I know many of you are in love with the Portal, but players that do not play are the majority of those who look to transfer. Covil is good enough to play somewhere so I hope he finds a home.

to automatically assume that everything out there is just Choice Quality Stuff. While the reality is, the great majority are transferring due to lack of playing time at their present school. The high profile ones that are transferring for $$$ usually already have a tampered deal in place at another school before they ever HIT the Portal, so we ain't getting them, either.

Venables could with his medical redshirt. I hope he doesn't use it. That's a slot we could use for a portal guy or hs recruit... even if the hs recruit was a project. Therein lies the problem with project.
There's another way to look at this too. As Dabo preaches, we don't lose guys, we retain guys because we're a developmental program. We spent 3 years developing covil with little or no return on investment. Sure, you have misses and not every player develops, but this is becoming the norm and why we stay forever young.

That’s what I mean when I say we need the portal to build functional depth. Depth in case the next man up goes down. We were thin this year in a lot of spots.

I'm assuming this is one of the guys he was talking about. I'm further assuming that he knew when he made that statement exactly who would be leaving.
I will be shocked if he doesn't pick up 5 or more guys from the portal (I'm thinking more than 5) because he understands very well that he has to have 105 on ship next August.

If we don’t have 105 scholarship players Dabo will give a walk on a scholarship. With 105 spots there will be a lot of guys getting scholarships that otherwise didn’t deserve one.

There's a roster limit of 105. You can give scholarships to all of them or not. But a lot of that margin between 85 and 105 will be special teams players and scout team players that used to walk on when we had a roster of 125.
I haven't seen how the new roster limit affects the mid-year replacement rule. With that rule, you had to have all 85 scholarships assigned before the season in order to "replace" players set to graduate and leave in May with incoming freshmen in January. The rule allowed you to go over 85 scholarships in the spring with the overlap of seniors finishing up and freshmen starting early.

It’s not only unrealistic, it’s impossible. And that creates transfer decisions.
It is what it is. If Trevor and Deshaun were on the same roster, one would transfer. Does that mean either was a recruiting miss or a developmental failure?

He never seems commfortable when he's lining up and he never seems to anticipate the throws. Don't know what the problem was but he was not an impactful player. Safety is a sore spot for the Tigers. The prototype can cover but is also an enforcer and a run stopper. We don't have that. Tanner Muse could get burned on occasion but he lived to crush anyone carrying the ball. Insert him at safety and Sellers takes some big shots on those long runs. For those that don't remember, Muse was 225 lbs and ran 4.4. We miss him.

As pointed out so many times, we simply didn't have a spot for those 7 players that bailed .......right. But come summer we will be granting scholarships to more walk on's. We're on a fast track to mid pack within the ACC. Maybe we get the boat turned around on next years class. This one is done.
