Catching up on injuries and NIL

First off, Happy Thanksgiving and rivalry week!! I hope everyone can spend time with family and friends this week and enjoy what promises another chaotic weekend of college football.

Let’s get right to it. I know everyone wants to know about injuries. I feel good about most of the guys being healthy – expect Briningstool and Mickens and Leigh and Woodaz all to return and be ready for the Gamecocks. My two question marks are Demonte Capehart (which, if Clemson goes with a 3-3-5 is not a big deal, and with Peter Woods moving back inside is still not a big deal because of how the other DTs are playing) and Marcus Tate. Those might be decisions of get them on the field at 10 AM Saturday and see how they feel. Just not sure on either one right now. If Tate can’t go, I would expect Tristan Leigh (LT), Harris Sewell (LG), Ryan Linthicum (C), Walker Parks (RG) and Blake Miller (RT).

Now, let's go on to recruiting and some NIL/House stuff. Clemson has lost recruits recently because of money. There is a perception that Dabo Swinney doesn’t like or use NIL, which is wrong, but he does draw the line on certain dollar amounts. There is good news on the way there, and it may come as early as Tuesday regarding how Clemson uses NIL and some new donors and how the school looks to compete and thrive in this new world. A lot of behind-the-scenes stuff has been happening for months, and I’ve been told, “We aren’t going to lose any of our current players because of money, and we are going to be aggressive in the recruiting and portal market.” To me, that means the next seven months (because the House deal with shared revenue will take effect next July 1) are critical. Schools are overspending right now, and it shows.

As for that portal, we all know the elephant in the room. One big donor told me Saturday he would love to give GENEROUSLY to NIL but refuses until the Tigers prove they are serious about using it. We've heard it before, and the proverbial proof is in the pudding, but I feel strongly that we are going to see Swinney and staff using the portal to help overcome some of the recruiting losses. I guess we will see.

Big week ahead. Big week. Big few months ahead as well.

I was reading some stuff online last night where someone was saying something big was coming regarding our NIL usage. Didn't know whether it was someone blowing smoke, or if real. Thanks to you, I can know trust it....something good is coming!!

I'm curious to hear exactly what it is.

Was that out on Tiger Illustrated? That forum has a lengthy thread about IPTAY related meetings and BOT members in recent days. It’s been understood for awhile that the NIL collective would be absorbed under IPTAY when necessary preconditions are in place. That’s the game changer news I’ve been waiting for.

I was thinking it has gotten to be that the portal is all you can do going forward. There is no other choice. You do a great job recruiting and bam GT comes in with a payday. High School recruits I feel unless they are top rated will be the ones feeling left out except from small schools needing 2’s and 3 stars to compete.

We heard this same song and dance with 110 society. We hear “Dabo is going to use the portal this offseason” every single November only to lay an egg every year.

Clemson continues its half @$$ effort at modern college football and I don’t suspect this will change that. Just more fluff. Until philosophy changes nothing will.

And I’ve been saying for 3 years now that if Clemson finds itself lacking NIL funds it’s not because of a lack of willing donors, it’s because of a lack of trust that the money will actually be used.

There was a post above that was positive which started the thread. Some might find it negative though. I must have missed the negative part. I saw some good news . Some say I don't read good though and my grammar is off. Thanks for the help. I guess we are doomed in the future. I might not even watch the South Carolina game now. Why even care? Here's Graham Neff on 11/17/2023

“110 Society is the next evolution of Clemson NIL that will be a difference-maker for our student-athletes,” said Graham Neff, Clemson University Director of Athletics. “Creating this ‘one-stop NIL shop’ that’s aligned with IPTAY, our corporate partnerships team and our community makes it clear and simple to engage in NIL with our student-athletes who are in high demand. We believe this is a critical piece to helping our programs continue to win championships in this new era of college athletics.”

Fast forward to 11/25/2024 and our recruiting class is ranked 30th!!

Excuse me if I don't buy into the charade anymore.

Until philosophy changes take place, these efforts to outsmart other schools isn't going to work.

David,

Are you indicating that the money the collectives have raised has to be spent (buying players) prior to July 1st (when the House vs NCAA settlement goes into effect)?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The House settlement already has legal challenges lined up against it

1

Nov 25, 2024, 4:19 PM

Specifically the NIL clause.

The NCAA has no legal right to interfere in private NIL in any way without an antitrust exemption. They don't have one.

A couple of legal minds I trust say that the "NIL" the House settlement is talking about is actually the school sponsored revenue sharing (school NIL) and not private NIL. Given the legal climate, that would make sense.

David,
If a booster has a legitimate business, isn’t the booster able to go under contract with a recruit to advertise for their business without the involvement of a NIL collective? In other words, if I had a bunch of money and owned a pancake house, couldn’t I just contact and fund five star offensive line recruits without anyone at Clemson knowing a thing or being involved?
