The biggest reason for our losses last year was that the turnovers, when they

happened, were almost universally of the "gift score" variety. The opposition either scored directly off the turnover plays themselves, or were so close to our end zone that the defense had almost no opportunity to defend to keep points off the scoreboard. 2016 was brought up as a year where we had a lot of turnovers, but most of those were "middle of the field" varieties, and the defense was so good that they stonewalled the opposition and got us the ball back.
It sounds like a cliche because it is, but better ball security, along with a better defense, will get us right back where we want to be, in the Playoffs and competing for another Natty.

I’m of the ilk that because we did not have an offense humming, we didn’t score enough points to overcome mistakes like we had in the past. Yes, some of these turnovers were egregious, but the score shouldn’t have been that close to start with considering overall talent and staff strength differences between us and our opponents lost to. And some of these were because guys were trying to force something to happen.
Root causes also not only include the known unit weaknesses that we had going on last year, but also, and more importantly, because we can control this piece, playcalling that didn’t compensate for weaknesses and maximize strengths based on the situations we were in. Getting rid of the ball within 2.7 seconds is a pretty reliable data point if you want to avoid pressure, sacks, and forced errors resulting. For example, you can’t have 20 yard routes and no quick outlets on 3rd and long if you expect to be successful, or shotgun plays on 4th and 1, etc. I saw those mistakes all year.

The Offensive Line made the WR play look terrible because Cade didn't have time to conduct his read and check downs. Ball security was atrocious all season long and it usually happened during the QB/RB exchange on a hand off or fake hand off. Brilliance in the basics will fix things this season. If they can be brilliant in the basics, then Clemson will win it all because they have the roster to do it.

It wasnt the Turnovers.

Turnovers don’t cause poor conditioning;poor effort; missed assignments;missed /dropped throws;missed field goals;bad decisions.its easier to blame turnovers than ‘we just didn’t show up’ week after week.
We had 3 bad games(Duke,Miami,NC State). Whiffed on Leonard. Didn’t show up in FL. I don’t know WTH was NC. FSU was a good game, if we played like that all year, we would have had another shot at FSU and playoff. This team is good, talented, but not good enough to phone it in anymore and look for T and T to bail them out. They will have to truly light the fire to go next level. Most importantly, Every Week. If not, we will be having the same conversation next summer, with more portal angst and the glory days further behind.

I've said this before, so I'll say it again.
From the end of the season last year until kick off for the Georgia game , Cade should have been made to carry the football around with him everywhere he goes. From sunup to sundown he needs to develop a bond with the football until it's apparent he has learned to protect the ball,
He's not solely responsible of course but it begins with him

When we were winning and competing for NC and finishing in the top 4 we had NFL talent (Pro-Bowl NFL talent in some cases) at QB, DL, WR, DB, and RB. A simple comparison will show we do not match up with our teams of the past.
As the data shows, turnovers can be significant, and the timing and place on the field does matter, but it's not like we had a rush of more than our fair share last year compared to years past. Same with injuries.
Top 12? Sure, very feasible. We are very good, but not elite. Top 4? We don't have the guys that we historically have needed to get there, or, at least, we don't know who they are nor have they proven themselves.

Carrying the football around might be a good drill for RBs, but not QBs.

For running backs that kind of drill might help them hold the ball more securely if everybody on campus is allowed to take a swipe. But QBs tend to fumble the ball because they get blindside-sacked or strip-sacked when the ball is at their ear as they're looking downfield, or from bad exchanges with the RBs. We can't let everybody on campus blindside-tackle Klubnik while he holds the ball cocked for a pass.
Mafah and Shipley fumbled the ball while running in traffic. If Klubnik did that, I don't remember it.

Good article David. Yeah the turnovers weren’t just turnovers but turnovers at critical juncture in the game. Also we helped our opponents score with these turnovers as you aptly pointed out in the FSU game which if that didn’t happen we would probably have gone down and scored again to go up 27-17. I do agree that Cade will have to play a lot better for us to have a chance of winning.

That is a realistic appraisal. Kicking should be better, and we forget how much that can affect a game. I remember a game years ago, a close game with UGa. The Clemson defense stood up mightily following a turnover, and then Kevin Butler kicked a field goal a country mile away that deflated the team. Coming away with nothing after a good drive or a turnover hurts. Klubnik, like DJU, suffered under unrealistic expectations. He has the talent. Take away the critical turnovers and miscues on the kicking game, and he can be really good. And we really need a receiver to have a great year. If we have a 1000 yard receiver this year, there is every reason to expect a return to the playoffs.

Honestly, and I say this as a fan who may be wearing orange shaded glasses, but I think we get to the playoffs. I feel like we have everything we need to win every game including against UGA (I know that's probably a loss, but we absolutely can beat them). We have an elite defense, we do have playmakers, and we do have talent at every position.
If we limit the mistakes especially in critical moments, and if we can have a kicking game that can be relied on, then we absolutely can and will return to the playoffs.
And I think we do. I feel like we win the ACC and get a lot of momentum going in the process and shock a lot of people. But then again, I got orange glasses on.
