I have pretty much been a lurker here, that has enjoyed reading comments in regards to the Tiger's football. I will be honest, I'm not in the know, but I'm a huge college football fan, as well as a Tiger's fan. I'm wondering about the immediate future of where college football is going and how this may impact Clemson. What I'm hearing and reading is not great for the future, I think the SEC and Big 10 are going to control the future playoffs, I think the SEC Commissioner has fired a shot in regards to how the 12 teams are seeded, so have a few questions:
A. It seems to me that the SEC and Big 10 both regard the ACC to be on the same level as the Big 12, and quite beneath their own leagues. I think, that they are going to insure that the Boise States and Arizona State type of team cannot get a top 4 seed. I also think, that they are going to limit both the Big 12 and ACC to having one team in the playoffs. Am I seeing this correctly, or am I reading too much into this? The media deal is going to hurt the ACC in competing with both leagues.
B. Is there any chance that Clemson will be able to get into the SEC and leave the ACC? From what I understand, the Big 10 is probably not an option because they require a school to have an AAU designation, which Clemson doesn't have. I read where Florida State is working on getting the AAU designation, but have not seen where Clemson is doing the same. My concern with SEC expansion is will they only take two teams from the ACC? If so, UNC is pretty much a lock, so that leaves Clemson, FSU and Virginia battling for the last spot, a very distant chance for VA Tech.
C. Would it be beneficial for the ACC to merge with the Big 12 to form a large conference? Would this reset the tv deal with ESPN? I believe both leagues would need to get rid of some dead weight, such as, Wake, Cuse, BC, Baylor, Kansas State and Iowa State.

I think due to their location that they are dead weight! I'm certain that the SEC wouldn't take them, and the Big 10 probably wouldn't, I think they would be more inclined towards Virginia and UNC.

Implementation of Clemson Elevate will enhance Clemson's delivery on its mission of learning, research and outreach, sustain its Carnegie R1 status, and develop a profile that positions the University for an invitation to the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU).

I have read somewhere (don't have a link handy) that the SEC & B1G would like to have a minimum number of their teams get into the CFP, like minimum 3 or minimum 4 each. I don't think they'd limit the ACC to just one team. But they would like to have preferential treatment and get more into the CFP than the ACC or B12, regardless of how good the teams are.
B. Is there any chance that Clemson will be able to get into the SEC and leave the ACC? From what I understand, the Big 10 is probably not an option because they require a school to have an AAU designation, which Clemson doesn't have. I think if the B1G expands into the South, they'll look first to FSU & getting into the state of Florida. I think the SEC will likely take UNC & UVA to expand their footprint. Clemson's best chance, IMO, is to ride with FSU into the B1G. But that's just my opinion. I have no inside knowledge.
C. Would it be beneficial for the ACC to merge with the Big 12 to form a large conference? Would this reset the tv deal with ESPN? I believe both leagues would need to get rid of some dead weight, such as, Wake, Cuse, BC, Baylor, Kansas State and Iowa State.
I think combining the ACC with the Big 12 would backfire bigly. I think the ACC should try to shore up the programs we have. Now that we have Stanford, Cal, and SMU, we should try and strengthen our TV contract with what we have. I'm not too optimistic that anything can be done to save the ACC long-term, unless ESPN makes a real effort to help us out. They are making money with the ACC, and I think that they'd like to continue making money. But we need to not fall too far behind the B1G & SEC in revenue, where current projections look pretty bad for us.

FSU has been ‘rejected’ (which means, not invited to become a member institution) by the AAU in the not too distant past. Indeed, FSU had been working towards beefing up their research / various other academic bonafidies in hopes of getting that AAU invite.
Clemson has allegedly informed the B1G that Clemson has committed to the ongoing investment in research, etc in order to be in line with many other universities that are in good standing with the AAU. Clemson allegedly has an excellent bond rating (which references the credit worthiness of Clemson as a borrower). As you would know, a strong financial underpinning lends credibility to Clemson’s stated commitment to the B1G as far as being able to acquire the necessary capital to invest in research facilities. (Talk is cheap, and promises to build something seldom come to actuality if the funding is not attainable.). Clemson’s time table promise to the B1G to be worthy of AAU membership is on or before 2035.
This from various things that I’ve read starting mid-December.
I’ve read nothing from the B1G perspective. The Clemson AAU info has the vibe that Clemson and the B1G are having active discussions.
FWIW.
