Tiger Woods

Aug 12, 2014, 10:17 AM

Serious question -

Do you think Tiger will be back next season and competitive after a fall/winter of practice or you think he's "out to pasture?"

Tiger will be competitive, but he has to be willing to make the changes in his training and practice habits to stay healthy for a long enough period of time for his game to be refined back to the point where he can win.

Yep

Like was said...he is getting old and he needs to quit trying to bench 800lbs. Needs to focus on longevity. He can't win by trying to play like he used to play so he is going to have to find another way...and I think he will.

Rory looks like the old tiger out there on the course

My take...

Aug 12, 2014, 10:32 AM

He needs to take as much time as needed to get healthy, and then he needs to get someone to help him develop a swing that's not so jarring to his back.

It would be TV gold to see him get back to form for some back-9 battles with Rory.

He can still play in 40 or more majors (probably more) moving forward. So plenty of reason to get healthy and return to form.

I agree - and also agree that he came back too early.....

Aug 12, 2014, 10:44 AM

this year when he wasn't in the physical shape he's used to or being ready to play at that level.

I'm a fan of his and don't deny it - am not expecting him to be like he was 10 years ago but do believe he's still got it in him to win at least one more major.

It will also be interesting to see next year that IF he gets off to a good start if he has the power to intimidate in any way like he used to.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think the intimidation factor left a long time ago, even

Aug 12, 2014, 10:58 AM

before his wins last year. What I do think he needs to do is change the way he approaches the game now. Perhaps take a few more irons off tees and lay up on some Par-5 holes. Take more of a strategic approach rather than an overpowering one.

Intimidation factor is gone for sure

Aug 12, 2014, 11:12 AM

I don't think even if he had continued to play good he would be as intimidating as he once was.

One, the youngest players coming up now have watched Tiger their whole lives and know what to expect when playing with him.

Two, one major factor helped his intimidation factor was the amount of onlookers he carried with him from hole to hole on the course, a lot of golfers at the time were not accustomed to this and I think they were more nervous and pressured by the huge crowds than Tiger himself. Nowadays large crowds are with most every group and with the extra amount of media coverage and people in the players faces all the time those things don't phase them as much as it once did.

And third, it seems that almost every tournament now there are several players no one has ever heard of that are playing out of their mind and hitting ridiculous shots, when Tiger was in his prime a lot of tournaments you knew who the top 15 were going to be and it was just those guys playing to win, the rest of the field were just out their but really had no chance to compete. Now you have a random player that gets locked in that one weekend and when a player is in that kind of zone nothing is going to phase them, especially Tiger.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You make an excellent point about the younger players

Aug 12, 2014, 11:17 AM

and that's an impact that Tiger's had on the game that is often overlooked and cannot be overstated. Tons of young stars are stacking leaderboards in majors from countries that have never been known for their golf. And most of them will flat out tell you that they grew up idolizing Tiger. Now, he's having to battle with them on a weekly basis. I wonder if he ever thought about that back in the day.

Another thing Tiger has changed

Aug 12, 2014, 11:41 AM

is the fact that now all these golfers are in shape athletes. When he came most players were just normal guys that had a special talent for golf but were not in top physical condition, and did not train. They were country club guys who looked like they played around then went and drank beer in the clubhouse. I think a lot of the early majors Tiger won he won by out lasting a lot of those guys physically.

Now the majority of players on tour are in shape, workout, or at least are mindful of their physical conditioning. Look at Rory, he's ripped. Fowler, Scott, and many others are obvious fairly decent athletes outside of golf. Even Phil has slimmed down.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Quite true

Aug 12, 2014, 11:52 AM

You can see this in the type of shots they can hit. I think it was the 2000 US Open at Pebble that Tiger hit a shot on a par-5 from wildly thick rough impossibly long and high to the green for a chance for eagle. I remember thinking that no human being should be able to do that. He was so much stronger and more physical than the field. Now he's just one of scores of these guys.

And go back to Butch or some other swing guru with a clue.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I absolutely think he can return and be competitive, however

Aug 12, 2014, 10:50 AM

I do not think he will ever be a serious threat to the record for major wins now.

He may slip up and win another one at some point, but he is not going to get the record.

Aug 12, 2014, 10:56 AM

I agree. I also think he has lost a major asset. He no longer has control mentally. Many golfers in the past would wilt when Woods got near them in scoring. Now, however, they seem to crank it up a notch when he gets near.

In a 65 year old body.

Knees gone, achilles hurt, wrists hurt, back shot and the most crushing of injuries--

Half the new guys out there hit it longer and straighter and putt better.

Re: Tiger Woods

Tiger will be 39 years old at next years Masters. Jack Nicklaus won his last Masters at the age of 46, however that was his last major win (18) and his 17th major was 6 years prior. Phil has won 4 majors since turning 39.

My man needs to get rid of Steve Foley I think. What bothers me about Tiger is his lack of a once unquestionable killer instinct. I noticed Sunday how Rickie and Phil would often talk to each other walking to their next shots. Tiger now does that with the person he plays with more than he ever did when he was dominate. He needs to go back to that untouchable attitude during rounds, where his playing partner wouldn't dare try to talk to him during a round. I'm hoping tiger takes this off season getting back to full health because the tiger we watch on tv now is not the same tiger I used to admire.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So much of golf is mental as well as physical. Unfortunately

Aug 13, 2014, 2:45 PM

Tiger seems to have lost most of what he had in both categories.

Can he get it back?

Time will tell, but the chances are not good IMHO.
