Best first song to learn on guitar?

Oct 11, 2015, 2:32 PM

I just dug the old Fender out of the attic and am gonna give it another whirl. Learning chords always frustrated me, but I want to give it another shot.

Wondering what the "perfect" song to master using acoustic guitar and basic open chords.

1) Must have pop culture appeal
2) Preferably something that people know the words to
3) A song that girls like (i.e. Thunderstruck does not apply here)

I'm more of a country guy, so stuff like Sister Hazel, Oasis, Hootie, etc. might not be ideal. What song did you learn first/would you learn first? My first inclination is to just focus on Cash

This is awesome. Definitely will be a while before I can play all the chords in this one if this is accurate. Something to shoot for. Thanks.

Hootie is a good call.

Oct 11, 2015, 2:57 PM

It didn't take an ounce of talent to create and sell that crap to the public, so you know it won't take any effort for a beginner to master it.

You kind of have to learn chords, and it's not all that hard. Just do 30 minutes a day until your get the fingertips in shape, then an hour a day. It's not hard to get in an hour while watching TV at night. Don't worry so much about what you're playing just yet, as long as the songs you choose to practice on are firmly ensconced in your brain and you know where the changes are and whet the timing is. In a year, you'll look back and be amazed at your progress.

Re: Hootie is a good call.

Oct 11, 2015, 3:07 PM

Yes, gettin the fingers in shape is the process right now. I'm really enjoying so much more than I did when I tried to learn as a teen. Possibly because I'm more patient now and don't expect to get it immediately.

I'm trying to master C-A-G-E-D at the moment. And as you know, it's taking a tool on the fingers. They're not healing as fast as I want to learn. But I'm trying to be patient. And I know Hootie is kind of a joke, but you cannot deny that every chick with nice bewbs knows all the words.

Also, this is helping a lot. Not sure of other's experiences with this...but it's helping a lot to hear the chords and see what they look like on the fretboard.

One more bit of advice...

Oct 11, 2015, 3:21 PM

Find some folks to play with. If you've got pals that play, try to get a jam session going once a week. You'll be amazed how much playing with others will up your game, especially in the beginning stages.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

^^^solid advice

Oct 11, 2015, 10:19 PM

Also, I use the tabs app a ton, at home and performing. Word of advice....careful with the tab pro examples you showed....they are great, but early on they don't label the chords, so you see finger charts and don't put 2+2 together that it's a chord you are playing. I recommend an iOS app called chord bank if you want to see what chords look like. Then you can just use the basic chord charts in the tabs app. I know touring musicians that use those charts.

Lastly....best beginner song? Free falling, by Tom Petty. Everyone knows it, it's three open chords, and it is the exact same chord progression the entire freaking song.

Good luck!

Don't worry about songs.

Oct 11, 2015, 11:24 PM

Unless they have no words. Words have no value until you can make chord changes without thinking. The words will draw your focus and your mind essentially tries to master rhythm and melody at the same time. It's frustrating.

If you don't have at least an hour to spend on the guitar then don't bother. Learn two chords and how to change between them without looking at the neck. D and A or G and C are good first pairs. An hour should be enough to make your fingers sore.

Songs are like the perfect tee shot.

Oct 12, 2015, 8:08 AM

They keep you coming back and wanting to play more, despite how hard it is. In those early days, when your fingers hurt and you think it's the most complicated thing you've ever tried to do, being able to bust out a crappy cover if a song....ANY song.....is about the only thing that made me keep playing.

true story.......

Oct 12, 2015, 9:34 AM

I've got a long ways to go to be as good as I want to be at this music stuff, but to RH's point, I've gotten to play with some people in this area that I have no business playing with, and it's made me a LOT better. Probably wouldn't have stumbled across those folks in the greater Clover area.

There actually are a fair number of fine players around

Oct 12, 2015, 10:32 AM

York County, and almost everywhere, for that matter. What sets those who succeed in Nashville apart is usually the ability to sing or write, and most importantly, the heart to navigate music industry politics in order to find and keep work.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I was talking about Clover in particular.

the neighborhood you lived in was (and still is) full of Yankee carpetbaggers that probably have mullets, drive jacked up Camaros, and 'playing music' means sliding a Bon Jovi 8 track into the Craig underdash unit.

That's why I said stick to a couple of chords. There's also an issue with vocal range that confounds someone who doesn't know his vocal limitations.

How long you played, Obed?

Oct 12, 2015, 10:52 AM

I was going to get a backpacker for dual purposes....so I could travel with it, and so my daughter could learn on it since it's small. Only problem was it's darn near impossible to sit down and play with it resting on your lap....then I saw this:

Oct 12, 2015, 11:03 AM

I still kick myself for ever getting rid of the best travel guitar I ever owned, and I'd ###### up another Kramer Ferrington if I could ever find one in good shape. I gave Joonyer the acoustic bass version when he started playing years ago, and we still have it.

Lot of greate advice in this thread as I knew there would be. Thanks.

Obed, thanks for pointing out the tabs Pro distinction. I'm going through trying to learn CAGED and all their transitions until I get sick of them.

You may stay away from Cash to start with. He played a lot in E which makes you play a B as the fifth chord. Try to find songs in G or A (and use a capo on the second fret). Early Alabama songs used this a lot. Also, consider some Hank Jr. Songs from the early 80's. A lot of his are G,C,D or C,G,A.

Oct 12, 2015, 4:19 PM

I always wanted a Rainsong Guitar. They're carbon fiber, and water and temperature changes have zero effect on them. I just never could justify a few thousand for one. They really do sound and play great...had the chance to buy one of the demos at the NAMM show in Nashville many years ago, but had just gotten married and wasn't sure if I would still be when I got home with it. It would be great to have an acoustic that you could leave in the trunk all day while working when it's 105 degrees and 100% humidity in Middle Georgia. I guess I could afford one now, but I hardly ever pick up anything but the bass these days.

That said, I've been leaning pretty hard towards picking up a Fender Precision here lately.
