Transfer portal and FSU

By now, everyone has seen the outcome of FSU going hard and heavy into the transfer portal and how their season has been. I've been saying that you can't take a large group out of the portal and expect them all to be on the same sheet of music in one season. The expectations were well beyond their reach. Now, people are saying that he should've taken the Dabo approach and only went after a few needed players. I say what a bunch of hypocrites. You all was screaming that Dabo was wrong for not bringing in players from the portal and his way of thinking is outdated. Yet, when another coach fails at it, you want to preach that Dabo was right. You can't have it both ways. I myself think Dabo's approach is best. Why go after a bunch of money chasers who don't care about the team and as soon as things seem bad, they jump right back into the portal. You build for the future, not the right now. In the end, ya'll scream when he doesn't use the portal like some think he should but then praise him for not using it when another coach fails when using the portal. Make up your minds.

Literally nobody has ever argued that Clemson should lean into the portal as heavily as FSU has. We’ve only ever argued for a handful each year, not the 17 like FSU signed last year.

They only did that because they had to replenish a depleted roster due to Jimbo leaving and the poor recruiting afterwards. They had the money to quickly rebuild so they threw everything into that

You can use the portal in many different ways. Im not sure why this is so hard for people to understand.
FSU has been using the portal to build their entire team. I have never heard a clemson fan advocate for that. What i have heard people advocate for is bringing in 3-4 players per cycle to fill key needs and to replace outgoing portal players. That is reasonable and absolutely needs to happen for us to keep up. We are the only school aside from the military academies that didnt have an incoming transfer this previous cycle.
It doesnt have to be one extreme or the other.

He is very selective in who he goes after. He wants people that fit into the culture at Clemson. He doesn't want disruptive players that will call everything to fall apart. He went after four different players that I know of for this season. All four chose other schools over Clemson. I'm sure three of them were financial. However, one chose Georgia Tech over Clemson because he was seeking an engineering degree that was available at Georgia Tech and not at Clemson. I'll let Dabo do his job and I'll keep doing mine.

Exactly what is the culture he’s trying to preserve? I mean Ohio St, Alabama, Oregon, Texas, Ole Miss and a bunch of other programs use the portal and no culture issues so far, so not sure where this malarkey comes from. It’s just an excuse is what it is!

Are some of y’all diagnosed as highly functioning down syndrome inflicted fans? 95% have questioned why not plug areas where we know we are thin. DE this year, and obviously we’re in a heck of mess next year at RB. If Clemson goes into 2025 with a 160lb RB in Haynes, it’s going to be bad. We’ve been very fortunate this year that Mafah has stayed relatively healthy

The qb to develop for depth and challenge Viz as QB2. Maybe a TE for depth but I like the guys behind Briningstool. We will just have to see who declares and who transfers and plug those spots where we don't have freshmen coming in that can play right away.

We are not deep enough at LB, RB, DL, especially DE and I would venture to say we need another quality WR. We have good starters but quality falls drastically, just look at what happens with 2nd & 3rd string Def when we pulled 1st string.

The reason that FSU took so many transfers is they lost many players last year to graduation and transfer. You can only recruit so many kids and one of reasons we have not taken Portal guys is we have not lost many to the Portal. Roster management is all about numbers.

I agree with his stance on the portal. He offered several OL but they chose to go elsewhere.
1 - Many of the top transfers already have a destination before they enter the portal. Dabo will not tamper.
2 - The other top transfers will entertain a bidding war. Dabo will not enter into a bidding war.
3 - They will also want playing time. Dabo will not guarantee playing time.
4 - They have to have high character, and be the type of player he would have recruited. Dabo will not compromise on this.
So do you want him to tamper, enter into bidding wars, guarantee playing time, or sign players with questionable character, or a combination ?
It is not hubris or stubbornness, it is part of who he is. Time will tell if will change his stance, or perhaps he will retire, but I hope not.

Ask Miami how the portal is working for them…. I think for key positions like QB, it can work….. what if FSU got Ward and Miami got DJU…. I think the outcome would be very different…. Portal is a tool not a full out solution, the teams that do well with it have a few key adds at impact player and/or for depth…. Use it as a tool, not to build an entire team…

My concern is that when you have players leave (i.e., enter the portal) each year, which admittedly hasn't been a big problem for Clemson, if you are relying on high school recruits (who need time to mature and develop) to replace them as opposed to finding more experienced players in the portal, you run the risk of having a team that is going to be perpetually young.

All in with the portal. How difficult is that for some of you to understand????
The portal is used in different ways for different teams...........some need a lot of portal guys............some need a few..........EVERYBODY needs to utilize it b/c EVERYBODY loses to the portal. Saying Dabo's approach is the best is sticking your head in the sand..........if it was BEST then we'd still be ELITE. Our program has been ridiculed b/c we went from the top 1-2 programs every year to 3-4 losses per year and struglling w/ the likes of Louisville, NCstate, & Dukes each year in a blink of an eye.
The results the last 4 years speak for themselves........underperformed in a pathetic conference w/ a large drop off from the ELITE years.

Long term success is not possible with high number portal players

You might catch lightning in a bottle. But at what damage to your recruiting base? At the end of the day, that high school base is your culture and life blood. It simply will not sustain good consistent play. Betting all your chips on a gamble is not smart. You might win (once in a blue moon), but not in the long run.

Anecdotal story about FSU and portal.
1

First, I agree with you. I hate the fact that the NCAA has set up the rules so that every player is a free agent every year. That is not sustainable. It has to be and will be changed in the coming years.
When Norvell got to FSU the problem was the talent was so poor he had no choice but to use the portal, especially since COVID hit as soon as he got there and the coaches could not go out on the road recruiting..
But, he who lives by the portal shall die by the portal. Once you start using it, it is hard to get off of it because you have so many players who you recruit who are upper classmen and only have 1 year (or maybe 2)of eligibility left. So, vetting the players, for their attitude as well as there work ethic is crucial.
Norvell hit a home run his first two years. Brought in guys with great work ethic. Brought in guys who were "all in" to the program. Brought in guys who loved the NIL money but knew the "big money" was in the NFL and they worked their butts off to get drafted, and get drafted high.
Well, here's the anecdote. This was reported on a Nole board so take it as nothing more than that. A member of that board was at the ND game. He spoke with the parents of a player and asked what was wrong with the team this year. The answer was, "Too many of these guys are satisfied wih the NIL money. They know they aren't going to NFL and they don't care. They've got their money now and they are enjoying it now. They aren't thinking about what happens when they leave."
That's the problem with NIL. Not just for portal but also for HS kids. Give an 18 year old 50K, much less 500K, and expect him to act like a 40 year old.
That's why I admire the way Clemson is running their NIL. Kids are being taught, far better than most schools, that NIL money is available if you EARN it, and they are being taught how to manage the money they have earned.

The federal court did in the Ohio vs NCAA case.
The old rule violated the Sherman Antitrust Act. If the transfer crossed state lines, it also violated the Interstate Commerce Act

Oregon also has a blank check from Phil Knight. Who's backing Clemson's paycheck? Us? LOL sit this one out Judge. Schools like that can pick and choose who they want and have the money to back it. Clemson doesn't. Some of the old heads in here need to use them. We don't have money like that. How do you guys know if Dabo isn't asking for assistance through the portal and is getting stonewalled because of how much these kids are getting. Ohio State said they spent 22 Million on their roster. Jimbo payed 30 Million and what did it do for either of those schools? Did OSU or TAMU win anything? NOPE but they made huge splashes in the portal. Congrats?? We talking about winning and sustaining winning. You cant do that with portal pick ups every year. You're hiring mercenaries. Paid for hire and if things don't go their way they are clearing it on these schools. What if we spend a million or so and the kids gets injured or doesn't think he's being paid properly. He clears it. OOPS Now yall are even more mad. lol

I don’t think you can build a whole team through portal and it’s showing for FSU. Last year they had a QB that been there for 3-4 years and then added some nice pieces on offense and defense but still had some really good players he recruited. This year he went full portal and that doesn’t work. Imo the best way to use the portal is to bring in a couple of guys that are needed like DE this year but not a whole team. Go Tigers!!!

I don't understand the NCAA allowing a transfer at will through the portal policy. NFL players can't jump ship every year unless their contract is up.
