyler Krieger and Steven Duggar, but I imagine they'll have rough stretches too. And it's a FACT that Clemson's player facilities are not up to the standards of other teams in the region. If you can't admit that, then it isn't my fault. Yes, Doug Kingsmore is a beautiful place and it works very well for the fans and the media, but the parts that fans DON'T see on a regular basis are not up to the standards of other ACC and especially SEC teams.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson seems to have "infinite resources"...

Feb 27, 2013, 8:59 PM

when it comes to football. In the last decade, Clemson has spent over 40 million dollars on football facilities. Want to guess how much it's spent on baseball, basketball, and soccer combined in that same time period? Not even half that. In fact, I'm fairly certain that the amount spent on just the Indoor Practice Facility exceeds the amount spent on the other three sports combined.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re Look, football is Clemson's bread and butter. You don't

Feb 27, 2013, 9:10 PM

cut off your nose to spite your face. Football only needs to beat SC and I think
that we will start doing it , again, on a consistent basis. You don't throw good money after bad money unless you have a good chance of winning. I don't see it under Leggett. I do hope that he can turn it around but I doubt it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"Clemson only needs to beat SC"?...

Feb 27, 2013, 9:18 PM

So football is a one-game season? Seems to me Clemson needs to beat Florida State and Georgia Tech and NC State and a bunch of other teams in order to win a conference championship. If your competition is spending money on facilities and you're not, then you're getting behind. And if you want to win, then you have to keep up. That applies in baseball, basketball, and soccer just like it does in football. If a player is considering playing baseball at Clemson, Virginia, UNC, South Carolina, Florida, Florida State and several others and goes to those campuses and sees what each school has, chances are he isn't going to choose Clemson. Spending money on a program shows your level of commitment to it. If that's what you call "throwing good money after bad" then I'm sorry.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good. As it should be. Win in football and everything else

Feb 27, 2013, 9:19 PM [ in reply to Clemson seems to have "infinite resources"... ]

Benefits from it. Screw basketball. We have enough facilities in baseball to win.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ah, no...

Feb 27, 2013, 9:24 PM

As the old saying goes, "a rising tide lifts all boats" and if baseball and basketball succeed, then football also benefits. Why do you think DJ Reader chose Clemson when his parents wanted him to go to Maryland? Because of baseball. Football benefits when other programs succeed. I don't understand why some people act like Clemson's sports are competing with each other. EVERY sport is important.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Football is where the money comes in

Feb 27, 2013, 10:28 PM [ in reply to Clemson seems to have "infinite resources"... ]

so they better be spending to win make our football program elite. Football is really all that matters to Clemson fans. Yeah we like baseball and basketball, but it's not even on the footballs radar

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Baseball and basketball sure seem to matter...

Feb 27, 2013, 10:35 PM

after they lose games, especially "ones they shouldn't". Other schools in the region have managed to build ALL of their sports, why shouldn't Clemson? If Florida, which most people consider a "football school" can be as good in basketball as it's been, then why can't Clemson? Shouldn't Clemson make the same effort, or even a comparable one considering the size of the institutions, as Florida has to both sports? Do you think Florida basketball has become as good as it has through dumb luck? I'm always amazed that Clemson fans expect Jack Leggett and Brad Brownell to compete on the field (or court) to the same level as their competition without making the comparable investment as the competition. Facilities matter, in EVERY sport.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree they should, but football comes first

Feb 27, 2013, 10:42 PM

and making football elite takes top spot over making baseball elite. When you get all that the football program needs like West zone and indoor practice facility, then you can start throwing some at basketball and then after basketball is met, then start on baseball. The top 2 come first. Baseball is never on major networks, but a few and post season on ESPN. Do you ever see Clemson or SC on ESPN during the regular season?

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The ESPN "family of networks"...

Feb 27, 2013, 11:02 PM

is carrying something like 160 college baseball games this regular season. Most of them are on ESPN2 or ESPNU, but they're nationally televised nonetheless. Clemson will be on ESPNU at least twice during the regular season. I believe it's this weekend that one of the ESPN networks wil begin carrying at least one college baseball game every weekend through the College World Series. The Indoor Practice Facility should have been behind the north side of Riggs Field and the baseball facility instead of first. The work on the north side of Riggs is a public safety issue and not just an athletic issue. That sidewalk is terribly unsafe for pedestrians to use on an everyday basis. You sound like Reagan with your "trickle down" theory. Didn't work then, doesn't work now.

Feb 28, 2013, 9:04 AM [ in reply to Football isn't all that matters... ]

serious. Yes, the ESPN networks are about to begin broadcasting college baseball games. A couple questions if I may:

It's February 28, what else is on that they could show?

How does college baseball ratings compare to college football on ESPN?

So Clemson will be nationally televised on ESPNU at least twice in the 50+ games that they play, but in the upcoming football season where they will potentially play 14 games, how many times will the football team be nationally televised on ESPN channels?

You're right that football isn't all that matters. From a national perspective, all that really matters in collegiate athletics is football and basketball. I love watching Clemson baseball, but come on, college baseball is just not popular across the country. But then again, your assessment of Reagan tells me all I need to know.

Now you're contradicting yourself. You said he earned the stadium with what he did at Sarge Fry. He didn't win championships there. Did they have a crystal ball? Your using hindsight to say that because he won two championships he deserves what they gave him. But they made that commitment first. But Jack doesn't deserve the same investment in your book - because he can't accomplish the same things as Ray without them. Makes no sense.

Re: Argument won***

Feb 28, 2013, 10:53 AM

Really? You just assume those schools have crap facilities and declare argument over since it is convenient? Oregon State plays in a beautiful on campus facility at the oldest college ball field in America. They have made two major renovations in the last 20 years. In 1999 they built their stadium with a individual donation of $2.3 million - more than twice what was spent to launch building our stadium. They underwent another facilities upgrade in 2009. Oregon State has spent significantly more money on their baseball program than Clemson has. None of that money spent on bleacher seats - which I doubt do much to sway recruits. (I'm not critiquing bleacher seats - just emphasizing that they have poured more money into aesthetics and facilities than we have).

Fresno State also has a premier stadium. It seats nearly 6000. Their stadium underwent a $2.2 million renovation in 1983. They led the nation in attendance in the country in 1988 and 1989. They have done further upgrades in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000. The last addition, in 2004, was a brand new clubhouse and indoor batting cages.

So no, I don't think argument won. I think his argument proves the opposite. If you actually look nearly every team to win a CWS has invested more money into sport than Clemson.

And your exaggerating greatly. Any outsider would have regarded South Carolina as comparable to but behind Clemson as a baseball program - pre-stadium. Between the facilities and an ever increasing tuition gap it will be hard for Clemson to stay competitive at anything but full scholarship sports. And you topped yourself again. I think anyone that has actually followed baseball for 60 years would know what a profoundly disingenuous statement that is. Wilhelm fought for the sport of college baseball, not just Clemson. The ACC was atrocious at a time when the best of college baseball was a sub single A clown show. Wilhelm fought hard to change that. Clemson, and the sport, are indebted to him. But Leggett has maintained that legacy of success in an ever increasingly competitive era for the sport.

coach Leggett is also fighting for the sport of college baseball in his attempts to improve the ball that the colleges use in order to get more offense into the game.

Yes...

Feb 27, 2013, 9:46 PM

but my point was, since you obviously missed it, is that coach Leggett is trying to improve college baseball much like coach Wilhelm did. Jack Leggett is a highly-respected coach in college baseball circles, a group MUCH more informed about the sport than most Clemson fans.

Re: To build on your point...

It's why the anti-Leggett group is so maddening. First, there is no chance Clemson would ever fire him short of some kind of personal issue unrelated to the sport. He has been a fantastic extension of Wilhelm's great work and is a terrific ambassador for the sport and University. Much like it did with football, Clemson has coasted on its success with baseball and it has hurt us. This incoming recruiting class was one of the best ever yet, here we are two weeks into the season, and everyone is ready to start throwing people under the bus.

and ACCURATE. You always show up after any loss and start telling everyone how poor that the coaching was. WHY don't you get a coaching job, which I am sure would pay slightly above what you are making at present if you are like most people? Everyone wants to be an armchair coach when they know nothing at all about most situations so really is sad and funny.

Feb 27, 2013, 10:29 PM

"forgotten more about baseball than you'll ever know". Not by a long shot. Has Clemson lost to a D2 school in the last few years? And no, PC, Western, Winthrop, and those schools are NOT D2. Clemson started 5 freshmen today (pitcher, catcher, shortstop, left field, right field). Most of them have done very well to this point. However, I expect that all of them will go through "down periods" at some point this season. Clemson hasn't lost significantly more games to "lesser teams" than any other D1 school has.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I guess I just expect more than you. Enjoy settling.***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What gives you the right to "expect" anything?...

Feb 27, 2013, 10:50 PM

What have you done to help build the program? Or do you just sit behind your computer and cast stones at the coaches and players? Your "expectations" aren't based in reality. If you want to see "mediocrity", then look at Bill Wilhelm's record in the 1980s. For all of his success, that wasn't a very good decade. Clemson went to Omaha in 1980 and didn't go again until 1991 (and went out there 60-8 and came back 60-10) and won the ACC that year and in 1981, but didn't win another conference title until 1989, in a much weaker league. They did win 54 games in both 87 and 88, but didn't win the conference or a regional title either year.

"lost games they shouldn't" along the way. Here's another example for you, but from basketball. Penn State was 0-14 in the Big 10 coming into today's game and just beat #4 Michigan. This happened one night after unranked Minnesota beat #1 Indiana. Being realistic isn't "making excuses". It's living in the real world. By the way, the best team Clemson has had in a long time was the 1991 team that finished 60-10 (it also went 0-2 in Omaha by the way) but that team lost to Western Carolina that just happened to be coached by Jack Leggett. Maybe that's part of why coach Wilhelm hired him at the end of that season.

Re: So?...

Feb 27, 2013, 9:26 PM [ in reply to Re: So?... ]

"Win anyway" is a stupid South Carolina slogan. How's it working for their basketball team. Evaluating problems and identifying solutions is not the same as making excuses. Clemson has a major facilities gap that hopefully this $6 million investment that is coming online soon will help close. Everyone loves to criticize the in state recruiting - but it is only going to get tougher when they have a better stadium to play at, 2 national championship banners flying, and significantly cheaper tuition for kids who are all on partial scholarships. To deny those impediments exist is just ridiculous. And to view Jack as the root of our problems is just willful ignorance of the sport. He is not being inducted into the sports' hall of fame because people felt bad for him losing to South Carolina. It is because his track record of success places him in the very highest echelon of the sport.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If nobody "lost games they shouldn't"...

Feb 27, 2013, 10:22 PM

then there would be no Hall of Fame. Bill Wilhelm lost games he shouldn't, believe it or not. Augie Garrido has lost games he shouldn't. Gene Stephenson, the winningest active coach in college baseball, has lost games he shouldn't. Why is that so hard for you to understand? Should a Clemson team that went to Omaha with a 60-8 record have lost to Western Carolina or Louisiana-Lafayette?
