For full transparency, in case you couldn't tell from my handle, I am a Black man and a proud Clemson grad. I have been biting my tongue for a lot longer than I would like to admit, but this has to be said.
Just because a team plays tough defense doesn't mean its players are "thugs." Google "thug" and tell me which of these Houston players is "violent" or "aggressive" like a criminal. These are college educated young men playing their tails off. They are coached to play tough by their coaches from day one. Does that mean their coaches are thugs too? And this isn't street ball either. This isn't the Malace in the Palace.
Are we going to call all hockey players thugs too? How about the players in the US/Canada brawl? Violence is glorified in that sport, and I'm a huge fan of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The double standard is stupifying.
I implore and challenge you to enjoy the games, be passionate about plays and players, and not make sweeping generalizations about people that can be hurtful. I love my Clemson Tigers, just ask my wife. But it is hard to come on here and escape when I read ignorant posts that attack people for no reason. I can't help but take it personally. It is uncalled for and unnecessary.
Think about the context of your words and how they can impact some of your fellow Clemson fans and grads, and stop playing ignorant when you say some of these things, especially when most of the athletes on our favorite teams look like the players on Houston.

I understand your sentiment but there are plenty of whites that are thugs also so making the assumption that just because Houston is mostly black designates thug term as a black reference could be totally generalized as well.
Im all for Houston to win but they do play very physical. Some people don't like physical basketball play or they may be mad because Houston beat the Dookies.

I was one....I hustled and scrapped for a lot of loose balls....and played aggressive defense. I loved harassing whoever was supposed to be the best player on any court. Never was a thug.

Thug is not just a word suited for black people. It can pertain to any person of any race and there is 0 evidence in these threads that anyone that uses the term “thug” meant it in that way.
And for the record… Houston does play and get away with things others wouldn’t. It’s allowed bc they have that “reputation” so officials swallow whistles more than they normally would for other teams.
Some of it is ridiculous and it gets out of hand what Houston is allowed to do sometimes. That’s where people use the term “thug”. Not just bc Houston has an all black team or at least I haven’t seen a white player for them.
All I’m saying is… the only person going “there” is you by bringing this up.

Racism exists everywhere. That’s fine if the OP wants to call on it if it’s there… I have zero problem with that.
All I’m saying is… use common sense… they’re always going to be a few. Does that make it okay? Absolutely not but they also have the right to voice their opinion just as we do whether we like it or not.
Thug can be ANY race no matter the color.

I'm certain there are several regular posters who mean that as a slur. How many people does "few" have to be for the OP to be justified in preferring that folks refrain from using the word.
You said the few who are adding a negative racial meaning to the word have a right to express their opinion here; that's not true either. The bill of rights says the government can't suppress free speech it doesn't say a private company like Tigernet is compelled to subsidize it. If someone wants to spout racism they can start their own website and say whatever they want. They have no intrinsic right to say anything that the publishers of this site deem inappropriate.

basketball has a pretty detailed ref manual on what constitutes traveling, fouls etc

Those acts are VIOLENT and would be CRIMINAL outside the rink. i'm a Piston fan and i loved the bad boys. I like the thugish, street ball brand of basketball. It is Better than the double tribble , 8 steps , palm the ball, point fest of the nBA.
These are college educated
I hope this is true at Houston. If you said it about UGA i would laugh at you.

Lack of education doesn't make one a thug. They could still be great hard working positive citizens as well as quality teammates. Moreover, who knows what they do in class. No need for the thug calls.

I guess folks have been calling Houston players "thugs" and you believe it is racially motivated?
I'm old - so I've been calling anyone guilty of particularly brutish behavior on any field of play a "thug" for years, white or black. I have noticed the word "thug" has been co-opted at some point.
As an aside: I watched the Duke/Houston game, but only a few minutes of the Florida game. I just saw very aggressive defense being played.

As much as I don't like Houston and Kelvin Sampson, I do not think any of them are "thugs" (whatever you think that is) and don't use the term.
However if the first poster jamal wants to stop biting his tongue, he will realize message board banter isn't really the problem in our society. I wonder if his tongue is bloody enough to say what is the problem.

I think his point is very simple ..... just think a little before you post.
I have written many a letter, email, or text and sat on them a minute, hour, or day before deleting them because I know better and feel like taking the high road or thinking about someone else's feeling is more important than me making my point.
