Where was the canteen in the 70s? I lived in Norris Hall all

5 years, and neither I nor my roommate can remember exactly where it was. Seems like we hit Johnstone and worked our way down to it, but not sure. Usually got a grilled cheese or a burger, best I recall...

there. Just a bad and hazy memory on my part. The canteen was a nice option late at night, I definitely remember the grilled cheese sandwiches with a large sweet tea.

You definitely could have walked through

1

Feb 13, 2023, 10:56 PM

Johnstone to get there. You would have walked through the breeze way between Johnstone B & C. Then, you would have crossed the plaza to the Loggia. Or you may have chosen to walk through B section if it were raining.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

OK, that makes sense. From Norris we probably hit A section

Feb 14, 2023, 7:41 AM

and then over to B. My memory wasn't so bad after all. Thanks.

At the north end of the B-5 hallway. Down low between A and B sections of Johnstone.

Wow - haven't thought about the canteen in decades. My wife and I used to eat there on occasion. There was a pinball machine in the canteen that was easy to beat (i.e., win free games). I always played it when needing a bit of encouragement. Thanks for the post!

Anyone remember Dig Dug?

That became my all time favorite video game. Loved it and the greasy sandwiches

I know the one you are talking about and I'm racking my brain trying to remember the theme of that pinball machine.

Great fried egg sandwich there. Treated myself on Friday mornings

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I had a weakness for…

4

Feb 13, 2023, 8:21 PM

the delicious ham, fried egg, and cheese sandwich, which I treated myself to several nights a week as a splurge from the usual cookie break in Harcombe cafeteria. A short walk from My C-519 dorm room.

My last year. I didn’t get the meal plan & ate the fried egg

I still love a bacon, egg and cheese on a bun!
We would go at quarter after 4:00 to get one and watch Star Trek reruns at 4:30!

My roommate and I frequented the canteen on the first floor in Lever Hall. Lived off of “super 70s”….ham, egg, cheese, lettuce and tomato.
Yes they were 70 cents in 1970-71.

Canteen under the loggia in Johnstone was sooo good. As someone said the grilled ham and cheese was great. Every Thurs nite grilled ham and cheese and pint of chocolate milk!
Lived in Lever and that one just did not have any personality like the one in Johnstone

1968-69, that was called the "Super 60" in the old Johnstone

Hit the canteen often in the early 80's. Downstairs from there and across the courtyard was Edgar's. Heard some good bands there and had plenty of Big Ed's (tall beers" during that era).

The Canteen under the Loggia was a place where Canteen Bridge held sway. There was usually a deck of cards on top of the Coke machine and a new deck could always be purchased. Time for one to go to class and that person would announce it and somebody was usually there to take over. Watched a lot of Monday night football in this establishment.

Went there a lot of times when I lived In Johnstone A building and was tired of Harcombe food.

Chili dogs and steamed grilled cheese sammiches did the same

for me. I remember many a night climbing the hill back up to the canteen from Fike, after burning off some pounds playing pickup basketball, only to pack them back on again immediately in the canteen.

:(

Anyway, fond memories of the canteen as many have said....

Being on the 7 day meal plan and the crap they served at Harcombe got so old after a while. A special treat was Chanelo's or the Study Hall, but I couldn't afford that very often. The canteen kinda filled the gap and was cheap.

The old canteen DEFINITELY had some grate "chilled grease"

1

Feb 14, 2023, 7:58 AM

(grilled cheese) sammiches. They would grill them, then put them in that old steam press and give it a couple of shots of steam to soften the bread back up. Junk food perfection!

:)

Yep, one floor below the Loggia, one floor above Edgars. Same level as Harcombe. Good food and cashed a mean $5 check, $10 if you were rich.
