Best BBQ in South Carolina

After seeing where Pig® went to Shealy’s in Batesburg for supper the other night, it got me thinking about other best spots for BBQ in South Carolina.
Here are my top 5 (NOT in order)

Dukes in Orangeburg
Shealy’s in Batesburg
Scott’s in Hemingway
Henry’s Smokehouse in Greenville
Smokin Pig in Easley

I know that BBQ is a personal preference, so what other places do y’all have in your top 5? I’m hoping to find some new places to try!

Lewis BBQ in Charleston has beef ribs on Saturdays. The beef ribs can sell out if you eat later than 1pm. It is all good but expensive.

Home Team on 17 in Mt. Pleasant a winner every meal.

Duke's any where.

Smoking Pig if you get there early

These are just the ones that I would drive to on any given Saturday. If I widened the range the list would be way too long.

Sounds like you are Lowcountry fellow, have you tried the Winningham's BBQ sauces, Country puddin, hash, or other meats? They are in Ridgeville outskirts, they are a meat processor so they just make and sell goods, not a restaurant. Their hash is good, made with their country puddin and meats. You can buy a lot of their stuff at Piggly Wiggly. My parents love the Winningham sauces.

Duke’s in Orangeburg at the firehouse location: just finely chopped bbq, great hash and rice.

Antley’s in Orangeburg gets on the list more for Buffett along with bbq. Buttermilk fried chicken great stuff.

Smokin Pig in Pendleton area slight edge over Easley.

The place being built in Clemson by 93+76/28 that has been a food truck should be considered on list as it transitions to full restaurant soon.

Just outside SC is one in Flat Rock with bbq, brisket and sausage.

far as the BBQ. Antleys has Dukes beat on the building, and the buffet items. Dukes firehouse location probably has marginally the best hash. NONE of their meat is anything special.

The best BBQ I ever had, is no more. It was A.L. Felder's in the small town of Bowman, SC. Very livery tasting hash and highly seasoned meat, which was PERFECT for my taste buds. Bowman Academy used to do monthly fund raisers for years after Felder's closed down, with his exact recipe. Now, even they are gone.

The original SWeatmans outside of Eutawville, back when Mr. Bub and Mrs. Margie owned it, was just as good, although completely different taste wise. It was good enough for ol' Strom Thurmond, and for Holly HIll astronaut Frank Culbertson, amongst many others slightly more famous (or infamous?) than Moi.

In Orangeburg - Dukes. Hash, soft bread, sides, barbecue and mustard barbecue sauce. Hasn’t changed in 25 years except bread behind the counter instead of on picnic tables.

Circle M in Liberty for the best pulled pork - they use whole pig - unbelievable. Slaw, collards are great. Real secret is the chicken-can’t be matched.

Probably not the best but maybe most surprisingly delicious is Bucees, and I am not kidding. The bbq sandwich is good and the brisket is really good. I still like Mutts, but probably not as good as it used to be to be.

I am old school. A BBQ joint must have the following to qualify as a BBQ joint: 1. Not to fancy a place 2. Good meat and sauce 2. HASH & RICE 3. Some long ribs 4. Meat skins 5. Good slaw and good pickle 6. Fresh white bread 7. All the tea you can drink 8. Nanner puddin

All this other stuff sausage, beef and collard greens is just covering up the fact that they don't know what a 1st class BBQ joint is.

I don't think I could be that strict on what qualifies! You'd miss out on some

I grew up with Dukes in Orangeburg and that’s what I love. The others might be great, but I haven’t tried them so I won’t cast dispersions upon anyone else’s tastes. I will say there’s a place in Holly Hill that has outstanding BBQ, too, but I can’t recall the name.

I say, love and let love whatever BBQ suits the individual.

The place in Holly Hill is probably Sweatman’s. It’s located right between Holly Hill and Eutawville. Both cities claim it.

General tips from YEARS of BBQ consumption…..

1. That fancier the establishment, the worse the BBQ. As a general rule, clapboard (unpainted> painted), then cinderblock (smooth cement floor preferred), then brick is the preferred order. If the building doesn’t fit these guidelines, keep looking.

2. The cheaper the sign, the better the BBQ, generally- however, neon signage > 50 years old gets a special “front of the line” pass.

3. Pig on the signage is preferred, darn near required. Special points if the pig is pink.

Anyone have anything to add to my “BBQ rules”?

Never a fan of Texas beef BBQ or South Carolina mustard sauce. And Alabama using mayonnaise is the devil’s work.

Go Tigers and eastern Carolina vinegar and pepper sauce.

Duke's in Walterboro for pulled pork.

Lewis BBQ in Charleston for Brisket.

Jim N Nick's when I can't source any BBQ nearby 😂 though I LOVE their cheesey cornbread muffins.

Best way to get really good BBQ in South Carolina is to travel north of Gaffney to Shelby and visit Red Bridges BBQ, then bring it back across the state line.

Reading these responses just has me shaking my head.

Many of these places have good BBQ, but only one place had truly GREAT BBQ. Everyone and their Momma know that's Sweatman's BBQ in Eutawville, SC.

In addition, the hash is the best I have EVER had. Anywhere. Anytime. Not even a close second.

Every plate also comes with sweet cole slaw, although, total transparency, this particular blend only ranks 3rd on my "Best Slaw List."

And, you get pickles, a rib and a skin(s), too.

And the banana pudding actually has bananas. Hard to believe, nowadays.

Now, if you are not a Mustard BBQ person, then you would probably disagree with me. To which I respectfully ask you to have your head examined. Just sayin'.

After seeing all the responses, I am quite surprised that nobody mentioned Jon G's BBQ in Peachland, NC. They do brisket better than anyone this side of Texas.

They are open from 11-4 on Saturday ONLY. They often run out before then.

It is almost a ritualistic experience - kind of like going to the original Scott's in Hemingway.

People sit out in the parking lot starting around 9 AM - consumption of beer and bourbon is often the lead up to the doors opening.

Truly nothing like it in the south. It should be on everyone's BBQ bucket list

MCabes in Manning probably my favorite. Haven't had the chance a while but they raise their own hogs there and have excellent sides. Shulers in Latta just off I 95 is really good. But will have to say I lived in Florence for a year and I am not sure I ever had bad BBQ there. Sweatmans and Dukes in Walterboro are good as well. I grew up on the original Earl Dukes in Cameron SC it was excellent. Last time I ate at Antley's it was meh.Other than the fried chicken.
