Sunday Sermon: We got there, but what a long, strange trip

Some random thoughts as battlefield scavengers poke in vain for anything of value left in Chief Osceola's gore-clotted pockets:
"It was a lot of fun," says our sixth-string running back
I think it was about the time Chris Wilkins rumbled in to the endzone for his TD, looking for someone to flatten. My wife looked over at me and said, "Is something wrong? You're awful quiet."
I wasn't quiet. I was in awe. We've seen Clemson pummel opponents before, but NEVER Florida State. Never like this. Never in Tally. And, in honesty, it's a beatdown I wondered if I see in my life (more on that later).
So, while we rightfully celebrate the day Clemson football utterly disembowled Florida State and sent the Seminoles deep into the swamps of football mediocrity for all time, take a moment to savor what it took to get here. Think where we were 20 years ago, nearly to the week: woefully inept victims of a 48-0 nationally televised butt-kicking in Tally.
Think where we were a few years later, full of pi$$ and vinegar, nationally ranked and ready to pay the Noles back for years of embarrassment. We had Woody. We had TZach and Rod Gardner. Heck, we had Bernard Rambert. We were Top 10! We had the Noles' number this time.
For years, Snoop Minnis galloped through my nightmares
It turns out, we had nothing.
Papa Bowden took his boy out to the woodshed, 54-7 The game, and our season, officially went to hell when our defense successfully pinned the Noles deep, literally in the shadow of their goal post. Chris Weinke (yes, Weinke!) faked a handoff, then tossed a pass from his end zone to Snoop Minnis. I can still see him loping down the sidelines for a 98-yard TD as the crowd chanted "Who's Your Daddy? Who's Your Daddy?" Wave after wave of fresh FSU players chewed us into cane pulp, and we left wondering when, if ever, we could be that talented, that deep.
It took this long to return the favor, and if I wasn't such a respecter of Dabo's "play everyone who deserves it" philosophy, I'd be mad we didn't put an extra 20 points on the Noles for that game.
Think about all the "close but no cigar" games, about all the times, you've had to sit there and suck up the constipated war cry of Osceola's enfante terribles as slipups or sloppiness kept the Tigers from this moment.
But we have arrived. It's a little bit different than a hard-fought win over 'Bama, or yet another thumping of Ohio State. Those are wins that engender respect. The Noles refuse to give respect. They're the folks who want to look down their nose at you, even if they have to tilt their chins skyward to do so.
That's fine. They may break out their clippings and old videotapes for comfort, but there's nowhere to look but the past. As the Tiger's roar echoes, their whimpering war cry settles silently in the swamps of Florida. And it feels good ... REAL good.
It's been a long, strange trip. But it's been well worth the mileage.
Welcome to the future, Tigers.
***** A personal note: A few folks have wondered where I've been recently. Short answer, I've been sick. While all true sons of Clemson were celebrating our flattening of Florida State last November, I was hooked up to a machine that sucked every drop of plasma from my body. A day later and I'd be celebrating this season with Bob Bradley and Banks McFadden and Frank Kellars ... wonderful company, but not folks I'm keen on meeting just yet.
I've got an affliction known as multiple myeloma. The easiest way to describe it, as my doc at UNC (lousy team, great hospital) says, is termites in your bloodstream. They decide on a place to hunker down and start chewing. Sometimes, its in a kidney, sometimes, it's in your liver.
This time, it's in my back. And when they start eating, they start hard. From late October through Thanksgiving I lost about 4 pounds and six inches (farewell to my dreams of playing starting guard for the Senior Olympics!) I had to go into the bubble for half a year after a bone marrow transplant and sort of fell off the map. I currently have the immunization level of a 6-month-old, but at least my hair has grown back.
On the bright side, I was too sick to worry about our loss to 'Bama. The morphine helped considerably.
If anyone has any questions, I'm wide open. Aside from that, Go Tigers!

Welcome back. Appears you had a tough battle but that Tiger Spirit seems to have healing powers. Hope and pray you will continue to be blessed from above and from all of God's children. In the meantime I'll be sitting in the AMEN corner awaiting your next jewel.

Rev. Dodd, Sorry to learn why you have been absent of late. Cancer is not a pleasant “walk in the park.” Your perspective was welcomed. Now if Dabo and company can keep it up that would be great, but you need much more. Prayers sent.

Just consider that the can of whoop-a$$ the Tigers opened on the 'Noles was a magical cure for your afflictions. And if that doesn't do it, just hang in there for about 2 months, and maybe the Natty will! Prayers for you! Go Tigers.

A nice post concerning our background with the Noles. Your health issues sound like they're on the upswing. After everything you've been through you have to be "tiger" to withstand your battles. May God bless your body and spirit in The name of Jesus Christ. Keep up the good fight Rev.

Welcome back Rev! I've missed you and your sermons.
Praying for you and your recovery.
I'm curious how the doctors figured out what you have. Hope they can get you on the mend.

Ahhh! That's a story within itself ...
Oct 28, 2018, 9:17 PM
|
|
If you know about MM (which of course I didn't at the time) it has a "smoldering stage" allowing it to build strength like a tropical storm in the middle of nowhere. It's there, winding up, but no one knows.
I had been short of breath all summer, which I attributed to getting old. TO be safe, I requested a pulmonary checkup (which came through six months later). Then I started getting nosebleeds and started talking like Ro-Revus at times. The day after Clemson whipped Kent State, I was pulling weeds in the yard and pulled my back ... or so I thought. Two trips to our local clinic revealed nothing because my blood work came back so screwy they assumed the readings were faulty.
(Quick tip: If you ever get screwy blood work, DON'T shrug it off ... make them take it again)
By the weekend of the NC State game, I was a wreck, but had no idea why. My back and hip were locked up and in our small town ER, they were literally unable to draw blood. It was just too thick.
The next evening, I was in a coma. I woke up six days and three hospitals later, which was a shame ... I understand the FSU game was great!
My wife, Lord love her, filled in the blanks. Once they were able to sludge out some blood, myeloma was an easy diagnosis. While I was unconscious, X-rays also revealed my back wasn't sprained ... it was splintered. A dozen compression fractures along the spine and hip made it an easy call as well.
So, if you have a cold that won't go away, a nosebleed that keeps coming back or leg and back ache that's taking forever to get healed, politely insist on a complete blood panel.

You’ve carried me through many low times and many High times during my years on Tigernet.
Many Sundays after a humiliating loss or eeking out a win over some lowly opponent, you cheered me up. You gave me hope. Not of the Eternal type but of the eternal type. I would check at 10. Then at 11 then....there it is! Rev’s post. Unwinding the whole game/season/life. I felt good again. We would tower over Florida State some day. Rev said so!
God Bless you Chick and all you have meant to me and Tiger Nation.

Never had the pleasure of knowing you on Tnet until now. When I saw all the “He’s back!!” posts I knew you must be special to a lot of long time Tnetters. Sounds like I’ve missed out but I’m grateful you’ve fought through to see the Tigers dominate the Noles. Fantastic sermon and God bless your future journey. I’ve walked it myself. Trusting 100% the Lord will be with you throughout. Tigernation clearly is cheering for you.

There is something about the still of the night that inspires reflection, and your words have caused me to think of all the wonderful words of encouragement from your gifted mind during my membership.
I recall my days in the 1960's as the Editor of "The Tiger," when mere words were never sufficient. Rather, thoughtful reflection was required to produce words that caused others to think. I knew long ago that you had that talent, and for that I am thankful.
I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers, while wishing the best for you and your family.

If not, get him or her a few bags of this: Chinese ginger-coconut candy. Severe nausea is a near-certainty, and this stuff was a Godsend to lots of folks in the BMU.

she had stem cell a while back and it was successful...she was first diagnosed 8 years ago. She developed suspicious issues with her spine (loss of feeling in legs) earlier this year and without actually pinpointing the reason, she began a recently released medication (I believe pills) that has excellent results...has been in remission for several months. She is Vietnam Vet(retired Army nurse) being treated at VA facilities in Seattle. I will inquire about her treatment, etc and advise. God Bless & take care buddy...there are new medications being introduced that you are probably not aware.

Welcome back @RevDodd® from your "neighbor" just up 401 from you! If you ever need anything, a closer place to stay near UNC-CH (30 maybe 45 min from my driveway to walking into hospital doors at the cancer center) for you for your family don't hesitate to ask, or even if you need a meal on your way home, we're happy to help! Good to "hear" your voice again. You don't know me from Adam but I remember reading your sermons back in 2001 when I was just a lurker on the site. My how times have changed...Good to have ya back!

Your sense of -and ability to put into sermons - the journey, history, and emotion of Tiger fans has crystalized so many key points over what - the last 10? 15? years of the Tigers climbing the mountain. You truly are the voice of the fan and I relish your sermon posts.
I hope that your chemo and transfusions/(stem cell therapy?) have demolished the miscreant plasma, the way the Tigers demolished the Seminoles.
Since you are open to questions- Stage? How early was it found? What helps you from here?
Give our regards and thanks to your wife as well. The caregiver role is a hard one.

We've been taking turns care-giving...
Oct 28, 2018, 11:23 PM
|
|
As mentioned in a post earlier, the docs made the diagnosis when I slipped into a coma in early November. It could have been spotted earlier, but my blood results were so screwy (sort of like molasses laced with protein powder) that our local clinic decided their machines must have screwed up.
It was a hyper-aggressive Stage 3 myeloma, that set up shop in my back. Docs don't know what triggers it, nor why it "smolders" for years in some and hops right up to full steam for folks like me. Currently it seems to be in remission, and with continued chemo we're hoping that's where it will stay for a while. As you may know, there's no cure. We're literally taking serpents and strychnine from now on.
Meredith and I have been flip-flopping the caregiver role. She had triple bypass surgery two years ago and got better just in time for my little adventure.
Sometimes we look at each other, shake our heads and quote Auntie Entity from "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome:"

In truth, a lot of folks have it worse...
Oct 28, 2018, 11:43 PM
|

I learned a lot about myeloma, and learned it fast. I also learned that a lot of folks have things a lot worse than me. It's a lot scarier to have it settle in your vital organ, though it hurts more in your bones ... at least I knew what it was doing and heavy-duty medication takes the edge off things.
When I was in the bubble at Chapel Hill, the guy next door was retired Army. He served in Vietnam during Tet. He said this was scarier by far. It's there, you know it's there and you know it's going to do something, someday.
You just don't know what or when.

God, it's good to have you back, Rev! I SO painfully remember the beatdown we took from FSU in the past. All the times I had nacho cheese and cokes thrown on me, all the times i heard "we smell tiger s h e e t...", and omg that horrible chant and the Tommy hawk ! This was a really refreshing game and i too am glad i was here to see it! Kidneys failing on me from time to time, so i feel your pain. Our family sends you and yours prayers as always!
Go Tigers !

Rev, it fills my heart with joy and my eyes with tears to see you back on the boards (I like to think my facebook comment from a week or so ago inspired your triumphant return but know better than to booster my own ego that way, lol). It is truly a joy to read your posts again. I knew you weren't well, but didn't realize just how bad it had gotten. Continued prayers and best wishes to you for a strong recovery. -ryan

as we knew she was going through health issues too. How can we all feel so close to someone we've never met? I don't know, but you truly feel like that guy we all depend on for hope and clarity. So glad to see you're strong enough to fight the fight! with love, Warrior Princess

...and I can certainly relate. Delighted to hear she's in remission!
I imagine my docs will discuss fusion or adding a couple of steel rods for support.

She has a rod in her leg to help with the hip and fused two discs in her lower back where the cancer ate away part of her spine. Walks with a cane now after several months using a walker.

Rev, many years fron now when you do meet up with Banks, Bob, and Frank, please find Jim Phillips to join you.
To the Rev's Tnet friends: Please register as a bone marrow donor. Donor/recepient matches are difficult to find. I've been registered for a long time and have never been called.

That's one of the rotten things about MM...

...I had to contact the national donor lists and have them remove me.
And I can't give blood anymore.
Everyone else, donate: It's one of the things everyone can give that pays inestimable dividends!

Rev. you don't know me, and you can't see me right now, but the biggest smile is on my face. The Rev. has posted. Your past post I have read aloud to my children, (I have 4) because I wanted them to here what it meant to be Clemson through and through. Thank you for cheering me up when we needed it. Thank you for keeping me rooted when we needed it. Thank you for being an example of what it means to be Clemson. I will pray for you. I hope to see more if you feel like it and you have the strength. God bless you and get well.
Jeff
