If Mayo is this good, then maybe we can see more of PWoo at tackle.

Nobody knows what it will take for a freshman to see the field in a live game than the Sophomore that earned themselves a lot of playing time the season before. Looking at the big picture with NIL taking over recruiting, we are blessed to still bring in recruits like Parker talked about in this article...

its never a good thing when Clemson outlets are touting Freshmen

as being key contributors. Only news i see is about Sammy Brown and TJ Moore being pivotal players this season. Not many freshman become pivotal players. If we're relying on Freshman to be our studs then we in trouble. Hopefully this is all just click baiting.

Lmfao so pointing out freshman making plays is equivalent to saying we’re dependent on them

when thats the only story coming out of camp... then yeah.

Aug 13, 2024, 9:18 AM

again..hoping its just to get clicks b/c the new guys are always the hot ticket item. I'd rather hear how Woods is unstoppable in practice or barnes is a becoming dominant or Cade seems to be taking that step into becoming elite. Could care less about Freshman at this stage unless they're out playing current stud WR's. Only one i can remember that got a ton of pub in camp that actually panned out in the season was Sammy Watkins. Hunter Renfrow gets honorable mention there as well. But Sammy was dominant as a freshman. Hard to come by IMO.

It’s not an either / or matter.

We have a full class (20+) true FR on the team.

Defense: Our defense looks as if 2 (Ashton Hampton and Sammy Brown) that might start right out of the gate.

Hampton because of two (or more?) experienced CBs possibly not healthy enough to get all of the reps that they need to be ready by UGA game.
Brown, because of limited experienced depth at LB (e.g., Woodaz and Carter) may also start.

So that’s a whopping two true FR in line for possiblevstarts early in the season on defense.

Offense: T.J.Moore, Bryant Wesco, and Christian Betancur May end up getting starts depending on the offensive sets at any given time. Betancur sounds like a special talent. Same as T.J.Moore and Wesco. My guess is that only one from among these three have a reasonable likelihood of starting, although it shouldn’t be a surprise if all 3 make big contributions.

Summary: Any time a program recruits well enough to have a few true FR being talented enough and smart enough (to learn the plays) start, then this is a sign of a program on the ascent.

I’ll take it all day, every day.

Article and TJ never said we were going to be depending on them? Just that they are looking good and might see playing time.

BTW - what about Peter Woods, TJ Parker, Khalil Barnes, Avieon Terrell, Tyler Brown, Blake Miller, Wade Woodaz - all recent freshman who contributed big time!?? Among others….

2025 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They did contribute alot and as you saw we fell out of the CFP picture.

Way too many freshman having to pick up quality playing time is telling. Having to constantly rely on contributing freshman just means the upper classmen are not progressing like we'd have hoped. And you're in a rebuilding type posture. And to expect a kid fresh out of high school to adapt to the rigors of the college game at an elite, leadership type level to carry us into a championship level status is silly. Nothing you can do about it i guess. WE are who we are. I was just hoping we were stepping back into that CFP level team but if we're looking to new guys to be our standard bearers then we probably aren't there yet. The good news is the younger guys playing means a couple years down the road we might be back to that level b/c of all the experience.

This article never said dependent on freshmen.. he was asked which freshmen stood out to him. Last year especially late we depended on freshmen on defense but all those guys are back. Only freshman I expect to be starting by late season is Sammy barring any injuries. Offense Moore and Wescoe will both get PT but mainly due to their play style. We’ve hit on smaller guy but not deep threat 50/50 guys lately

Why so negative? This article points out that Clemson has a bunch of talented freshmen. Nothing more. Nowhere does it say that Clemson is “depending” on freshmen in the upcoming season. I’m very happy to know that the future looks bright and as a bonus we have some freshmen who can contribute immediately. We hear a lot “coachspeak” from the coaches and I think it’s nice to hear opinions from established players.

more of an observation and its not based off of this one article

Aug 13, 2024, 11:12 AM [ in reply to Re: its never a good thing when Clemson outlets are touting Freshmen ]

its been more of a cumulative generalization based off of the majority of the news coming out for our football team. Many believe these guys will be great players this year and from my perspective freshmen never are great players initially. Maybe a handful have pulled that off. I want to temper my expectations of Moore and Sammy Brown for this year and am just hoping they get some good experience and stay healthy so that in the coming years they turn out to be studs and leaders. My focus is on Briningstool to be a leader, for those recievers that play so many snaps last year to be breakout stars, and Klubnick/Mafah taking that next step and putting together clean and efficient scores in the redzone. Klubnick is pretty efficient outside of the redzOne. If we can clean up that redzone scoring average then we can make some noise.

That's one perspective but sometimes players are so special & talented they need to play over good players that are more familiar with the system. We are deep at WR this season with 6-7 solid options so if TJ & Wesco are clearly standing out then they must be special. Everyone knows Sammy is a freak athlete & freakishly strong so it's no surprise to see he's already contributing. Our Fr DBs were pretty special to go along with Woods & Parker last season. I think we have some serious underclassmen weapons on this team. Go Tigers!!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I can't help it, every time I see Sammy Brown, I immediately think of The Boz.

Aug 13, 2024, 10:39 AM

I just hope there ain't a Bo Jackson in Sammy's future. I think he'll be alright, because there only ever was, or will be, ONE Bo Jackson. I still get the sads when I think of what that busted hip cheated us out of as sports fans. Because of it, he will never be in the NFL Hall of Fame, OR the MLB Hall of Fame, even though he had enough talent to be in BOTH.

Re: TNET: Sammy Brown, more freshmen stand out to Clemson defender stalwart

IMHO, If a Freshman is the better player, then play him. If I remember, that’s why we recruit 4 and 5 star players. I am not a coach, but I would rather have a Talented Freshman than a Sophomore from the Portal, who never saw the field. Don’t have to “unteach” bad habits.

I also seem to remember a QB, TL16, that as a TRUE FRESHMAN, led us to a Natty.

Making generalizations is very dangerous and ignorant, because every one is different in their maturity and understanding of the playbook

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

C'mon now, TL16 is not the norm, would you agree?

1

Aug 13, 2024, 1:55 PM

Even for a 5 star. We have had plenty of 5 stars that get signed and don't live up to expectations even after year 3 or 4.

BTW you're missing a pretty common sense point that most would agree with. Freshmen generally don't perform like Trevor Lawrence or Sammy Watkins.. it happens but not very often. If you are a Clemson fan and you are expecting TJ Moore to be Sammy Watkins level good then you're probably going to be disappointed. Maybe not. Maybe he does show out and has 15 Tds. But I'm not going to levy that weight on his shoulders and say he's a bust or underachieved at the end of the year when he ends up with 3 TDs and 350 yds receiving. I say expect freshman level stats and be ecstatic with overachievement.

Instead I'm looking for consistency with Tyler Brown, or Antonio, or Briningstool or Stellato to make it all W's for the Tigers. And if these young bucks wanna pitch in then i'm looking forward to it. But i'm not gonna say we Got TJ Moore who's gonna come in and be our Julio Jones in 2024. I've thought those things in the past and was wrong about pretty much everyone of them. I've learned my lesson.

Agree it's not wise to rely on freshmen to start and contribute immediately. But what you are not acknowledging is the 2019-22 classes were chock full of average caliber recruits culminating in sub-par 2021-23 seasons.

Sammy Brown needs experience but is already stronger and faster than Boulware and Skalski at their best. Just like Peter Woods, Brown needs to play. And Clemson coaches will have to fill more holes with true and redshirt freshmen in 2024 if we want our best on the field.
