That's 100% adrenaline and shock until the brain gets the signal that something isn't working. Fight or flight kicks in and lasts for about 3-5 seconds. October 18, 1985 I was at a fall festival and ran between two parked vehicles. A car was driving by at the same time. There weren't supposed to be an vehicles moving through that area. I hit the side marker and instead of going over the hood and into the windshield my leg rolled with the tire and the car ran over me. My initial reaction was to get up and get away from the car. I tried to stand and realized my foot was pointing the opposite direction. I'd suffered a tib/fib compound fracture. All I could do was scream for help. I still couldn't feel my leg. By the grace of God almighty a kind gentleman in the crown knelt down and told me that I was in trouble and he needed to help me. He explained that my leg was below my heart and I was bleeding profusely. He straightened my foot and with both hands lifted my foot and leg and tried to keep them aligned. Ambulance finally arrived and carried me to the hospital awaiting emergency surgery. By then i could feel everything. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. I spent October to late March/early April in various casts. Had to learn to walk and run again. Up to that day I was a 12 yr old kid that played baseball, football, basketball, anything active and competitive. Those days ended that day and that 12 yr old boy's spirit died. I managed to play baseball again years later but was just a member of the team. Psychologically I never got over it. I'm 51 now and thankful every day that I still have my leg but man I missed the football field and so much more. Prayers for Chad and his recovery. The physical is tough enough but the mental part can be devastating.
