Speaking of the Holocaust...

I watched a special on the Holocaust last night on PBS. It was a guy who came from survivors going around Europe showing the various places where it played out, and how it played out. There aren't many first-hand account survivors anymore, as the youngest would be in their 80's.
Anyway, it occurred to me that the Jews were annihilated largely by people who were themselves baptized Christians. Many of these Christians were Catholic, Orthodox, or Protestant....and they were standing at the end of a gun or just outside the gas chambers. There were many pastors, too, who didn't speak out, who just went along with it. The Pope during that time also didn't forcefully speak against Hitler....And yes, there were countless examples (although not nearly enough) of courageous Christians, who helped save some Jews.
One of humanity's low points. One of organized Christianity's low points, too.
During Lent, I was reflecting on my own shortcomings, of which there are many. If I was ever put in a position like what happened in Europe in the 30's and 40's, what would I do? I think I know what Jesus would want me to do. But I worry I wouldn't have the guts to do it.
And no, I'm not making any comparisons between then and now. Just thinking about what I watched last night & it got me thinking.

Isn’t that exactly what the book of revelation describes the end of times looking like?
An almighty dictator throwing those that didn’t choose to follow a particular religion into an everlasting fire?
I can’t help but wonder how people can claim to worship a god that is going to do that and at the same time be appalled by what Hitler did.

What would you have done in Europe in the 30's and 40's?...

There were people who tried to help the Jews. There were people who collaborated with the Nazis.
And then there were people that just tried to stay out of it, and not doing anything in either direction. Maybe a mixture of fear and indifference.
That last group is probably the largest. They just want to protect their own family and their own job/house/life. Maybe they didn't want to see the Jews harmed. But they were willing to not get in the way and just stay silent. This is where I think most people would reside in the end....

You probably saw Schindler's List when it came out in the 90's.
Oskar Schindler was a Catholic. He was a drunk and war profiteer, among other things. But when he saw the horror of what the Nazis were doing, he had a change in his heart, and at great risk to himself, he saved thousands of Jews from the death camps.
It's an amazing story of what one person can do in the face of evil.
When that guy was standing in front of God for judgment, I would think he'd have gotten a thumbs-up.

Hitler killed millions of people because they followed a certain religion. Your God is going to do the same thing.
Please tell me what is the difference.
I know you can say what God is, but you can’t make it make sense.

There is a roadmap which clearly shows how to avoid danger. It's called The Bible. Travel at your own discretion but I recommend you consult the map to get to the destination which you'll enjoy.
