It’s like golf in the sense that it takes practice and knowledge, technique. But I can be 70 YO fishing or golfing at the same level I was at 40. Thus not an athletic sport.

It aint athletic.
The only people that refer to golfers as athletes are golfers that never were athletes and so they think they are because they play golf.

the only sport would be, maybe...pool?
most of you are highly unathletic and out of shape 40 year olds. zero chance you're going to decline that much more in shooting a basketball, pitching / hitting a baseball, blocking/tackling...
my father in law is in a senior men's baseball league. so is baseball now not a sport?
hitting a golf ball is an athletic move, whether you'd like to admit it or not. (I'd also argue so is throwing a fishing rod in certain circumstances).
a ball is involved.
you're typically competing with another person / team.
therefore, by my definition, it's a sport.
modern golfers, especially at the collegiate and professional levels, are athletes and train as such.

To go back to baseball: You are trying to hit the ball, some other dude is throwing it all fast and spinny. Nobody cares about the people in the stands yelling. Little golfer crybabies get upset at the sound of a shutter in the backswing.
