Will and Drew Swinney on staff at Clemson...

I don't like it. Not that I don't believe those young men are under qualified or undeserving of the opportunity. Its about optics and the rhetoric it will create. I know Dabo isn't one to give a hoot what others say but this is liable to turn some heads, catch some ears, and make some noise. Which is fine who cares right? Well a lot of people do care. This is nothing but ammunition to paint the program in a negative light to the media, recruiters, recruits, other programs, other coaches, internal stakeholders....I mean this goes on and on.
Why not say look son, or look friend, let's use my influence to help you land a nice gig somewhere else and work your way into the profession under someone else's authority. Not only will my opinions of your performance be biased here but we can prevent any unnecessary outside negative attention being brought to the program.
Again I think these kids are smart smart football players and can make great coaches. I just think they should be climbing that ladder elsewhere. But I'm just a lowly Clemson IPTAY donor and tiny stakeholder.

What optics? Coach Swinney has already proved hes a nepotist with his past hires...Nothing is surprising about this at all..There is no problem here at all as long as they contribute to the program.

That's a great point of view. I can definitely support that. But I still think having two son's fresh out of college come aboard without going through any type of selection criteria or public posting, or applicant pool is not the right way to do things.

The boss generally gets to hire whoever he wants with approval of the board. Frank Beamer did it with Shane at VT, Spurrier did it with his son at Fla & SCar. Happens all the time. At this level of expertise (grad assistant) it doesn’t really matter much who gets hired but it matters a lot whom they work for & learn from. Having been coached by & played for arguably some of the best and in one of the best programs in the country for the past 15 years, the Swinney boys have a formidable resume’ already

There is a fine line between loyalty and nepotism. This is nepotism. Drew’s new wife, who is also Spier’s daughter, is also Dabo’s executive assistant. President Clement’s son is also a paid staff member. I believe he’s a “recruiting coordinator”. Not to mention all the former players and friends who are getting paid with little to no coaching experience…..

Is it nepotism when every player who graduates is offered the same opportunity? That’s loyalty. And it runs through the entire program. But it’s not as much fun to whine about.

So that applies to all the other former players who are now coaches? Tajh, Deandre McDaniel, Da’Quan Bowers, Cole Stoudt, Tyrone Crowder, etc?? This is part of the culture Dabo has established at Clemson. It shows the loyalty to the former players who showed loyalty to the team and university as players. It is a great recruiting tool for people who understand the concept of loyalty and character.

How well did that work out for Thomas Austin and Brandon Streeter? Dabo’s “loyalty” to them set the offense back years compared to what it was. It could be argued that CJ Spiller at RB coach has been underwhelming. And I still don’t know what Tajh Boyd does or any of those other former players. I believe it’s better to have people hired outside of the program to have fresh eyes and a different thought process. Luke and Riley were good hires and will hopefully improve the offense and the team. And they were outside hires. Why do we want a coaching staff filled with a bunch of former players who have NO coaching experience? Because Dabo says so and we can all pat ourselves on the back because of “culture”. They also owe their jobs to Dabo and aren’t going to rock the boat. And I know a couple of kids in the current recruiting my process. The whole hiring of former players to be on a coaching staff doesn’t mean squat to them. They’re thinking like 18 year old kids who want playing time, NIL deals, and opportunities to play elite teams and possibly play in the NFL. They’re not thinking like middle aged fans with orange colored glasses.

False dichotomy altogether. Dabo is in favor of paying players that EARN IT! Not some whiny self-entitled brat from high school or the transfer portal. If you want a piece of Clemson's NIL program that is actually a TOP-10 NIL program, then you have to come to Clemson and PROVE YOURSELF. What's wrong with that?

I like maintaining the players we have but only getting 2 commits out of hosting 17 on your huge recruiting weekend speaks volumes. Sure makes it easier for those same 4/5 Stars visiting UGA etc. the following weekend. They must laugh at us honestly. Maybe we are “cycling out” now finally.

Were there other qualified kids who applied?
Was there an interview process?
Or was this highly sought after opportunity just created and given to the head coaches son.
You don't see a potential issue there and conflict of interest?

The interview process lasted 4-5 years with these guys. Actually probably more like 7-8 years if you include their recruitment. Maybe we should hire guys based on a one hour interview instead?

I don’t see it as a problem as long as they perform. Hiring friends and family gets mixed results just like hiring people you don’t know that well. I hired a close friend into my company years ago, and he was the best worker I ever had. Then, I later hired another friend and she was a thief and a liar. You never know what you’re going to get. I don’t care if he hires Kathleen, as long as she can win football games for us.

What about kids that grew up and played D2 football in the state? Do they get a shot at interviewing for a paid or unpaid internship at Clemson? Do kids from Winthrop? Furman? Charleston Southern get a chance?

Since when has anyone ever cared about things being fair?
Why would kids that didn't dedicate years of their lives to the university get to skip the line?
If they played D2 football the could have walked on to our team (we know how much dabo likes those types) and would have been first in line to work for the football team after graduation (we also know how much dabo likes those types)

Come on man, the one just got married and needs a job. Let dad be dad, They are also making about as much as paid interns. Can’t have your brother on staff and not find a place for your kids. Recruits love seeing former players have a guaranteed job if they graduate, not bad optics at all.

They're on staff in an intern/volunteer role. It's not like he's giving them some 6 figure salary, and taking a job away from someone who's earned it. He's letting them get their feet wet, and there's nothing wrong with that (I say this as a former recruiting intern under Tommy Bowden/Dabo Swinney).

Wife: When do you think our son's boss will give them some additional responsibilities and maybe some more money to go along with that? We know how well they were raised, how dedicated, and how deserving they are. Are they being set up for a good future? They have families to take care of.
Husband: You make some good points. But their boss has to be fair to our sons and all his other employees, and the timing will have to be right.

then maybe you could have some legs to stand on with this argument. Dabo has tons of former players participate in the program. Obviously none of the Swinneys are going on to pro careers except for maybe coaching. Why hamper their opportunity here?
Do you think his boys get special treatment as a member of the team? You know that answer.
This is petty and almost as bad as donors whining about other coaches not giving their own kids preferential treatment for recruiting over national stars that they're bringing in instead.
Dabo will ALWAYS invite negative criticism. He doesn't fit the typical mold of what a college football coach should be and that really drives some folks absolutely nuts, especially now that so many voices also have their hands in the pot with NIL-led HS recruiting and the transfer game.

Look this issue doesn't just stop with Dabo and Clemson for me...it's a problem that's a little more personal. My young kid plays flag football for rec. He loves it but bless his little soul he's terrible. He gets put on a team with two coaches kids and the coaches kids bests friends. This is a league where no score is kept and no standings or trophies awarded. This level is focused solely on participation. Halfway through the season my son still hasn't touched the ball, gotten a carry, or even had a pass thrown his way. The coaches kids and friend were a 4 man team and every other kid was just left to wander around. My sons effort matched everyone else's and his sportsmanship was unmatched. I went to the head coach and asked him nicely to get my son some carries and he declined. Then I TOLD the head coach to give my son a carry. So he did, but then didn't tell my son what to do. The qb gave him the ball and he froze. That was his last carry of the season. I asked my son what happened he said coach told him to run the play. But didn't tell him what the play was. After that season he told me he didn't want to play anymore because he didn't have fun.
Long story short nepotism in any form is wrong.

I think his sons should make their own way wherever that is. It’s not a good look. It’s not like their parents are poor and can’t help them out financially until they find their way. 😏 I know coaches do it all the time but it just doesn’t look good. Dabo knows he can do pretty much anything he wants and won’t get challenged though. Btw, I really like Dabo so it’s not personal against him.

This is a double edged sword…. Dabo wants to develop his sons the way that he’s been successful which is commendable. He wants to keep them under close watch and nothing wrong with that either however there’s a danger in not allowing your children to get away from you so that they’re under another male figure besides you being their father and their boss.

Actually this situation has another name.....ENTITLED. Personally I'd be embarrassed to be an adult (over 18) male or female and still be coddled by daddy and mama. Especially with a "college education" from CU that should be worth something in the real job market. Hail, one of my friends was a platoon leader in Nam at their age. Grow up kiddos. Life is not a GD game. But I guess if you have generational wealth you can flip off everybody else. Sad.
