Van Smith and Jadar Johnson will ball out next year...

Jan 13, 2016, 7:24 PM

I hate to say it but i think at the free safety and strong safety spots, Van Smith and Jadar Johnson will be pretty good if not exceptional fill ins for next year. From what limited snaps i saw both them play, i was highly impressed. Although they may not be the super freak athletes that TJ Green and Jayvon Kearse, their football IQ will be much better.

Now the thing that i would stress is if i'm someone in the ear of TJ Green, i would highly encourage him to come back for another year. For some reason, his situation has a look and feel of the move BRIAN MANCE made some years back when he left early. Sure, he was an outstanding athlete but he wasn't mentally ready for the next level. Personally, i think TJ GReen maybe just testing the waters if he does not get an agent.

As far as Jayvon Kearse, i think he has some excellent natural ability. Athletically and physically he is extremely, extremely impressive and may be the top at his position in that aspect. It's the mental aspect of the game that i think he will struggle in. Hopefully, he gets with the right team at the NFL level and gets coached up...

Both he and Green were brutally burned by a very basic Alabama game plan. I hate to say that's what Lane Kiffin saw in film. These guys were a liability if they had to read their keys.

As far as Kevin Dodd, Shaq Lawson, DJ Reader they are going to do pretty well at the next level. There bodies are already NFL ready.

Lastly, i did not see the MacKenzie Alexander decision to jump to the NFL coming. To me, he is the most solid CB prospect going to the NFL coming from Clemson since Donnell Woolford. I think he is going to be a huge huge addition to any NFL roster. He has both the physical and mental game down.

That's just my two cents but maybe you have another opinion....

I agree about Johnson. He has been impressive not just this year, but even last season when he got in. Smith still has to prove himself before I would say he is a step up, but think he has all the potential to be a great safety. Don't sleep on Gibson, size wise he is built like Kearse and Green, and with a spring and summer of more reps, he could be that surprise guy. Wiggins and Tank ( hopefully) will still be the heart of the secondary next year though

Also, props for the Woolford mention, he is my favorite tiger of all time

TJ Green is making a mistake. He's not close to being ready mentally. He needs to learn the position. Everyone knew Alexander was a 3 and done. Family is in economic hardship. So that is no surprise.Good thoughts.

Jadar has looked solid, Smith not so much

Smith had a good game against Miami in garbage time but he has looked lost when he has been in the game since then and has had multiple major bust, especially during the ACCCG. He will have to work and really improve going into next season. Say what you may about Kearse and Green having bad games but they have also saved our hides multiple times as well and Green especially played extremely tough the last couple of games.
