You, partsunknown and jsebe10® could not be more wrong as far as what an honorable program like Clemson should do. Really, you are as wrong as humanly possible as far as the Clemson situation is concerned.
Tyler Davis, Ruke, XT, Mascoll, J.Phillips, S.Jones, W.Putnam, etc. could have each easily portaled their way out of Clemson; each one of these guys would be THE man at a less prominent program than Clemson.
For all of these starter quality guys to decide to be just a part of a positional rotation is due to more than our naive notion that Clemson’s Tiger paw and Running down the Hill is their reason for staying.
They are staying because they know who they are competing against, and are confident 5hat they will get meaningful PT with a top tier program. If they were to portal their way over to another program that is known for their ‘generous’ use of NIL to attract portal players, then each of the aforementioned guys may find themselves competing for PT with some super star transfer players who struck it rich in the portal. In other words, portaging out and landing at TN may have bit any of the aforementioned guys in the rear.
What does this have to do with Clemson’s loyalties to walk-ons?
Culture of loyalty at Clemson.
By seeing for themselves that Clemson won’t dump scholly walk-ons so that we can pursue portal players, our ‘always on scholly’ guys know that they won’t be undercut by us filling up our roster with portal players a la TN.
That, boys and girls, is why Clemson’s culture of loyalty creates incredible roster stability. It also makes us attractive to the smart HS players who see the long term value at Clemson exceeding the allure of short term ‘NIL from the highest bidder’ schools.

regarding the portal.
For example, Clemson recruits a kid hard and he goes somewhere else due to money or family pressure or bad advice from handlers etc. but isn’t happy. So after a year he decides to follow his heart and transfer to Clemson. That’s a kid we should not take from the portal? He was Clemson material last year but not this year?
Stop thinking an absolutes. That’s not how the world works. But evidently that’s how Dabo thinks. Contrary to what some of your people think, the man does not walk on water.

How exactly does criticizing football have ANYTHING to do with basketball?

Some of you just can’t fathom how someone could find anything bad to say about it, so when they do you convince yourselves that there is some ulterior motive.
Guess what? There isn’t.
I’m very proud of our football program and our basketball program. Both programs represent our school well and have been successful.

A booster could step up with NIL money for an in-state walk-on to cover fees for the fall semester. Then in January when the seniors leave for the NFL, put them back on scholarship in January.
Have them do personal appearances for their business. Hunter would be a big draw. They can figure something out.
A great problem, too many quality players that want to play for Clemson…… Dabo will work it out…..

Do you think the staff isn't managing our roster correctly, and the portal is why we didn't win national championships the last two seasons?
The portal is not the proven recipe for winning national championships. If we ever need a player to fill a hole, then we'll get one. But we're not going to just go in the portal to find a player and sit a starter. Again, portal kids aren't moving around to be depth.

high schoolers and developing them, he has to at some point realize that if that continues to be his method, then we will have a bunch of 18 and 19 year olds playing against grown-a$$ men in their early 20s.
Look, I do NOT like the portal and NIL landscape. At all. But all businesses have to adapt to survive.

I also prefer they didn't exist but this ongoing symbolic silent protest via boycott will not shorten the life of NIL or the TP but has and will continue to serve as another self imposed handicap effectively weakening the roster. Weakening by slowly bleeding the roster, season after season, as the TP is essentially a one way street(outbound); couple this with our other self-induced handicap: Filling the Annual Walk-On Scholarships for Charity QUOTA will make it increasingly difficult to compete against playoff caliber competition.(didn't mention NIL disadvantage)

They like to say that, but it’s more accurate to say they didn’t take any from the portal for the 22 season. There were transfers from previous years on the team, including the QB. They sent a bunch to the portal in 22 because they were over the limit.

Dabo has his way that has proven that it works for him and until he actually has to change, he will go with whatever works for him.
I understand everyone's concern about our WR group but, with the guys that has spent so much time as being injured, I sometimes wonder if some of their complaints of lingering pain could have been bc they were afraid that bc of DJ's inaccuracy, and being late getting the ball out to them would sooner or later cause them a more serious injury, and they just held onto phantom pain until there was a change at QB.
I say that bc that's most likely what I would have done with an inconsistent QB that DJ actually was, and wouldn't allow his inconsistency to cause the ending of my FB future in college or beyond. Some of our receivers came to Clemson with the talent to progress into the NFL. But like I said, that was some thoughts I was having for the reasons that some of those guys were out so much with an injury, and even when they were in the game they didn't look to be as talented as they were recruited to be, and I think that it was bc they had no trust in DJ's ability to get them the ball in time to have a chance to make a play.

is that a NIL deal just for walk-ons funded by all of these anonymous rich alumni that are supposedly dropping big bucks into their football teams. Now that they can come out of the dark, wouldn't funding a NIL dal for walk-ons help their team?

Pay for the degree, not the player. I actually like that potential twist. From what I can understand, there is no way we couldn't use NIL money to get some of these guys' tuition paid for so they can stay, play, and keep us deep.

An NIL collective, or an individual, would have to agree to that.
Most people with a bunch of money aren't going to NIL-it it a long snapper. They want to be tied to high profile players/recruits.

I mean, Dabo has built a special culture here. Fans, players, parents, alumni etc. all believe in "All-In". I don't have much money (i live in my mom's trailer) but if I did I would pay for the long-snappers, walk-ons, etc. just because every piece is important.
Better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it. We too deep.
Let's go All-In and turn NIL into our secret weapon!!
[Adding-it's like pro-sports before cap-space; you do pay for the superstars, but you also have the funds to build the supporting cast, which is vital.]

The words “the last guy we would take off” means that might not give a scholarship to Hunter which is a shame. He played as good as those on scholarship in the spring game.

"The last guy" means the guy who is at the end of the line.
If Dabo lined up all the guys in the order he would take off 'ship, Hunter would be at the back of the line. That means everyone else, including Klubnick and Shipley and Woods and Mafah and everyone else on 'ship would be in front of him.
Dabo is just saying, "Hunter Helms will be on 'ship. Ain't no way I'm taking his 'ship from him."

I believe what Dabo is saying is of all of the walk-ons that have earned a scholarship, Hunter would be the last of those that would lose his scholarship...not that Hunter would be the last player on the entire team that would lose his scholarship.

Start cutting there…. Another issue was that QB/Future Grad Assistant taking up a scholarship that we could have used for a portal WR. That’s just poor scholarship management.
Maybe we could get Dear Old Clemson or Tiger Impact to hook those kickers and long snapper up with an NIL deal to help cover their tuition.

The answer is there are none. If Helms, Thomas and Caspersen come off scholarship then we will have 84 players that were offered and signed out of high school, 1 grad transfer from the portal and 0 walk-ons on scholarship.

Pretty sure they are told, and they do realize, their grant is year to year. I'm sure they hope and pray it'll stay full and be permanent, but they know the reality. JMO

That's where some of the shortfall could pretty easily be made up. Take away scholarship money and replace it with NIL money. Not sure what the rules say about this, but I think there is a way to make that work within the rules. JMO

I agree with you, but another big factor was the COVID year which allowed some to gain another year. That had to crowd the roster to some degree. All this is going to be interesting to watch play out. I would expect there are a bunch of teams not named Clemson who are in the same boat. Many have coaches who don't have the commitment to their players that ours have. Time will tell.

I hope all the fans that think The Portal is like Walmart and you can go find players just because they are out there will read Dabo's message. The 85 limit is the law of the land and we have to be there regardless of who might be in The Portal.

Funny they never say which starter we should bench for these nameless portal players. As someone said they’re not in the portal to be backups or replacements for walk-ons.

We needed help in the secondary last season after we lost Andrew Booth, Nolan Turner, and Mario Goodrich. Just looking at 247 sports list of top cornerbacks in the transfer portal, the top seven recruits went to Alabama. Ohio State, Notre Dame, LSU, Wisconsin, Arkansas, and South Carolina all of which started in at least the nickel position for them. Georgia picked up two starters in the secondary the year before. Do you think they would have not challenged a starter for us?

So we should have predicted those injuries and had additional players on the roster before the season at that position?

Two thoughts. One may not be well received and the other is more of joke than anything...
First thought: Helms, Domonique Thomas, and our LS look to be contributors this season. I understand that their scholarships are not guaranteed each year since they were Walk-ons. However, if we're gonna take scholarships from people, should a conversation be had about the people who have scholarships but have been to injured to play? This is my unpopular opinion, but what do we owe people like Troy Stellato, a constantly injured player who (as of right now) looks to never be a contributor, that we don't owe to someone like Hunter Helms? Just my hot take...
Second thought (the joke): Why not convince a place like ItsUrWeiner to create an NIL deal with these Walk-Ons. Do a proceeds night during their 25 cents wing nights and help them pay for their tuition on their own? Or better yet, why not get Study Hall to do it since a lot of the football players frequent the place so much... Also, it'd be easier for Helms to pay that instate tuition than it would be for the Thomas to pay out-of-state tuition (just saying)...
Take these opinions with a grain of salt, don't get mad, and respond if you feel the need to...

I think it's a fair question. I think we know the answer, but it's a fair question.
Also, what about this. If we take the big 'stars' off of Scholarships, they definitely will get enough NIL money to cover tuition. That would be crazy at 99% of other programs, but at Clemson, I wouldn't be surprised if some of our high-quality young men would entertain it.

at one time, injured players who could never play again did not count against the limit. not sure what rule is now. I remember the kid from Anderson who had a major stroke before he even entered Clemson-Dabo told his family that his 4-year scholly would be honored. I doubt there are a half-dozen coaches that would do that. A player should not lose a scholarship because he got hurt playing .

Question fo D Hood
Apr 19, 2023, 10:01 AM
|
|
Do we have a position on staff that is responsible for just roster management like a GM? I hear some college teams have that person now that mimics how the do things in the NFL. They've got GM, scouts, cap guys; who are all integral to planning the composition of rosters. Have we adopted something like that yet?

It would be weird having the backup QB be a non-scholarship player lol. I would feel really bad for Helms if he does lose it since he's clearly earned it.

Looking at our QB room then Tyson was picked up as an insurance policy. We want to redshirt the freshman, and only other QB was Pearman's son -walk-on.Sounds like Dabo did what most of you want.

Ummm. Use NIL money to create funding to cover these players financial expenses. There are no guidlines on NIL. Walk-ons restaurant could surely use some T-shirt sales, billboard advertising, or radio clips? Or sign another big time player to a larger deal and have a portion of tbe deal pay tbier tuition and give that scholarship to a walk-on. Swinney is a business man, he has a plan. Just watch.in the NIL Era, these problems are not that hard.

I don't love how Clemson nation often defends Coach Swinney by not behaving anything like him or what he teaches, but I can't help but kinda respect the way it works on nearly everyone in Clemson nation.
I'll never understand it, but I'm learning to accept it will never change. This case, for example, is inherently nothing, but we're kinda treating it like the world is burning (again) & I don't get it.
I'll say this, what an absolutely remarkable run of roster management Coach Swinney has done to never be in this position before. It's just as absolutely worth celebrating. He's a inescapably tremendous leader, just wish more of the biggest voices in Clemson nation wanted to emulate & learn from him.
Can't blame Coach for trying, though. Love Coach Swinney, always.
