We stop Justin Fields on the ground, Tigers win big ...

No charge and glad to help BV sir!
It comes down to BV making JF see ghosts just as last year's Defense bewildered Tua T. And not allowing JF to scramble down field.
Possibly easier to write than defend .. but anyway, Go Tigers!

Stopping Fields’ rubbing ability is big, but it doesn’t mean much if Dobbins still runs for 150+. I look for Dobbins to have a Zeke Elliot vs Alabama type of game against Clemson’s undersized defensive front. 38-28 Ohio State.

Against the All-American DT and 2-3 DE’s who will be drafted in the first two rounds, not to mention the top 5 draft pick, Isaiah Simmons? Is that the undersized guys you’re talking about?

No argument ACC is down this year ...

As most Clemson fans will agree. That said, my question for you Buck is "are there any fast teams in the B1G 10?" Because Clemson fans have never seen one.
Interested to see Dobbins with his Texas pedigree - and if he can perform as well against defenders who lack the prerequisite B1G 10 lead weights in their cleats.
Trevor Lawrence will be chill - he dominated GOAT Bama Defense and last year's DL GOAT Quinnen Williams. Will Fields respond much better than Tua T. did last year or will he be completely bewildered?
Tigers 35 - Ohio St 17

Just so you know, you just posted a score where Clemson can’t score more than one TD a quarter. Let that marinate in your brain a while.

I fail to see how Ohio State's OLine is accepted as a key advantage for them or our DLine an issue for us.
If we take out Wofford, Clemson faced 12 teams with an average rushing ranking of 61.2 and averaging 172 yards per game. Ohio State has faced 13 teams (counting Wisconsin twice) with an average rushing ranking of 62.5 and averaging 172.7 yards per game. Basically the same. Against those schedules, Ohio State has given up 99.5 ypg to Clemson's 106.2. Hardly a difference, and yet Ohio State fans seem to think that our DLine is weak and their OLine is all world. CLEMSON is the one that's given up 13 sacks to Ohio State's 31. CLEMSON has the running back that gets way more yards per carry. CLEMSON is the OLine that outranked Ohio State's in almost all categories. Why is it such a given fact that Ohio State has any advantage...anywhere...in the trenches? I absolutely don't see it. Maybe you can help me, as someone who doesn't wear orange-tinted glasses.

Spying doesn’t really work.....it’s cliche, but I hope Clemson runs a guy as a spy on fields....unfortunately Venables ain’t that dumb.

Fields is more of a pocket passer than a runner. This game is going to be more like the 2014 game than 2016.

My two biggest concerns about the game are Fields scrambling on 3rd down and Dobbins running downhill (from a short pass or handoff).
Contain those two things and I like our chances.

This is where rotating D-lineman could be crucial because Dobbins wears down teams and becomes more effective when fatigue sets in.
Don't underestimate Fields scrambling on 3rd down. If he's fully healthy, their offense goes to another level.

I agree. It’s also just his ability to extend plays and hit a receiver on the scramble drill.
Jordan Williams, Tyler Davis, and Pickney will need to be war daddies in this one. Hopefully XT will have a big game too.

Actually, I think there is a big overlap between what you do to stop Doughboy and what you do to contain Fields. One can play right into the other.

Your first concern, and probably Venables 1st concern is the barrage of crossing routs that will hit you if Ohio State picks up your blitzes.....
You will have to blitz to stop that scrambling and having watched Day coach for two years, that’s answer #1. Ohio State has big, fast receivers from the South. If you switch to zone defenses, he will pick you apart with mid range dig routes and posts.
It’s a pick your poison thing and Ohio State is very good at finding answers to whatever you do. Teams that have had limited success have done unsound schemes that confused Ohio State temporarily, but eventually their coaching staff is great at adjusting. Just my two cents.
I’m not gonna pretend to know anything about Clemson other than three disasters.

I think you are misunderstanding our defense. it is not Coach Day that we will confuse. It is young Mr. Fields. BV is going to show him one thing and then give him another. Whatever adjustments your coaches make will not matter much because it will still be up to Mr. Fields to recognize pre-snap what BV is dialing up and react accordingly. We don't think he can handle that.

I don’t misunderstand, I expect that’s what you guys will do......you’re bound to mix it up. But, if you sit there, load the box, play man and blitz the whole time, like I’ve seen people on here say, Ohio State will torch you with crossing routes and deep corners.
It’s not like Fields has seen confusing looks before. Like I’ve said, in the three game gauntlet Ohio State just ran, they were throwing the kitchen sink at Fields. All three teams had to get out of their comfort zones and show new looks, even if they were unsound defenses.
It might be Fields first time seeing a particular look, but if it is, it will be Clemson’s first time running it too. Ohio State is good at adjusting. I have no idea how the game will flow....both teams look solid and I haven’t seen enough of Clemson to make a guess.

What confused Tua on a few plays were the corner blitzes. We were showing it then backed out of it when the ball snapped, then we would be in our normal defense but the corner would blitz when the ball was snapped. We tried it in the UVA game but they picked it up really well and it resulted in a few big plays for them. It will be interesting to see how he disguises his blitzes this time around

He had a tendency to hold on to the ball too long. I guess a sack < interception. But maybe BV could scheme up something to make him think and get some coverage sacks. I’d take it.

Yes. This is why I basically called another member an idiot for saying Fields was KB2.0.
Fields doesn't make risky throws. There is really no need for him to because he can make heartbreaking plays with his legs when guys aren't open.
When he's fully healthy and at the top of his game, Fields is actually a better college QB than Tua.
We need to forget when happened last year and also 31-0 in 2016. Neither has any relevance to Dec 28th.
We win the trenches, it's all good. Otherwise, uh oh.

The kid can throw the ball, but it is his scrambles that will kill you for the third down conversions that allow for the TD passes. if they aren't gashing us for big runs, we can defend against the pass. If both are working then we are in for a tough fight.

But Bryce Perkins doesn't suck ... and we handled his running ability fine . Think he ended up with 57 yds rushing . The point us that Fields isn't any more special at that part of the game than Trevor or Perkins or a number of other QBs . Not a single D they played has the personnel that can match up with their offensive skillset . Until now .

If healthy, Fields is completely on another level than Perkins, especially as a passer. Plus, he has Dobbins (they are a top 5 rushing team).
Agreed our defense is better than any they have faced. But their offense is on another planet compared to any our defense has faced.
They will rack up points. Get ready for it and don't be surprised. So will we. Whoever has more in the tank in the 2nd half will win. We have the edge in defensive depth.

Fields is a good runner but that really hasn't been a big part of the OSU offense. The threat of it has to be respected, which helps Dobbins, but this isn't an offense built around Fields running. Like Clemson, OSU runs a lot of outs and deep passes which opens up a lot of space underneath, which he can use to run the ball.
