Once they found out how easy it was to enter the portal and change teams, it's going to be hard to keep guys long enough to develop and maybe become a star player just a little later in their career the way we've had so many to do in the past!!!

I wish N. Johnson well.
Perhaps the "former Clemson Tigers player" will get him at a decent landing spot.
This hurts. Antonio Williams is likely gone after this season. We need WR depth; but ya'll I will say it until I am blue in the face.
The transfer portal is living/breating(not really) proof that scouts can't see all the talent out there. What a team has to do is find those gems.
I think given the recent departures in terms of recruits - Clemson will be forced to cast a wider net.
For now only Army, Air Force and Navy offer fewer players than Clemson. Maybe Stanford is tied with us.
But, what is a commitment now anyways from a player?
I think this trend will show people what Dabo has been saying and doing; "use the portal as needed when needed"! There hasn't been a need in his eyes; but this position group is so vital, if there is a player out there who is A. not already being offered by a big money school in the portal who is solid and needs a good home - I think Dabo offers. If the kid fits the culture. DB is another position group I think would get looks. Maybe a D2 kid who was a late bloomer looking for a new school.
I think this year Clemson signs it's first serious portal player(yes, technically we have had portal signings).

I can’t see him going to another college team; he is targeted so often by us because he gets open so much. As a crafty route runner with great hands, he reminds me of … here we go again with this comparison … Hunter Renfrow.
A.Williams is not as fast as Renfrow, though.
I think his very best option would be to seek a much bigger NIL deal with us. There are few, if any, places better than Clemson for him in which the trifecta of a fine QB who loves throwing the ball to him + a program which needs him enough to cough up really nice NIL cash, and which has a high profile.
Not knocking A.Williams here, but he did drop more passes than I thought he might this year. Not many, to be sure, but more than I’d have guessed at the start of the year. Although there is not much room for further improvement as far as ball skills, he could get a bit better with another season in The Valley. Who knows? A fourth year with us (which would represent his third full season of playing) might showcase a WR that almost never drops an easily catchable pass. The NFL would value that kind of sure handedness.

Injured all last year, good year this year but still undersized, he is not ready for NFL. If he can bulk a little he might be able to find a Ray Ray McCloud niche.

What is a "true" portal player vs a portal player? FWIW the portal is not a real place as its simply a database. We have signed two transfers IIRC who were listed in the portal as available.

True, but neither were true portal players. They were coaches who in an extreme situation could have played. Had we needed them to play, we really would be in trouble. That's what is meant as a true portal signing. Hth.

I would be surprised to see Williams go to either the portal or the draft. He will be a returning starter on a playoff team that should be projected to have another good season next year. And I don’t think his draft stock would be high enough for him to declare this year.

Unless by announcing his decision to enter the portal he automatically forfeits the game against TX, I don’t think that he’ll want to sit out our next game.
Noble Johnson is a TX guy playing college FB in his home state for the first (and maybe only) time in his college career. As already noted in this thread, Noble Johnson threw an important block in A.Randall’s game changing KO return against SMU.
I hope he stays for the entire playoff run; this is the b3dt outcome for both Clemson and for him.

It's at the point now where you can't keep depth, if a guy doesn't play they're going to transfer and you have to dip in the portal to replace the depth you lose just to fill out the roster now.

I wish him nothing but the best. Never knew until posted above that he was in the love shack all the time.
Anyway, I still remember when we signed him and you doing a breakdown of his film. He had an impressive offer list but I don't know how many were legit offers. You said he wasn't the Wesco or Moore that we needed but if he stuck with the program, could possibly be a 3rd or 4th year role player.
I miss those breakdowns.

Explain what sense it means. We lost Stelato. Might lose Antonio to NFL. We lose Earl Hampton to graduation.
Hope we pick up another WR for depth. I thought we were saving Noble for next year.

but he's not leaving for the NFL. He'll get good money here next season and still needs to improve. Leaving to be a 3rd day lottery pick makes no sense.
Only guy it might make sense to leave early is Capehart, and his injuries likely crushed his draft stock. Now, if we make a run and he has a great playoff, that could change.
Johnson plays outside. The majority of those snaps are going to Wesco and Moore the next 2 years. Noble made the right call. Plus, Williams and Brown can play outside as well. And you still have Turner and Randall out there.

He has been in the love shack since he was in the auto accident and he hasn’t been able to stay healthy. Based on other players in similar situations (Fred Davis comes to mind), it seems to be pretty hard to get out of the love shack and get meaningful playing time. So it makes sense for him to go somewhere where he can get a fresh start and maybe some playing time. I had high hopes for him when he came in but sometimes it just doesn’t work out.
